THE CITY #THECITY#

© Zagreb Tourist Board

The town of Zagreb is divided into threeparts and two of them are stunninglybeautiful. The thousand-year old Gornjigrad (Upper town) contains thePresidential Palace, the historic church ofSt. Mark’s, the Croatian parliament, museums and galleries. They are all set inromantic cobbled streets which are lit bygas lamps in the evenings. The otherextraordinary district is thenineteenth-century Donji grad (Lowertown) with its shops, restaurants, cafes, theatres, parks and spectacular buildings, which make it a stunning place. Zagreb isalso a city of green parks and walks, withmany places to visit in the beautifulsurroundings. The city will enter into thethird millennium with a population of anestimated one million. In spite of the rapiddevelopment of the economy andtransportation, it has retained its charm, and a relaxed feeling that makes it agenuinely human city.

Ilica is the longest and most popular streetof Zagreb. It starts from the square ofJelacic and from there is pretty muchcovered in shops. However, most of themsell clothes and shoes only, but it is on thisstreet that you will find all the designerbrands.

The big shopping centres have also cometo Zagreb, and the best of these is the

Importanne Galleria on Iblerov Trg.together with the Centre Kaptol which issituated on Tkalčićeva. It is important toremember that there is also a centre withthe name Importanne, which is not as highstandard as Importanne Galeria.

Dolac is the place to go to try out localspecialities from the market, one of themost famous being the cottage cheesemixed with sour cream. Other localspecialities includes the medenjaci (honeybiscuits) and the licitarska srca, thebeautifully decorated, but rock hard andinedible gingerbread which is meant tohang on the wall. There is also the PrsutGalerija where the Croatian delectable ham(Prsut) is sold by the gram or by the leg.The normal souvenir outlets are basednear the cathedral, but some gems are stillto be found here. Bakina Skrinja, onPetrinjska 20, is one of them; they have adiverse selection of locally made ceramicsand other interesting things.
