Who are we? Criticaleye is the peer to peer Board Community, with more than 13 years of experience transforming executives and global leadership teams.

Our unique strength lies in our ability to bring together a wide range of leadership and industry experience into a trusted environment, where executives and their teams are empowered to be the best they can be.

We enable CEOs and their senior teams to build the alignment necessary to execute strategy successfully.

Executives will broaden their skillset and knowledge by engaging with leaders from outside of their own personal and professional networks. We combine both individual and team development in order to challenge, critique and provide new frames of reference from other industries which serve to inspire fresh ideas, innovation and strategic alignment.

What do we do? We transform global leaders and executive teams by enabling them to outperform. We help them achieve alignment, break down silos and build trust at the senior level.

As the peer to peer Board Community, our work reinforces the role of the CEO as a leader and the importance of accountability within an executive team.

We successfully enhance high-performing leadership teams by utilising our global reach: a strong Community of peer relationships.

Our structured, bespoke approach helps executives and their teams overcome challenges and obtain structured outcomes. We deliver this by creating an experiential learning environment that leverages the knowledge and expertise of our international leadership Community, fostering team collaboration and sharpening the capabilities of individuals.

So whether you’re learning from our rich editorial archives of leading insights, exploring a range of subjects in-person, or connecting with a leading expert, we have a learning platform to suit everyone.

Familiarity in the boardroom doesn’t always breed contempt, but it can

encourage complacency and assumpti ons that alienate directors from a business and its wider market. A good chairman, in conjuncti on with the CEO, will be fully aware of this and won’t be afraid to shake things up.

Ian Durant, Chairman at London property company Capital & Counti es Properti es (Capco) and bakery chain Greggs, has been through fi ve board reviews at three diff erent organisati ons.

“If the chairman wants to get something done then the board review can act as a tool to make it happen, or if board members want the chairman to behave diff erently it can assist the delivery of that message,” he explains.

Adding to this assessment, Judith Nicol, Director of Leadership Services at executi ve search fi rm Warren Partners, says: “Board reviews provide that ti me to think. Being made to stop and refl ect opens up possibiliti es for the business.”

According to Judith, reviews generally have the most impact when “you have a new chair, new directors or a new set of challenges that the board is facing”.

Glen Moreno, Chairman of internati onal publishing and educati on company Pearson and FTSE 250 bank Virgin Money, explains how he carried out his fi rst review at Pearson aft er he had been there a year: “I led the eff ecti veness review with the support of the board… We decided that to add value we should focus on four key areas that would make >

When Experience Counts

While soluti ons may not be easy to come by, it can be diffi cult for

a leader to openly admit they don’t have the answers. That’s where a mentor can make a big diff erence.

A mentor can be parti cularly useful when starti ng a new role, says Matt hew Wright, CEO of uti lity company Southern Water: “The value of a mentor is that you can draw on their experience in ti mes of change. You might be entering a dysfuncti onal team, or the board might not be as supporti ve as you thought it would be.

“There are myriad issues that you can’t anti cipate unti l you’re in the role.

By speaking to someone who has been there, you can prepare yourself for what’s to come.”

Tom Taylor, Chair of the Consumer Council for Water in Wales and former Chief Executi ve of the Agriculture and Horti culture Development Board, says: “My mentor got me to realise that as a new CEO, it was not my job to solve every problem as I had fi rst thought.

“She got me to understand there’s a huge diff erence between leadership and management, which I think is one of the most common issues facing a fi rst-ti me CEO. You can manage a team but you need to lead an organisati on.”

Tony Cowling, Criti caleye Board Mentor and former CEO and Chairman of market research company TNS, agrees that mentoring helps new CEOs develop essenti al skills for the role. “Chief executi ves are oft en anxious when they’re new because there’s nearly always a part of the business they know litt le, or less, about,” he says.

He explains that one of his mentees soon realised they required a wider skillset for the role: “They’d come up through fi nance… suddenly they were CEO and had responsibility for the company’s marketi ng, sales and online presence. They thought: ‘The company needs to change in >
