Getting Started

O v e r v i e w

The purpose of this workshop is to define effective use of technology, evaluate lesson plans, and write a lesson plan that effectively integrates technology. The workshop focuses on helping participants:

Effectively use technology to improve instructional practices andstudent learning.

Identify effective strategies for integrating technology.

Develop a plan for integrating technology resources into the classroom.

E v i d e n c e o f L e a r n i n g

Participants will:

List the criteria for effective use of technology.

Provide suggestions for enhancing a lesson plan using that criteria.

Write or modify a content-rich lesson plan that incorporates effective uses of technology.

Introductions

P a r t i c i p a n t I n t r o d u c t i o n s

Think about the following question. Describe your most successful useof technology or your best experience using technology.

What is the best experience you have had using technology in yourclassroom?

T a k i n g t h e P u l s e

With a partner, think about two pieces of evidence of effective technology integration.

1.

2.

3.

4.

After sharing your ideas, go to the Web site and read the researchsummaries. Then add to your list of evidence of effective technologyintegration. A

Evaluate Lesson Plans

In this activity, you will improve an existing lesson plan to effectivelyincorporate technology. Review the lesson plans on the workshop Website and identify one lesson or activity in the subject or grade levelthat you teach. Review the lesson or activity using the followingquestions. Think about one way to improve the quality and effectivenessof the lesson.

Then, complete the following page to share your ideas with the group.

Evaluating a Lesson Plan

Lesson or Activity:

Questions

1. What kind of technology was used?

2. Does the use of technology help students to be more productiveor make the product more efficient?

3. Does the use of technology enrich and extend student learning?

4. Does the use of technology help support instructional goals?

Sharing Lesson Plans

1. What educational objectives were you addressing with the(activity), in terms of:

Specific skills or knowledge (e.g., know the formula forgravity’s effect on an object)

Specific concepts (e.g., understanding how gravity affectsobjects of different weights on different planets)

Specific cognitive abilities (e.g., developing problem-solvingand analytic skills by examining gravity simulations)

2. How did the activities help students to develop the skills, knowledge, or cognitive abilities to meet the educationalobjectives?

3. How did the students demonstrate that they had met the educational objectives (e.g., quizzes, tests, task, presentation, paper, etc.)?

4. What evaluation criteria did you use to measure the degreeto which students had met the educational objectives(e.g., a rubric or a series of 25-point quizzes with certainweights)?

5. Did you group students or have them work individually (or both)? If you used student groups, how did you hold the groupaccountable for meeting the educational objectives? If youused student groups, did you also have a system for holdingindividual students within each group accountable for meetingthe educational objectives?

6. How successful were students in meeting the educationalobjectives? Was there much variation in student achievementwithin the class?

Lesson Plan Directions

Use this outline as a guide for how you should fill in each sectionof your lesson plan.

O v e r v i e w

Write a few sentences describing the purpose of the lesson, how itworks, the target grade level, the duration, prerequisites, what youintend students to learn, and what evidence can be used to deter-mine what they actually learn. Be as informative as necessary and as simple as possible.

M a t e r i a l s

Describe necessary materials and resources, including computer technology.

P l a n n i n g a n d D i a g n o s t i c s

1. Identify any relevant academic standards that you are assess-ing at the end of the lesson, translated into a small number ofmeasurable objectives.

2. Identify necessary prerequisite skills and knowledge for thislesson, and explain how to determine which students have theprerequisite skills and knowledge.

M a i n L e s s o n A c t i v i t i e s

Hook/Engagement Explain how to introduce the lesson, including how to “hook” students(i.e., get them engaged and talking about the topic).

VocabularyIdentify key words and phrases and how to introduce them in anengaging, interactive way.

Measurable Objectives “Here’s what I’d like you tolearn…”Describe how to explain the purpose of the lesson to students in language that they will understand. State the objectives.

Focused Instruction “Let me show you something.”Explain how to present the new knowledge or skill to students in anengaging way. This may include modeling a skill, giving a brief slidepresentation or lecture, and so forth. Describe how to ask questionsdesigned to check for understanding.

Practice in Authentic, Challenging Contexts

Guided Practice “Let’s do it together.”Describe how to work through a sample problem together with studentsso that they understand what is expected of them and also how toapply the new skill or knowledge in a novel context. Describe how toprovide coaching along the way, so that students have the help theyneed to be successful.

Independent Practice “Now you try.”Describe how to provide students with an opportunity to apply thenew knowledge or skill in the context of another, more challengingproblem. Describe useful grouping strategies.

Assessment “Let’s talk about what you’ve done.”Describe how students will demonstrate their mastery of the newskill(s) and/or knowledge, how this learning will be measured, andhow the teacher can give useful feedback. Describe how to use a discussion of products and/or performances as a way of summarizingwhat has been learned.

R e f l e c t i o n a n d P l a n n i n g

Explain how to use specific information from the assessment, such aswritten work, feedback, and discussion with students, to decide whatto teach next. For example, it may be necessary to teach similar skillsin a different context to ensure mastery. Or another lesson may followlogically once students have mastered the material in this one.
