CELEBRATING ELD CANADA’S SUCCESS

In 2017 ELD Canada launched a new one-week experiential leadership dialogue based on the theme of Sustainable Community Development. The first Emerging Leaders for Sustainable Community Development program, involving indigenous and non-indigenous young leaders, was held in partnership with McGill’s Institute for Studies in International Development and Vancouver Island University. Planned as an annual partner certificate ELD Canada leadership dialogue, a Caribbean- Canada emerging leaders dialogue will be launched next.

ELD Canada’s President’s Council Patrons and Members provide the core funding for the leadership dialogues through their charitable donations. Committed to the importance of a global network of leaders, Patrons and Members meet annually at the President’s Council Forum followed by a gala recognition event with HRH The Prince Royal, Princess Anne. The 2017 Forum and a Dinner were held at Marlborough House and St James’s Palace.

EMERGING LEADERS’ DIALOGUES INITIATIVESTHE EMERGING LEADERS FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

In June 2017, Emerging Leaders’ Dialogues Canada, McGill University’s Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID), and Vancouver Island University (VIU) organized the first, Emerging Leaders for Sustainable Community Development

(ELSCD) program, which promotes relationship building and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through leadership collaboration and development. The program themes were Ethics and Good Governance; Inclusiveness, Diversity and Community Engagement; Collaborative Leadership and, Sustainability.

Over 6 days, this program brought together 38 Canadian and American emerging leaders for three days of module work and three days of experiential visits to business enterprises, unions, government departments and civil society organizations, in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. These on-site visits provided an opportunity to discuss real challenges and strategies with community leaders. Interacting with such a diverse mix of organizations exposed the participants to a range of issues from multiple perspectives, and provided an opportunity to look beyond the scope of their regular context. The insights gained from the modules and meetings promoted understanding and connection and informed the project work of the groups.

MEMBERS AND PATRONS OF THE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL ARE ACKNOWLEDGED AT THE ANNUAL FORUM AND RECOGNITION EVENT

In April 2017, we hosted 60 guests from Canada, the U.K. and Malaysia, at the inaugural The Duke of Edinburgh’s Emerging Leaders’ Dialogues Canada, President’s Council

Forum, held at Marlborough House.

The theme Creating Globally Connected Leaders; Sustainability, Sector Innovation and Opportunities, was aptly presented by eminent speakers the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary General of the Commonwealth Secretariat; Mr. John Bailey, Head of Sustainability, University of London; and, Mr. Philip Jennings, General Secretary, UNI Global Union and a 1980 CSC alum.

Attendees had the opportunity to hear from these world class leaders about the unique challenges they face within their own sectors, and the innovative initiatives they are utilizing to create strategies for sustainable success. The Forum discussions brought to light issues of relevance to the broader community and will influence future ELD Canada programs.

During the evening, guests were welcomed to enjoy conversation and dinner with HRH The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, and other eminent guests. During the annual recognition event, Members and Patrons are honoured for their support of ELD Canada when Princess Anne, presents them with their President’s Council pin, designed by the Crown Jewellers.

In 2017, the reception and dinner was held at St. James’s Palace, and guests had the opportunity to dine with Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

ELD CANADA TAKES PRIDE IN CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF OUR ALUMNI

ELD Canada’s Alumni Network is globally connected and are active as speakers, mentors and patrons to ELD Canada programs. Our alumni proactively connect with emerging leaders and harness their growing

capacity through value added initiatives. We utilize social media platforms to offer modernized channels of Alumni connectivity and peer engagement, which then feeds directly into our programming.

We would like to highlight and congratulate the achievements of the following leaders and take pleasure in knowing that our programs have had an impact on their leadership development:

Sharlene Linette Cartwright-Robinson JP, a CCELD 2011 alum became Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands in December 2016. She is the territory’s first female premier and leader of the People’s Democratic Movement.

Ben Almond, Regional Managing Director & SVP, Canada, CH2M, a CCELD 2011 alum received recognition for his outstanding contribution to his organization by being recognized as one of Canada’s Top 40 Leaders under 40.

Tasha Brooks, an alum of ELSCD 2017, accepted a position as the Education Navigator at Vancouver Island University - Cowichan campus, to support students as they journey through post-secondary education.

ELSCD 2017 TESTIMONIALS

Participating in the ELSCD program was an experience that shifted my worldview

and understanding in ways that have improved my personal and professional work

and relations. This course challenged normative approaches to indigenous and

non-indigenous ways of reconciliation, leadership, and community development;

and offered a space where open dialogue could happen in order to shed light on

the complexities of the challenges we face as a society and people. One of the

greatest ‘take aways’ from this program were the friendships and connections

made through the groups shared experiences. My network has grown, and

I believe is stronger for it!

My understanding of reconciliation shifted dramatically over the course

of the week. I’ve spent the last decade of my life working on reconciliation

programming and projects in high conflict areas around the world. I’m familiar with

dozens of definitions and understanding of the concept from a variety of cultural

perspectives. But the week with ELSCD located my understanding of reconciliation

in something more tactile. Reconciliation is so abstract so much of the time, what I

realized this week was that we build relationships by building something together.

That something can be anything - a water treatment plant, a flood protection

system, a sense of community and belonging - or whatever other shared needs

exist. We focus so much of our time on trying to rebuild relationship without

anything to build them around. If we can build something together that addresses

a shared need and shared opportunity, the relationship is a more natural and

sustainable and creates opportunities to continue to come together, understand

differences, and build respect.
