Creating a Grade One Unit

• There are different things I looked at when creating a unit.

• Before deciding the topic I need to think about the goals for my students and the

competencies we need to work on.

• Based on the goals and competencies the students need to work on choose a theme or topic that students how interest in. Perhaps even choose the theme or topic together.

• Apply the topic to different subject areas when building lessons. These lessons should capture

the interests and learning abilities of each student.

• Plan assessments with student involvement

where each student’s goals will be improved on.

Creating a Grade One Unit:Theme or Topic

My Piggy and Elephant Unit

- At the time of our unit it was reading month in our school. I thought it would a fun idea to

pick an author or series of books and go with that theme for one or two weeks. A series of books would also be a great choice because most of my objectives were Language Arts

objectives.

- I asked the students to think of their favorite books and authors.

- As a class we came to the decision that we wanted Piggy and Elephant to be our theme.

- The students worked it out among themselves and were all very excited about the idea (they

love Piggy and Elephant!)

- PIGGY AND ELEPHANT IT IS!!!

Creating a Grade One Unit: Assessment

My Piggy and Elephant Unit

Through out this unit on-going assessment had been going on. I saw how student were working

whether alone or in groups or as a class. I was able to see were

students were at academically through out this unit. Some students were able to write

sentences and others needed help from myself or peers. Other

students could solve and make their own problems while other

needed extra help or extra support from objects. I was able to acknowledge this through out

different lessons.
