Developers Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon recently secured detailed planning approval to construct the infrastructure for the first phase of residential development, which will include a neighbourhood centre, new primary school, retail, and community and health facilities, all for public use.

Plans for the first phase of homes are currently be finalised. Construction of the first homes is expected to start in 2014, subject to planning approval.

DORSTEN

40 years ago this year, Crawley signed a twinning agreement with Dorsten in germany. It has been a very successful 40 years, and is still going strong in both towns. New links have been created and existing ones strengthened through cultural, social and educational exchange visits. To mark this momentous occasion, 35 people from Dorsten will

be visiting Crawley from 20 to 28 July. A programme of events is planned for our guests during this week, including a small reception hosted by the Deputy Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Vanessa Cumper.

On Saturday 27 July, a day of celebrations takes place in Queens Square. There will be lots of entertainment for all the family including Heather Illidge, winner of last year’s Crawley’s Got Talent; an acoustic band from Dorsten, Irish dancers, an Appalachian Clogging side, martial arts demonstrations and choirs. As well as a packed entertainment programme, we’ve also got

vintage British and German cars on display plus a stall selling hot, British and Bavarian sausages! Crawley Town Twinning Association is a voluntary organisation and

is always looking for new members to ensure that the links between the two towns continue to grow and thrive for future generations. If you would like more information, contact Nicky Shaw on 01293 438393.Visit www.crawley.gov.uk/twinning for up-to-date information.

Have your sayThe latest stage of the Crawley 2029 LocalPlanishere–andwewantyourviews on proposed developments and areas to be protected. The Local Plan is prepared by Crawley Borough Council and sets out how development of land should be managed to ensure that planning decisions meet the needs of people living and working in the town, now and in the future.

Without an up-to-date Local Plan in place, Crawley will lose some control over decisions for guiding and managing new developments within the borough.

Hundreds of people responded to the first two stages of consultation and gave feedback about what Crawley might need in the future, which has helped inform this latest stage.

Residents had a strong priority for meeting as much of Crawley’s own housing and employment needs within the town, while recognising the importance of its open spaces and character of the built and natural environment.

The council has undertaken studies looking at the amount of open space in the town and how this should be used, how many homes we’re likely to need and what infrastructure will be needed to support growth. This work has shown that over the next 15 years there will be demand for housing, a gypsy and travellers’ site and a new cemetery.

The council wants your views on these additional sites, as well as rejected sites to see if you agree and any sites that may have been overlooked.

The Local Plan is also seeking to protect some of our historic parks and gardens and open space for future generations to use and enjoy.

Taking part in this consultation will help us decide what sites should be included in the Local Plan before it is submitted for inspection in early 2014. Any final decision about what sites will be included in the final document will be subject to public examination and views can still be expressed at this stage.

For more information and to have your say, visit www.crawley.gov.uk/crawley2029 or pick up a questionnaire at the Town Hall. The closing date for responses is 1 July.

Police and Crime PlanSussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, has launched

her first ever Police and Crime Plan. This plan sets out the Commissioner’s

key strategic objectives for Sussex. The plan lays out how, in partnership,

the Commissioner will tackle these priorities within her term of office.

Within these priority areas are a number of targets that

Sussex Police and criminal justice partners across the county

will be expected to achieve. These are:

• Crime and community safety – Reduce the risk

of crime per 1,000 population

• Victim focus – Improve victim satisfaction in the overall

experience of the criminal justice system

• Public confidence – Increase the reporting of domestic

violence and abuse, serious sexual offences, anti-social

behaviour and hate crimes

• Value for money – Working with Sussex Police

and partners to meet the financial challenges ahead

while delivering crime and community safety, victim

focus and public confidence and identifying

opportunities to improve.

Katy Bourne said: “This plan has been developed

in consultation with Community Safety Partnerships,

the voluntary sector, police, probation, local authorities

and of course the public.

“The plan is a living document and will remain under

constant review. It has been scrutinised by the Police

and Crime Panel, who have the important role for holding

me to account for the plan and my performance against it.

The panel will continue to carry out this vital work throughout

my term of office, acting as a critical friend.”

The full Police and Crime Plan can be found online at

Former Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Keith Blake, hung up his chain last week. Here the 40th Mayor of Crawley takes a look back at the past year.

It’s been a fantastic year. Being the Mayor of Crawley is a huge honour in any year but to hold the office during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Olympic and Paralympic Games was extra special.

These events were a highlight for the whole country and as Mayor as I was fortunate to be involved in many of the local events.

I attended street parties, concerts, The Big Lunch and a beacon lighting in Tilgate Park for the Diamond Jubilee. I hosted Olympians, Paralympians and dignitaries from visiting countries as the Olympic Torch Relay passed through Crawley in July and attended a Paralympics Flame event in Queens Square.

Away from the British summer of celebration and sport I had a full diary meeting charities and community groups, hosting the Civic Reception, opening events and buildings, chairing Full Council

meetings, starting the Santas on the Run event in the Memorial Gardens and enjoying great days out across Sussex and occasionally further afield.

My chosen charity in 2012/13 was Crawley District Scouts. I’m delighted to have been able to help them raise at least £8,000 through various events and fundraising activities.

The most recent was the Crawley Mayorathon, which I hosted at Tilgate Park. It was a fantastic, sunny bank holiday weekend and the park was packed.

I’ve met countless people over the past 12 months, all tirelessly doing their very best for Crawley and its residents. It’s been a busy but brilliant year and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped to make it a great year.

The free Easy Way map can be downloaded from www.crawley.gov.uk/cycling and is available to pick up from K2 Crawley, Crawley Library, Crawley Town Football Club, community centres and cafes, shops and bars which display a Cycle Crawley poster.

Crawley has many miles of cycle routes which are suitable for people of all ages and many of which are off-road. The Easy Way map is part of Cycle Crawley, a town-wide campaign to show residents and commuters that bikes are fast and convenient.

The campaign is led by the council with support from Central Sussex College, Crawley Cycle Forum, national cycling organisations Sustrans and CTC, sports and health organisations. For more information about cycling visit www.crawley.gov.uk/cycling

A new ‘no-mess’ cycle map has been created by Crawley Borough Council.

If there is an emergency, the Government’s advice is to ‘go in, stay in and tune in’. These are the frequencies of local radio stations:

Around 500 voluntary and community groups exist in Crawley, ranging from small, neighbourhood based groups to branches of national charities.

Very often, the springboard for voluntary action occurs when the needs of family, friends or community cannot be met by existing services or support. Small community groups pool their energy, time and resources to fill the gaps. But who do these organisations turn to when they need support and advice?

Take the enthusiastic local group who felt a real need to inspire healthy living through sport and recreational activities, particularly for children and young people with special needs.

Like many new voluntary groups, enthusiasm outstripped their knowledge and experience of running a successful organisation. Soon they were asking themselves questions they couldn’t immediately answer: Do we need to register as a charity? Does charging for our services conflict with our values? How can the organisation grow to meet increasing need when so few resources are available?

Some of the problems ran deeper; in order to make ends meet, the group was stretching itself thinly and providing services without a clear plan. The committee was small and felt unsure of its responsibilities and how it could best meet its objectives.

The situation created stress and concern for the group, which had previously been happy to provide services which were making a difference. The group felt it might have to fold despite being seen as a valuable service by its clients and by other organisations.

IN AN EMERGENCY

Fortunately, help was at hand in the form of Crawley’s Capacity Building Development Group, a network of support for voluntary and community organisations consisting of Crawley Borough Council (CBC), Crawley Community and Voluntary Service (CCVS), Crawley Ethnic Minority Partnership, West Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Services (WSCVYS) and West Sussex County Council.

WSCVYS was aware of the group’s progress and the problems it was facing. As a first step, WSCVYS encouraged the group to review its mission and vision to ensure that the work of the group was consistent with its values and purpose.

CBC stepped in to help the group to decide where to focus its efforts in the short, medium and long-term.

And finally CCVS provided information and advice on the roles and responsibilities of the committee and helped the group to develop a suitable constitution. The group attended funding workshops and soon secured a donation of £500.

Within only a few weeks, the worries had eased and the group was working more effectively. The committee has grown and meets regularly, the constitution has been adopted, financial stability is a priority and the group is better prepared to provide services at low or no cost to its beneficiaries.

For more information about starting or running a voluntary or community group, or to learn about other support available, contact David Clay at CCVS on 01293 657158 or email [email protected]
