INTRODUCTION
THe passing of the Tour de Francethrough Craven on July 5-6 willundoubtedly be the highlight of thissummer for many of us. But whether you live life in lycra, are anoccasional rider or frankly not all thatbothered about cycling, Craven hassomething for everyone.
Tour legacy
The Tour de France has inspired arainbow of initiatives in our district. lePetit Départ on June 1st is a brand newannual cycling sportive that takes ridersalong much of the stage 1 route of theTour. Craven District Council hasdeveloped 20 new recreational, familyfriendly cycling routes with Free guidesand maps.* Communities are creatingtheir own legacies to the Tour, such asKettlewell’s Community Garden.

le Grand Départ has sparked culturalcelebrations in Craven as part of theyorkshire Festival 2014. They include theCarnival by Bike in Bentham on May 31stTour de Cinema film screenings, CheerSing workshops and the opportunity tobe part of a band that anyone can join inthe Tour of Infinite Possibilities.
Craven Museum& Gallery in Skipton’sTown Hall will host Bikes, legs, Action.This summer long exhibition helpsvisitors understand the ins and outs ofcycling. Take a close look at the helmetof 2012 Tour de France winner SirBradley Wiggins, or simply find out about

The official celebratory bike ride leavesBentham railway station at 11.45 onSaturday 31st May. Cycle to low Benthamto arrive in time to witness the unveiling ofthe Queens Bloomers at midday. If you areup for it, follow the fat sheep signs andfinish the 5 mile ride at the clubhouse onBentham Playing Fields. Arrive back inBentham for the start of the Carnivalprocession at 1.30pm.

The Yorkshire DalesNational Park Authorities are providing facilitiesincluding a big screen and viewing areas using localamenities and toilets as well as disabled facilities, alllocated close to the village centre.
● 3 kILNSEY CRAGThis large limestone cliff overlooks the Tour route andthe River Wharfe. Kilnsey Crag is over 50 metres high,with an overhang of more than 12 metres.

Getting thereroad closures
CAr drivers must keep in mind that manyroads will be closed for much of the day.north yorkshire County Council continuesto update its Grand Départ webpages withthe latest on the Tour de France roadclosures. There are maps and frequentlyasked questions for guidance. Go to:www.northyorks.gov.uk
Parking and camPing
Craven District Council has released a mapwith details of public and temporary carparks along the route. It also showspermanent and temporary camp sites.www.cravendc.gov.uk/tourdefrancemap
walking or cycling
Walking or cycling to a viewing point is anoption, as the route remains accessible topedestrians and cyclists until approximately30 minutes before the arrival of the Tour’spromotional caravan, approximately 2hours before the race. Spectators cycling tothe Skipton Spectator Hub are advised toleave their bike in the managed bicycleparking in Aireville Park.
Public TransPorT
Traveling by bus to the Tour de Franceroute through Craven is likely to bedifficult because of road closures. Trainswill be running as usual, so taking the trainmay be an option for those who want toenjoy the entertainment in Skipton.
• Bring plenty of food, drink and/or cash for top ups
• Check the weather forecast and bring suitable clothing – and even sunscreen!
• Follow instructions of stewards and local signage at all times
• Look out for the caravan, a fun parade of sponsor vehicles that precedes the race.Most give out goodies, such as sweets, hats and key chains
• Look out for helicopters to get an idea of where the riders are. As the helicopters getcloser, you’ll know the cyclists are getting closer too
• Cheer on the riders, but don’t get in the way
• Respect the countryside code: please take home your litter, leave gates and propertyas you find it, stick to designated routes, and do not climb or sit on drystone walls
