    From The Editor

Dear EditorRubbish NumskullsWhy cant folk dispose of their waste inreceptacles provide or take it home to get ridof it. We cant blame it on holiday makersas there appears to be more rubbish dumpedalong the roads and lanes in the winter thanthe summer.Tesco sandwich wrappers and bills dumpedwithin a few yards of their door and bin.Down the lane behind Mundesley Scout Hallone can see pop and beer cans, plastic bagsand bottles, tobacco wrappers, glass

bottles and energy drink cans. Its a pitythat energy isnt put to the mussel powerneeded to carry refuse to dustbins.Down that lane some dog walkers take thetrouble to pick up their animals mess, veryadmirable, but why then throw that bag intothe trees. Thats shocking and disgraceful, this decoration oends. Some councils want to record dog DNAto be able to prosecute owners who dontdiscard mess properly, what a great idea. One wonders if it would be suggested thateveryone DNA is taken with a view to

    prevent these indiscretions.Derek

The wind has been very strong here of lateand many loose pieces of wood have beenon the roads or precariously overhangingthe roads, who should move these? It cannot be any body at the council ascouncil vehicles dash pass them dailyand no one ever stops to just make safe orclear off the highway! The coast road was closed from Sunday eveninguntil Tuesday well that is what the signs stated but

once locals realised it was a case of mostly cryingWolf, with no obvious working in process most ofthe time, they were ignored and driven past, hadthe new government initiative been up and runningTrimingham would have been in for a windfall ofabout 10,000!The new gym at Woodland as shown on the front, isvery welcoming from 0730 until 2130hrs daily, moredetails page ..., no excuses about not being openwhen you are not at work!Thank you to all who contributed to Maya the blindchows operation fund, online, at the bankand more recently atMorrisons report onpage 10.

Dear Editor,Living in Cromer dog owners are fortunate

being allowed into various venues forcoee snacks & meals but in Norwich &Gt.Yarmouth dogs and owners must beseparated-which means leaving your dogat home, to be allowed in anywhere- Idont think so!We have asked in so many places and

been refused by all.We feel that there should be places thatwill let us in as in Cromer; The Bistro,

Pavilion Theatre Coee Reef bar on thepier. Amber(Anns dog) being well knownin the friendly Cafe Main, great home-made cakes & scones & all warm in thiscold weather.HELP If you have any good news will youkindly let us know via Crab Tales,We thank you,Cindy Ann & Amber

DWP TO OPEN OFFICE ATCROMER COUNCIL BUILDING.

Better Services, Better Value for Money DWP @ CouncilOces

Better services and better value for money will result from theDepartment for Work and Pensions move to North Norfolk

District Councils oces in Holt Road, Cromer.

The 14-strong team moved into the building on Monday 11January 2016 and started to run their services from the Counciloces on the same day.

A total of 170m2 oce space was created by moving teamswithin the existing building and reducing the need for storage

space. This has enabled the DWP to have their own publicwaiting area, and for DWP clients to use the Councils self-serve

computers to access services directly. The DWPs move from Garden Street oces in Cromer providesan opportunity to bring services together in one location. It willalso help to reduce the cost of services by sharing the building.

Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Councils Cabinet Memberfor Assets said: As an authority we have to make the most of

the resources we have, especially our oces. Im delighted to bewelcoming the Department for Work and Pensions to our oces

in Holt Road.We know we need to operate as cost-eectively as possible, and

sharing our oce space is a good way to generate income andprovide customers with a more joined up service. With the public

services under one roof my hope is that it will be a lot easier forpeople to get the support they need.

Julia Nix, District Manager for the Department for Work andPensions said: This is my second co location site to move intoNorth Norfolk District Councils Premises. By moving into theLocal Authorities premises we will be making more eective useof space and facilities, while making signicant savings for the

taxpayer. The move also represents an excellent opportunity for DWPto build stronger working links with North Norfolk District

Council to work together to help our customers move closer toemployment and provide a better all-round quality service.

The Council oce building, which is celebrating its 25thanniversary this month, houses Norfolk County Council

Childrens Services, the Early Years Intervention Team andeastlaw the Councils legal services company which sells its

    services to others.

    BEFORE GERTRUDE CAME THEUN-NAMED ONE.

Its never welcome when storms comes a calling but the ChurchRooms at Mundesley had a more traumatic visit than most.On 14th January the storm caused the collapse of the gable end ofthe building. Inside were local table-tennis players who made asafe and speedy exit. The damage is so severe that the important and busy communityvenue will be out of action for several months.

Curious onlookers were drawn toHunstanton Beach to see the dead SpermWhale, one of a number found beachedand dead in Hunstanton, Skegness and inthe Netherlands. Some feel the scenes are ghoulish and thegra ti dawbed by activists on the deadcreatures in bad taste. We are told that the activities of man bothon the water and around the coast mayhave contributed or caused the sad events.Whatever the cause it is hard not to be

    moved by the images.

    DRAGONS AT NORWICHCASTLE

New exhibition to open atNorwich Castle, inspired by

Cressida Cowells How to TrainYour Dragon books.

This spring don your Viking helmet, brush up your Dragonese, and head to NorwichCastle for our exciting new family-friendly exhibition, A Vikings Guide to DeadlyDragons. The exhibition is inspired by Cressida Cowells best-selling childrens booksHow to Train Your Dragon, now a major Hollywood lm and TV franchise.Created by Seven Stories, The National Centre for Childrens Books, this wonderfulexhibition will transport you to a world where Vikings rule and dragons roam. DiscoverBerk, the island home of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. Join this unlikely hero

on his adventures with his tribe of Hairy Hooligans and Toothless, his hunting dragon.Featuring Cressidas original illustrations, the exhibition gives visitors the chance to getup close to the authors notebooks and watch lmed interviews. There are opportunitiesfor creative play, dressing as a Viking, visiting the Hooligan village and wild dragoncave.Alongside the exhibition, a packed programme of dragon-related events for all ageswill inform and entertain. Theres loads for families to enjoy including storytelling withThunderous Thor, Viking activities, drama performances, lm screenings, glitter dragontattoos, dragon art and craft activities and a Chinese dragon dance workshop. With dailyactivities throughout the Half Term and Easter Holidays, youngsters will be kept busyand entertained.

Theres also plenty on oer for adults: our Tuesday lunchtimetalks programme takes a look at dragons in art and mythologyand Norwichs long association with the dragon, theres aworkshop on Writing for Children in partnership with theUniversity of East Anglia and sessions on How to paint yourdragon with the artists who painted last summers GoGoDragonsand How to clean your dragon with the Norwich Castleconservation teamThe Norwich Castle team have also been working closely withthe Norfolk County Council Libraries and Information Serviceto use the opportunity presented by the exhibition to encouragechildrens literacy Cressida herself began drawing and writingstories about dragons when she was nine. The collaborationincludes a specially decorated mobile library which will be

parked up on the Castle mound for special event days throughoutthe exhibitions run. Visitors to the library van will be able toenter a draw for the very special prize of a set of books signed byCressida Cowell and an original framed drawing by the author.

Cressida has kindly agreed to read one of her stories for a special

film that will be shown at libraries across Norfolk on Saturday 6February to celebrate the opening of the exhibition and NationalLibraries Day. At 11am all libraries will read the same chapterfrom her book, to create the biggest story time in Norfolk!

Viking re-enactors will also be parading through the city wavingbanners saying Love your Library on National Library Daywith the idea of getting people to follow the Vikings to thelibrary, once they have viewed the exhibition in the Castle.Commenting on this collaboration, Jennifer Holland, AssistantDirector for Norfolk County Councils Community andEnvironmental Services said: Libraries and Museums haveworked on many successful projects together, and we are very

pleased to be sharing a part of the Deadly Dragons season.Stories about dragons are always popular and the mobile librarywill be full of exciting books for all the family.

John Ward, Chairman of the Norfolk Joint Museums Committee, said: It is a real coup for Norwich Castle Museum to secure thisexhibition, with the added benefit of having Cressida Cowell hereto promote it.

She is one of the biggest childrens authors in the world and Iveno doubt this exhibition will prove to be hugely popular withfamily audiences.

The colourful, creative world of Cressidas books has beendelighting children since they rst appeared in 2003. The series

has now sold over 7 million books worldwide, and translatedinto 37 languages. Cressida grew up in London but each year herfamily spent holidays on a small, uninhabited Scottish island. Her father built a stone house there and in the evenings wouldtell tales of the Vikings who had invaded the island and of thedragons who, according to legend, lived in the caves along theclis.

Cressida thought it possible that dragons might live in that wild, stormy place and by the age of nine she began to draw and writestories about Vikings and dragons. As an adult she developedthis theme into the immensely popular series How to Train YourDragon published by Hodder. Now her imaginative world has

been turned into an exhibition, something which has delightedCressida:

I am incredibly excited and honoured that the How to TrainYour Dragon books are the subject of an exhibition. I hope thata whole new generation of children will be as fascinated bydragons and Vikings as I was when I was a child. I visited whenthe amazing GoGoDragons were in residence, so Im especially

pleased that the exhibition is opening in Norwich.

Whether you are already a fan of How to Train Your Dragonor encountering Hiccup and Toothless for the rst time, youwill nd A Vikings Guide to Deadly Dragons a delightful andinspirational exhibition.

    Mundesley Mumblings. DRY JANUARY !!?

Ironic isnt it in probably the wettest and mildest start to new year in recent years, there is a national movement to encourage us all to stave o the favourite tipple

(whatever that might be) and have a month o the alcohol. So why is it, that when Ineed to drive, or its just there, I can take it or leave it and the moment that I say tomyself, no alcohol for the month thats it, the craving monkey is sat rmly on my

shoulder chattering in my ear at every opportunity? I even had to miss out the booze

aisle in the supermarket the other day, it was just nuts. To coin a phrase lol is that lotsof laughs or just code for lunatic on loose I am really not sure! I do have to laugh at

myself and my friends who have joined me in this challenge, maybe we will make it, butJanuary seems to be such a long month

Sadly for many along the coast here January has brought more than they expected withash oods bringing sadness and hardship to some who have been unfortunate to havebeen through it before and for some their rst experience. Its very dierent seeing iton the telly and being so removed, to hearing it rst hand from those its happened to.Often in those rst few weeks after the all the hullaballoo of the festive season, thereis an air of at resignation, and a distinctly empty purse! For those eected there areweeks and often months of disruption to try and manage at the same time as holding

family, body and soul together. On reection rather than mourning the bareness of mypurse its made me very aware and thankful for what my family and I have. Maybe itsjust people around here, or maybe its part of the distinct North Norfolk culture, but this

seems to be a quality that is embedded in everyone I meet. Its a quality that I thinkmakes this probably one of the best places to live. Of course there are always things thatcan be improved, but that leaves us with the opportunity to do something that can make

a dierence. And change is on the horizon here in Mundesley with new building developments bythe school and over at the Paston end of the village. Having spoken to a few people

there is, as expected mixed views. Those who believe it would be welcoming inand strengthening our already thriving local community, and those hoping that the

percentage of holiday homes does not increase dramatically. My fear would always beof turning into a ghost town outside of tourist season as some of the resorts further northhave already done so. Whilst we welcome visitors as essential to the livelihood of ourarea, there is something lovely about those rst few weeks when it feels like the villagereturns to the locals! Its a new phenomenon for me and my hubby to feel so stronglyabout where we live. Its what made us come in the rst place having migrated from

down country. But to put it all in context and keep my feet rmly on the ground as my

darling ospring informed me, of course the best part of living here is the fact that hecan get chocolate cake from the sh and chip shop!

PS the chattering Monkey won I caved in to a glass or two of Vino. Yep I confessI am rubbish at this stu!

Mundesley Mumblings are the ramblings and personal opinions of T Webster, passionateabout all things North Norfolk and mostly just Mundesley!
