easy to lif without letting the empty plane get tail heav y

With a check list and great care Hol-lingsworth pre1047298ighted the Cozy at one point climbing into the cockpit andstanding in ront o the back seats tocheck the oil Because the Cozy is com- posite and grounding can be a problemHollingsworthrsquos gas caps have wires thatgo directly to the gasoline in each tankHe made all igator clip wire leads to con-nect the gas caps to the uel nozzle

wo areas get special attention on the pre1047298ight One is the nosewheel becauseon one 1047298ight the wheel was not straightand the powerul electric motor jammedthe wheel so tightly that it would notextend or landing Te landing wasuneventul but it did take a while tore1047297nish the 1047297berglass

Te second item that gets careulattention on the pre1047298ight is the propel-ler Currently instal led is a Perormance

Propeller 1047297xed-pitch three-blade propthat looks gorgeous with its thin lami-nations Tere is one layer o 1047297berglassover the entire prop but the tips havethree laminations ldquoFor any o thecanard pushers itrsquos a good idea to havea second proprdquo Hollingsworth says so you can keep 1047298ying while one prop isbeing re1047297nished His other propeller is aCatto rom a 200-horsepower Velocitybut it has too much pitch or the 180 hpin the Cozy

Te panel on this Cozy appears dated

but with all the advances in avionics

these days any panel more than a weekold looks dated Hollingsworthrsquos solu-tion is to build his own moving mapand he showed me a panel-mounted Windows computer and a n LCD screenmuch brighter than those used in com-mercially available products Once hehas the new panel in Hollingsworthintends to get his instrument rating inthe Cozy He travels a lot on businessand says that having that rating willmake a big difference 1047298ying east over the plains Flying west over the mountainshe says you can always 1047297nd a window inthe weather i yoursquore patient

Cozy You BetOnce yoursquore in the seating position is you guessed it cozy With one cush-ion instead o two there was adequateheadroom or my long torso but shoul-der room was touching on the insideand the top o my outside shoulder was

nestling the bottom o the canopy railBecause itrsquos hard to turn your torso ina reclining seat it was diffi cult to lookmuch over your shoulders though Icould see the vertical 1047297ns on each side with some effort Te gas gauges are clear plastic sight gauges in the back seat thatrankly I never looked at Out o sightout o mindmdashand thatrsquos not a plus

axiing out we had the canopy openand a cool breeze in our aces At therunup area we were close to the edge o

the pavement on the lef side and I was

expecting a pivot to the right With a

turning circle that I wish we could claimor our pickup truck Hollingsworth pivoted lef Noise-canceling headsetsmade noise a non-issue

With everything ready we taxied ontoRunway 15 at Meadow Lake elevation6874 eet Te temperature was into the40s but we had 6000 eet o pavementahead o us and by mid-1047297eld we wereup and off at 85 knots indicated Tecanard had enough lif to do its thingand lots more speed than a wing loadingo 20 pounds per square oot would oth-erwise require loading at max gross is23 ps With the canard on the horizon we climbed at 100 knots and 700 pmnot bad at 7000 eet As that would sug-gest and the perormance numbers ver-iy the Cozy is a cross-country cruisernot a short-1047297eld airplane and or thatmatter not an aerobatic airplane

airplane but the O-360 typically usesbetween 9 and 95 gph at 75 powerrich o peak EG

Te Cozy carries 52 gallons o uelcall it 57 hours absolute so aboutour and three quarters with a smartreserve Tat will get you rom here to

there nicely Depending upon how welltheyrsquore built (minimum Bondo) andhow well theyrsquore equipped Cozy pay-loads are typically 950 to 1000 poundsleaving around 650 poundsrsquo ull-uel payload Te back seat is or small peo- ple or large baggage Hollingsworthhas survived riding back there but onlybecause the 1047298ight was short

One o the main perormance limi-tations o the Cozy has to do with thelifing ability o the canard Te Mark

IVrsquos is 2 inches per side shorter thanthe Cozy 3rsquos and this is to give extramargin rom a deep stall phenomenonencountered and 1047297xed on an early model Velocity 20 years ago What happened was that both wings ront and backstalled and the Velocity descended vertical ly in a stable unrecoverable con-1047297guration with no orward airspeedTis has not been encountered on theCozy but just to make sure that it wonrsquothappen especially on a poorly con-structed example the canard is clippedessentially guaranteeing that it willstall beore the main wing does

Te downside o this is that with asmaller canard itrsquos harder to lif the noseon takeoff Te GU airoil has more lifat low speeds than the Roncz and thatrsquos part o the tradeoff Te downside o theGU airoil is that when contaminated with water its lifing ability is dimin-ished Hollingsworth says that the water

contamination sensitivity is almostbinary Either the airoil is wet or drycontaminated or not generating normallif or not with nearly instantaneoustransitions between the t wo states

Beers Before LaunchAnother part o the pitch equation isballast I Hollingsworth wants to 1047298ythe Cozy solo he makes sure that hegets a ew cans o Coors Light in 1047297rstmdashas in 1047297rst to lif off at the ront o the air-

Many kit aircraft have manufactured parts that are assembled The Cozy kits are insteadmaterials from which you manufacture parts especially 1047297berglass parts You can buykits grouped of similar materials (all the 1047297berglass in one ldquokitrdquo foam kit metals kit etc)or you can buy kits that have everything you need to complete a chapter in the assemblymanual such as canard elevators nosegear Either set of kits will give you almost allof the airframe Wheels and brakes are included but not canopy or cowl which canbe bought from third parties Ready to assemble metal parts are also available Notincluded as on most kits are engine propeller instruments interior paint and fullelectrical system and most of those are available from Aircraft Spruce amp SpecialtyBut rest assured that the 1047297nishing kit includes lots of sandpaper

cans which are 1047297l led with lead shot andepoxy the Cozy is easy to over-rotateConversely leaving ull ballast in withtwo people up ront would do bad thingsto the takeoff roll Part o the reason orHollingsworthrsquos careul pre1047298ights isthat he has a partner in the airplane andhe wonrsquot necessarily know exactly howhis partner lef the airplane afer the last1047298ight especially with regard to ballast

Right a fer takeoff I took the controlsand met the ailerons On the original VariEze the control suraces on thecanard were set up to provide both pitchand roll control a nify idea that reallysimpli1047297ed control linkages because it wasnrsquot ar rom the ront stick to themoving suraces Te only trouble with

this idea was that it didnrsquot work welland so ailerons were put on the main(back) wing

Tose wing-mounted ailerons have acurious eel to them however It doesnrsquottake much orce to get the 1047297rst incre-ment o roll rate but itrsquos not a slow rollrate itrsquos a moderate roll rate Itrsquos not asbad as al l or nothing but itrsquos like askingor a teaspoon o roll rate and gettinga cup Adding in a lot more stick dis- placement gives little additional roll ratecompared to the initial one

Hollingsworth (who has not yet1047298own with the RV pilots on the 1047297eld)and other canard pilots ondly reer tothis as ldquosportyrdquo handling A CFI mightexpress this as ldquochallengingrdquo An engi-

Transoceanic itrsquos not but the Cozy has solid cruise performance It needs long runwaysrelatively speaking but has great crosswind capability in the right hands

A rare front quarter view of a Cozy Many planes would only see a rear quarter viewdiminishing

neer might say that the breakout orcesare high relative to the roll input orcesrequired but eed him a ew beers to gethis guard down and he might call themldquotwitchyrdquo As Hollingsworth puts it the

ailerons ldquoinspire pilots to do things theyshouldnrsquotrdquo

I managed to beriend the aileronsmostly but it took concentration liketrying to be cordial with somebody whorsquos mad at you Even with the effort tobecome amiliar the ailerons surprisedme on one landing I was concentratinghard on airspeed altitude and energymanagement so hard that only thesecond string gray cells were worryingabout roll and I actually got into a pilot

induced oscillation (PIO) in roll Tisis the reverse o the traditional high- workload landing scenario in which pilots get into a PIO in pitch while theroll behaves itsel Some o this was mebut a lot o it was the airplane Despite plenty o time in type and a nice touchin canards Hollingsworth admits that when hersquos on a cross-country 1047298ight and paying attention to other things some-times the ai leron response zaps him outo the blue I suspect that at least part othe 1047297x would be to get absolutely all theriction out o the aileron linkages withball bearings Te system now is push- pull tubes but the bearings are Delrin

And Now for PitchPitch handling is not diffi cult but it isalso different rim makes a world odifference in 1047298ying the airplane and works on this airplane with an electricmotor adjusting spring tensions Te

trim motor speed at cruise is too ast orthe uninitiated on a 1047297rst 1047298ight Holling-sworth says that on cross-country 1047298ightshe can go a hal hour without touchingthe elevators letting the autopilot keepthe plane headed in the right directionHowever he admits that hersquoll adjust thetrim our or 1047297ve times on takeoff andinitial climb as the plane accelerates

Pitch pointing tasksmdashraising or low-ering the nose to a predetermined atti-tudemdashwere easy Te stick-ree stability

tests were interesting in comparison

o perorm those tests the airplane istrimmed or a given speed Ten thestick is pushed orward or pulled back

to give an airspeed change o 10 knotsand the stick is released Te point is tosee how many cycles o higher and lowerairspeed the plane goes through beoreit returns to the trim speed

On the Cozy the airspeed eventu-ally settled to near but not at the initialspeed Even more curious afer say pull-ing back on the stick to lose 10 knotsthe Cozy would lose more speed beorestarting the nose back toward neutralTe bottom line is that the pitch han-dling seemed 1047297ne and the Cozy mayhave ldquo1047298unkedrdquo the conventional pitchstability tests because the static source isin the uselage near the rudder pedalsand as the angle o attack changed thestatic pressure changed giving bogusinstrument readings Also the springsmay have been masking some riction inthe elevator linkage which contributedto the results

Canards arenrsquot supposed to stall in

a conventional sense and when I heldthe stick back or high angle o attack1047298ight we got a mild nose porpoise as thecanard stalled and recovered Holling-sworth said the bobbing was much more pronounced with me up ront than it is when the plane is 1047298own solo

Back to Home PlateHollingsworth let me attempt hal adozen landings and it was clear that yoursquod want transition training in a Cozy

i you didnrsquot have any canard time Pat-

tern speeds are high at 90 knots down- wind slowing to 80 and then 75 onshort 1047297nal comparable to a Cessna 210

Te glide is ast and 1047298at but i you donrsquotlower the nose in turns in the traffi c pattern the airpla ne can develop extrasink rate though some o that may havebeen a persistent downdraf on base legItrsquos tempting to 1047298y a ast 1047298at approachbut thatrsquos poor technique and gives thebrakes a workout

Afer I commented that the Cozy would be a terrible plane to use or acommercial 1047298ight test with its require-ment to land within 200 eet past a lineHollingsworth demonstrated such alanding no problem But i you do whatit takes to touch down on a point youmight end up with extra energy or thebrakes to burn off and vice versa Also you donrsquot want to 1047298are the Cozy like you would a conventional airplanemdasharrestsink rate and let it roll on Donrsquot try tohold it off Part o the landing drill is to put down the belly board or more dragIt helps but it doesnrsquot seem to make

nearly the difference that 30deg o 1047298apsdoes in a Cessna However it does affectthe cowling air1047298ow and makes the heatmuff on the exhaust work lots better

Once on the ground Long-EZ driv-ers leave the speed brake extended to protect the prop rom debris kicked upby the nosewheel Cozy drivers retractthe speed brake to get more coolingair into the engine because the Cozydoesnrsquot have a P-51 style scoop it has abig NACA duct on the bottom o the af

uselage to gather cooling air

cans which are 1047297l led with lead shot andepoxy the Cozy is easy to over-rotateConversely leaving ull ballast in withtwo people up ront would do bad thingsto the takeoff roll Part o the reason orHollingsworthrsquos careul pre1047298ights isthat he has a partner in the airplane andhe wonrsquot necessarily know exactly howhis partner lef the airplane afer the last1047298ight especially with regard to ballast

Right a fer takeoff I took the controlsand met the ailerons On the original VariEze the control suraces on thecanard were set up to provide both pitchand roll control a nify idea that reallysimpli1047297ed control linkages because it wasnrsquot ar rom the ront stick to themoving suraces Te only trouble with

this idea was that it didnrsquot work welland so ailerons were put on the main(back) wing

ailerons ldquoinspire pilots to do things theyshouldnrsquotrdquo
