OWLstanding Students Each week Covington elementary focuses on a different positive
characteristic word. Teachers select students performing the acts of the
characteristic words each week. The following students received
OWLstanding student awards for this month. It is a great feeling knowing
students can stand out by doing the right things. Our characteristic words for
this month were opportunity, personal compass, decide, malama, effort, and
contribute. Great job to all showing their Covington pride with great character
traits.

New Signage You may have noticed the new sign on our
elementary building. If you were not
fortunate to have known Mrs. Wiseman,
here is some information about her.
In 1996, CISD’s school board approved
naming the newly constructed elementary
building the “Angela “Coot” Wiseman
Elementary Building” in her honor. Mrs.
Wiseman’s years of teaching expanded a
half century and for at least one family four
generations.
Mrs. Wiseman began her teaching career
in 1930 at the Woodrow Wilson School in
the Woodrow Community where she taught
for two years. From 1932 until 1934, she
taught at Island Grove School in Johnson
County. After a time out for raising her
family and helping her husband with his
grocery business, she returned to teach at
Covington ISD in 1954. In 1994, Mrs.
Wiseman retired from full time teaching to
half day as our Chapter 1 reading teacher,
a position she held until 2000 when she
fully retired at 90 years of age. At this time,
according to the Teacher Retirement
System, she was the oldest teacher
actively teaching in the state.

Upcoming Scholastic
Book Fair
Get ready for “Paws for Books” at the
upcoming book fair. Let us let the cat out of
the bag and fill it with books. The books are
scheduled to arrive on March 26th
. They will be
tailing the tails in our library until March 30th.
Plan on some fun throughout that week.
Parents may volunteer to join in the fun by
contacting the library. There is always a need
for volunteers during book fair week.
A.R. Goal Party Students who met their Accelerated Reading
Goals during the first semester of school
three out of three times were treated to a few
hours of bowling.
On January 24, 2018, eighty elementary
students enjoyed knocking down pins at the
Cleburne Pin Center. They were also treated
to a slice of pizza and drinks.
Don’t worry if you did not go first semester,
everyone gets to start fresh for the second
semester. Just get your AR reading goals 3
out of 3 six weeks and you will be going on
our next fun AR Goal Party.
Pancake Supper
There will be a Pancake Supper and Auction on
February 24, 2018 held by the Moms for National
Honor Society.
The dinner starts at 5 p.m. and will cost $6.00 per
person. Proceeds will go to the National Honor
Society’s end of the year trip.
Student Council The Covington JH/HS Student Council is active this winter. After
a successful Coronation, they have turned their sites to preparing
for the state convention in April. In the coming weeks, they will be
highlighting the Texas Association of Student Councils statewide
project, Human Trafficking. They are planning several activities to
raise awareness on this growing problem. Stay tuned for more
information.
They were asked to provide hygiene kits for Hillsboro Interfaith
Ministries Food Bank. They were happy to provide 20 kits to
them in January. It left their supplies low. They are asking for
donations of unused hotel size toiletries. They also have an
Amazon wish list set up where travel size toiletries can be bought
and shipped directly to us. The address for the wish list
is http://a.co/79ks2bq. Please consider helping them out so they
may help our community. Thanks for helping us out!
Council members were issued letters for their parents and the
student to sign with intentions of going to convention. Those
letters will determine how many students will be able to
go. Intents were due on January 22nd
.

Leadership Development
Ms. Bowling held a goat clinic, so the students could practice
for the County Show!
The Hill County Show was held in January with many students
competing and placing with their show animals.
Classroom & School-Wide Happenings
Math, Science, and Technology with Mrs. Benton Fourth grade math students have been working hard on multi step math problems. They also have started a project that students will be researching how Math is used in careers. This will be showcased at the Info Expo in February. Students are also doing a Heritage Project in Social Studies where they are learning about their family and heritage.
Science and Health with Mrs. Nickell
Fifth grade Science lab received a hands on look at owl pellets. They are reviewing and getting ready to gear up for the STAAR assessment. Part of their reviewing is really getting some hands-on time. This helps concrete everything they have talked about. They just finished weather and climate so if you see them outside embracing this Texas weather, just honk and wave! They are just
enjoying a little bit of science without the pencil and paper.
Second Grade with Mrs. Hardin Second graders spent the first semester of school enjoying Mrs. Hardin’s learning is fun attitude. They are
patiently waiting for the spring book fair to get their hands on some more fun reading material.
Kindergarten with Mrs. Manning We love winter! Kindergarten has been learning about winter this month. They have ice skated,
made snow, read books by Jan Brett, ate hedgehogs and bears! They are also starting to learn
about addition and subtraction. They are doing very well reading three letter words! Exciting
things are happening in Kindergarten.
Dental Hygiene Awareness Colwick Dental from Cleburne visited students in Pre-k through 6
th grade on February 1
st to generate
awareness about the importance of brushing their teeth regularly.
Pre-K Pre-K has been busy comparing and contrasting literature. Learning their colors, letters, and letter sounds. It has
been a great first semester of learning and fun with Mrs. Shaver.
Blood Drive
Covington will be holding a blood drive on February 13th
from 10 am
to 3 pm in the HS gym foyer. If you are 16 years old or older, please
stop by to donate. If you plan on donating be sure to hydrate with
water prior to donating and afterward.
UIL Oral Reading The elementary UIL Oral Reading contestants
took some of Dr. Heskett’s time to practice their
poems. UIL takes patience and time for all
involved. We are thankful for the fun and positive
leadership here at Covington ISD.
Bad Weather Day
Due to extra minutes built into
this year’s calendar, it will NOT
be necessary to use a Bad
Weather Day to make up for the
day we missed on January 16th.
Our first scheduled bad weather
makeup day is March 9th
. It will
still be a holiday as long as we
do not miss another day due to
inclement weather.
A Message from Dr. Heskett
We are deeply saddened that one of our students, Danakah Abels, of Covington ISD passed
away on January 26, 2018. We extend our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to her
family and friends, as they will certainly be in our thoughts and prayers.
Students and staff may react to this tragedy in different ways, expressing their feelings in
response to the loss of one of our school community members, some more intensely than
others. Crisis counselors from Region 12 ESC and surrounding school districts will be available
Monday, January 29, 2018, providing support for our students.
We encourage you to also talk with your child as it is important for students to express their
feelings to trusted adults and loved ones. Traumatic events such as the sudden loss of a friend
or peer can trigger emotional responses that may require additional counseling support.
A Celebration of Life
The family of Danakah Abels wishes to invite everyone to the Hilco Civic Center on Saturday, February 3rd
, between 12 and 3 p.m.
to help them celebrate the life of Danakah. The civic center is located at 1000 S. Files Street in Itasca. Danakah touched so many
in our community with her strong will and energizing personality. Stop by and share your memories with everyone.
Poetry
My “Talent” By B.W.
I always say that everyone is better than me and I have
nothing special about me But I'm lying
My talent is pretending to be okay everyday
I'm pretty good at it
Ha! Ha, you thought that smile was real?
I guess I'm pretty good at my "talent".
But there are some days
when I'm just tired and I can't show it off... so I take a break
I get an attitude with everyone in the house.
Attitude=trouble
Trouble=grounded
Grounded=room
Room=crying until I fall asleep.
And then once my 1 day break is over
I go back to work
Put that smile on, get my fake laugh ready... and I'm good to
go.
I have a hard time actually being happy
Why?
Because it's hard when you're not good at anything.
You always have this one person who's always better than
you
And then it's 100x worse when that person is always around
you
Every single day, I'm constantly looking at her and looking
back at myself and asking
"why can't I be like her”
“why am I fatter than her”
“why can't I be as pretty as she is”
“why am I not as funny as she is”
“why can’t guys fall for me like they fall for her”
“why can't I be GREAT at everything... just like her.
“Why does she get to have so many “talents”... and I don’t”
And then my head goes down
My cover is blown
My "talent" is gone
And the tears and attitudes are, once again, back.
Life Struggles By T.G
Hi. I’m depression,
And I’m just another lesson.
You wish I was gone, but I’m still here.
Every time you think of me, out come the tears
And I’m just a thing that hurts inside
And takes away all your hope and pride.
You could walk away, but that won’t help,
And I’m just a thing that you can’t bear.
Looking in the mirror it’s really hard to stare.
Out comes tears,
Out comes terror.
Nothing else can make me any better.
Oh, however you think that you’re all that,
See that I’m a take it right back.
And here comes that track, the track that I’m running from,
fear.
Oh, wait, no I can’t do that here.
It’s hard for me to even stare,
Filled with concrete and with half breath,
It feels like someone pushing on my chest.
Hard in the knees, hard in the face,
It feels like I’m just a discourse,
That’s why I get blue and purple in the face.
