How does AP work?How does AP work? Students takes AP courses in grades 11 and 12 that include

additional course material to prepare them for the AP exam, usually written in May of the grade 12 year.

AP exams test material that has similarities with first year university courses.

Students who excel in grades 9 and 10 who are looking for a challenge may consider selecting AP courses in grade 11.

Students are advised to complete the PSAT test in their grade 10 year which gives an indication of potential success in AP exams.

Following the mid-term report in April, counsellors will review student achievement and PSAT scores to identify AP course participants.

French Immersion French Immersion Certificate Nepean students who pursue French Immersion certification are

expected to take at least 10 courses from the Immersion course offerings between grades 9 – 12 (four compulsory French Language courses and six other courses taught in French). Other than the compulsory French Language course, students have a variety of courses to choose from in Science, Social Science and Humanities. Nepean’s Immersion program is exceptionally strong, and a number of our students also write the AP French exam at the grade 11 or 12 level, participate in the Board wide «Concours d’art oratoire» and the «Concours de français» which is jointly sponsored by the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.

A certificate in Extended French may also be granted if the student has successfully completed the sequence of four French language courses and three other courses taught in French.

French Immersion Delf (Diplôme d’études en langue française) For the past four years, Nepean students have been taking full

advantage of this great opportunity that the OCDSB has offered them to have their level of French proficiency evaluated and internationally recognized with this diploma. Indeed, the Board has been leading a pilot project for the Ontario Ministry of Education to examine and consider the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and the DELF for use in Ontario schools. Grade 12 students in Core French and in French Immersion have challenged the test level of their choice and have been extremely successful and have earned the diploma issued by the Centre international d’études pédagogiques, France, which is sure to be an asset in their future.
