Bill Pay Saves time and Worry

Have you ever found a bill that you thought you paid earlier in the month? Now it’s late. The Southern Federal Credit Union’s electronic bill payment service can eliminate this worry.

Direct payment is the electronic transfer of an authorized payment from a member’s checking or savings account into the account of a biller, financing or investment company. It’s ideal for recurring payments such as household bill payments, insurance premiums, automatic investments and savings plans, mortgage payments, auto loan payments and charitable donations.

You can schedule payments in advance so bills get paid even when you’re away on vacation or away on business.

Electronic bill payment studies show that consumers using automated bill payment generally become more responsible with funds and usually have higher account balances.

Overdraft Security Privilege– pg.2 Zero % Financing– pg.3 Relay for Life– pg.4

For the ninth year, The Southern Federal Credit Union participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Fayette County.

This year’s team raised over $13,000 by holding bake sales, wrapping Christmas gifts, holding our 2nd annual

Chili Cook-off, preparing lunch for employees, selling stickers for employees to wear jeans on Fridays, and selling cancer awareness

items. Team co-captains were Mahli Lowder and Karen Kane along with team members Lori Barbe, Michael Fowler, Tiffany Graham, Paula Hasberger, Mandy Jones, Barbara Langston, Lori Lowder, Sam Lowder, Crystal Moore, Cynthia Pope, John Purdy, Christie Rentz, Adrienne Rigney, Carolyn Roberts and Kristine Whitener.

Highlights for The Southern team included:

• Congratulations go out to Karen Kane, Carolyn Roberts, Barbara Langston, Lori Lowder and Mahli Lowder who each raised over $1,000.

• Brandon “Baby-licious” Holiday, who finished 2nd runner-up in the “Miss” Relay 2010. John Purdy placed second in the Box Car Derby.

• The Southern received the Spirit Award for Local Businesses for the second year in a row. This recognition is awarded to the team for participation at Relay and for fundraising and participation throughout the fundraising year.

• The Southern team took home the bronze medal for overall participation and placing in the first annual Relay Olympics.

Thank you to all the members who helped support The Southern Relay For Life team. This was another record breaking year for us and we could not have done it without your generous support.

The Southern supported its Relay Team by paying the participation fees, and through buying items for the team to decorate and sell. The Southern also purchased torches to remember our own Cerena Simmons, who we lost this past year to cancer, and to celebrate our employee survivors.

In the market for a new or used car?The Southern is offering a great rate… as low as 4.50 APR* on new or used autos. Know before you go… get pre-approved or apply for a loan TODAY! For convenience, apply online at www.southernonline.com

or call our helpful loan representatives at 800.338.3275.

do you have a hIgher rate vehIcle loan at another fInancIal InstItutIon?Refinancing with us, at a rate as low as 4.50% APR, may provide you a great savings. Act now!

*Loan example: for financing at 4.50% APR,60 monthly payments of $18.85 per $1,000. Rates and terms subject to credit approval and subject to change without notice.

Home Loansfrom Start...to Finish! Is the siren song of zero percent financing luring you back into vehicle

showrooms? Before you automatically assume zero percent financing is a better deal than a car loan from the credit union, consider these three things:

1. You may not be eligible. It’s a tried, but true, saying: What the big print promises, the small print taketh away. The footnote advising that “Not all buyers will qualify” and “Subject to credit approval” means that the zero or extreme low financing rate is reserved for people with a good credit score. What does that mean to you? According to myfico.com, there is no single “score cutoff” used by all lenders so it’s hard to say what a “good” credit score means outside the context of the lending situation and that “one auto lender may offer lower interest rates to people with FICO scores above 680 while another auto lender may use 720.”

2. You may pay more for the vehicle. If you arrive in the showroom and announce that you want the zero percent financing, you may get it - but you may also put yourself in a poorer negotiating

position for the total vehicle cost. Conversely, if you are pre-approved for a loan at the credit union, keep that close to the vest as well. How you plan to pay for the car should be the last thing you disclose, not the first.

3. Your choices may be limited. The super sales on financing are often limited to a specific group of vehicles, typically the slow sellers. A vehicle is a big purchase; make sure that you get your money’s worth.

Bottom line: Car dealers want to sell cars and they don’t want to leave any money on the table. Even if the zero percent financing seems right for you, stop by your credit union to make sure you are getting the deal that’s right for you.

*APR equals Annual Percentage Rate. Rate offered is based upon applicant’s credit history. Rate offered will not fall below established floor limits. Credit conditions and qualifications apply.

Overdraft Security Privilege* is a service linked to your checking account, and it provides added security against having checks and other items returned to merchants for insufficient funds. The Southern will charge a set fee for every item paid under the provisions of the Overdraft Security Privilege - but you can avoid the additional steps and fees normally required by the merchant. Overdraft Security Privilege is not a line of credit. It is a service that gives you a reserve for emergencies or unexpected situations. It can limit the costs and hassles associated with overdrawing your account. Soon, we will no longer be able to provide this coverage automatically for ATM withdrawals and Debit Card transactions – so you need to tell us if you want to keep it.

There are no program fees associated with Overdraft Security Privilege. Fees are charged only as the service is used to honor items on an overdrawn account.

• The Southern will charge a standard Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee for each item honored

• If multiple items are presented on the same day, each check will be assessed a corresponding NSF fee

After August 15, 2010 we will not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to:

• ATM transactions• Everyday debit card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

If you want The Southern Federal Credit Union to authorize and pay overdrafts on your ATM and everyday debit card transactions after August 15, 2010, please call the Telephone Service Center at 800-338-5882 or visit www.southernonline.org and select the “OSP Opt-In” tab on our homepage.

your personal information

Vishing can be simply defined as the criminal act of misusing voice over IP (VoIP) and social engineering in order to access private financial and other personal information from public, with the objective of some financial reward.

It’s very hard to trace vishing, so you as a consumer should always stay conscious and suspicious if you receive a phone message or email asking you to provide credit card numbers, bank accounts, etc. If you receive such a message, DO NOT provide any information or respond to the message. Contact your bank or credit card company to verify that the message was sent from them - chances are it was not!

Some common vishing methods:

ONLINE vERSION Scammers send a false e-mail which appears to be sent from your bank or credit card company. These e-mails mention that there is some security problem and ask that you call a phone number. When you do, you are asked to enter your account number, credit card number, or other information, allowing the scammer access to your accounts.

COLD CALL Some scammers use a technique of cold calling that shows a genuine local number on your caller ID to earn your trust. Then a pre-recorded message tells you that your account needs to be verified because of some security reason, and you are requested to enter your bank account number, passwords etc. FAKE CALLER ID NUMBERS Scammers are able to obtain fake caller ID numbers that appear to be from an actual financial institution or company, making you believe the call is legitimate. These false numbers can be purchased over the internet for just a few dollars.

To stay safe, ALWAYS CALL YOUR FINANCIAL INSTITUTION OR CREDIT CARD COMPANY to verify their request for your information.
