Earl Russell has been installed to-day as Lord Rectorof the University. The installation ceremony took placein the hall of the Marischal College, and the inauguraladdress was delivered in the Music Hall, which was crowdedin every part. The noble Earl proposed to speak upon thefollowing two questions : first, Is there any law or general ruleby which the decline of States is governed ? and secondly, Whatis the general aspect of the world at present, and does it teachus to hope or to despond ? With regard to the first question,his Lordship referred to "the state of Rome, which rose by somuch wisdom, by so much valour in arms, by such exceedingsagacity in its choice of means of government, by such powerin carrying its conquests of other countries to the very heightof power. How came it that that great power, so extensive,so wise, declined, and at length fell to the ground? The stateof religion caused the fall of that empire. When the spirit ofliberty has been overpowered and sunk in the vices of a corruptpeople it cannot be restored by the dagger. What was requiredwas not the death of a usurper but the regeneration of apeople." In the second part of the discourse his Lordship mani-fested great caution, because, as he said, "it is perilous groundto walk upon, and there are ashes but a short way beneath thesurface which I might find burning under my foot." He merelyreferred in general terms to the present hopeful state of Italyand of Africa.. The address contained many wise and generoussentiments, and was listened to with great attention. Theconduct of the students on this occasion was highly exemplary.Aberdeen, Nov. llth, 1861.

CORONERSHIP OF EAST SUSSEX.

WE regret to state that Dr. Beard has retired from the con-test for this important office. It seems that the impressionwhich he bad, when becoming candidate, that the freeholdersof the whole county could vote at the election, and which wasset forth in Dr. Lockhart Robertson’s letter in THE LANCET oflast week, was erroneous, inasmuch as only the freeholders ofthe Eastern Division will be entitled to a voice in the election.As the large number of those to whom Dr. Beard is known areresident at Brighton, and would be unable to take part in theelection, he would be deprived of the support which was anti.cipated. We trust that some thoroughly competent medicalman, who could secure the support of his brethren and thefreeholders in East Sussex, will at once fill the hiatus.

SOCIETY FOR THE RELIEF OF VVIDOWS AND ORPHANSOF MEDICAL MEN.—The annual meeting of the members of thisSociety was held on the 26th ult., in pursuance of the RoyalCharter of Incorporation recently granted, when a letter fromthe Rev. Arthur Stone was read, acknowledging a letter ofcondolence addressed to him by the Society on the demise ofhis father, their president, Thomas Arthur Stone, Esq. Mr.Ware was elected president, he being the eldest living memberof the Society-a very appropriate selection, more particularlyas his father was one of the earliest supporters, if not one of thefounders of the institution. James T. Ware, Esq., Dr. Hamil-ton Roe (acting), and Richard S. Eyles, Esq., were electedtreasurers.

MARYLEBONE: THE CASE OF CONSPIRING TO DEFRAUD.- William Anderson, alias Wilson, was brought up from theHouse of Detention, and Alfred Field Henery, alias OsterfieldWray, surrendered in discharge of his bail to answer the chargeof conspiring to defraud Captain Montague Augustus Clarke,of the 50th Foot. There was no additional evidence givenbeyond what has already appeared, and both parties werecommitted for trial at the Central Criminal Courc. Henery’sbail was again tendered and accepted, himself in £ 500, and twosureties in £250 each. The same bail would have been takenfor Anderson, but none was forthcoming.THE LAVIES TESTIMONIAL DINNER.- We would re-
