In RemembranceJohn Michael Brooks, Berklee College of Music graduate, was originally contracted to play violin in this production of Next to Normal. We regret to inform that John Michael passed away at the young age of 27, leaving his family and friends much too soon. Not only was John a tremendous musician but he was also a kind, caring friend to those who were fortunate enough of having the opportunity to perform with him. John Michael left a mark on everyone who heard him play, including as the violinist in a past production of Next to Normal. He is irreplaceable and will never be forgotten by his family, friends, teachers, and fellow musicians. We thank you for the music, John Michael.

The Time and Place: Now: the Goodman’s home, a high school, a doctor’s office, etc.

Next to Normal runs about 2 hours and 20 minutes and has one 15 minute intermission.

We hope you got a chance to see King Charles III, our last production and a San Diego premiere. We pulled out all the stops to get the rights; and with continued persistence, we brought King Charles III to you first! Now on to 2019! Our play selection committee has already heard submissions for 2019 and we are deep in discussion to select another great season for you. Look for our announcement mid-summer.

In our seasons of classics, comedies, dramas, and popular musicals, we like to offer a few productions that may not be done often, some thought-provoking and poignant pieces, and youth productions, so we can entertain the widest community audience and bring some new perspective. Next to Normal is one of those shows, dealing with the topic of mental illness. N2N won Outstanding Score and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010. The music tells a story that touches so many families today.

Director Chad Oakley was extremely passionate about doing this show and to partner with Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of San Diego. During the run of N2N we are raising funds and awareness

for this non-profit who offers a wide range of resources to San Diego area. Chad’s passion turned big vision for this show as you are about to see with the grand set and special lighting. He pulled together a great team who have all been working hard to bring you this production and we hope you enjoy it.

I want to close by encouraging you to become a new member or increase your current level during our What the World Needs Now Campaign. From May 25 – June 24th when you purchase tickets to our cabaret The Songs of Burt Bacharach and add a minimum $50 donation, you will receive reserved seating, a CPH membership with privileges, an opportunity to support the Playhouse, and a special campaign thank you: your choice of a coffee/tea or wine package to enjoy at one of the shows. It is only a 30-day campaign I hope you join our family; your support goes a long way building our seasons.

Thank you for attending and supporting our wonderful community theatre.

Sincerely, Katy Skyrud and Coronado Playhouse Board

I was first introduced to the music from Next to Normal in 2009 by Amy Fritsche while stage managing Chapter Two at Scripps Ranch Theatre. I fell in love with the music and immediately started listening to it repeatedly. I saw the national tour in 2011 and discovered the story underneath the music and how music that may at first appear to be cheerful pop/rock is actually telling a dark, emotional story. As a director and designer, I am drawn to darker stories, especially if you are led to feel empathy for the characters, cry over their pain, but left with hope and light at the end. I am grateful to Katy, Barron and the rest of the board of directors from Coronado Playhouse on taking the chance to put on this musical. This is not a typical small theatre musical since it has a small cast, challenging subject material, and difficult music, but they

were willing to give me a chance. I am also thankful for the support of the most talented group of designers, musicians, artists and actors that we could find. The dedication, persistence and patience of the cast and crew of this show has been humbling. I am honored by the amount of time and effort that has been put into this show by everyone involved. Also, special thanks to Martín and his band for bringing the music I fell in love with to life, to Jen and Anthony for taking care of all the details and to Kathy Parks for keeping us all on track and providing food.As a director, I have learned from many talented directors, I could not begin to list them all, but special thanks needs to be given to Teri Brown for showing me how to collaborate and tell a story, to James P Darvas for getting the details right and to Jennie Grey Connard for how to make a show spectacular. Now, sit up, engage and join us in feeling all the emotions in Next to Normal.
