WEEKEND ROAD TRIP TIPSA long weekend provides the perfect opportunity to hop into thecar and embark on a road trip. Sometimes it doesn't take an ex-tended vacation to recharge your batteries. A brief change ofscenery and venue can make for quite the respite as well.

Road trips also tend to be more affordable than longer getaways.If you have the benefit of a tow hitch and a camper, you alreadyhave your accommodations. But even if you still need lodging,there are several budget motels that can fit the bill for overnightlodging along your route. Here are some other road trip tips.

* Before embarking, take out a map and plan your excursion.Stick to locations that are within reasonable driving distance fromhome. If you roam too far, you will spend more time behind thewheel than you will enjoying your destination. Locations no morethan five to six hours away should suffice.

* Get your vehicle in road trip shape by ensuring it is in goodworking condition. If your car is scheduled for an oil change, getone before leaving. In addition, top off fluids and be sure that tiresare properly inflated.

* Stick to the scenic routes. While they may not save you traveltime, avoiding interstates in favor of picturesque backroads willmake for a much more relaxing and visually inspiring trip. Sched-ule rest stops so you can get out of the car and explore along theway to your destination. Taking backroads may also help youavoid some of your fellow weekend travelers.

* Make your long weekend a Saturday through Monday affair. Youmay find the roads are more congested Friday through Sunday.Simply starting your trip on Saturday and returning on Mondaycould save you the headache of driving in heavy traffic.

* Scope out low-cost activities at your destination. Many nationalparks are inexpensive and may only charge one fee per vehicleto enter. After Labor Day, many beaches no longer charge entryfees, making them an affordable option.

Take advantage of cooler temperatures and picturesque sceneryby planning an autumn weekend road trip.

KEY TO COOKING WITH PUMPKINSAutumn is ripe with vibrant colors and scenery. One of the morevivid sights this time of year are the bright, orange pumpkins thatadorn walkways and front porches of homes and businesses. Notonly are pumpkins ideal for decorating, but theyʼre also great toeat.

Some people who plan to carve jack-o-lanterns mistakenly be-lieve the same type of pumpkin can be used in their favoriterecipes. But what carving pumpkins have in visual flair, they usu-ally lack in flavor and substance. Instead, would-be pumpkincookers should look to other varieties if they plan to serve pump-kin on the menu.

Pumpkins are available from September through December, butthey peak in October. Many smaller pumpkins are better andsweeter for cooking. Mini pumpkins, sugar, cheese, and piepumpkins are varieties commonly used in recipes. The big jack-o-lantern pumpkins have stringy, watery flesh and will provide lit-tle to no pulp for cooking.

Select a pumpkin as you would any other type of squash. Lookfor a firm pumpkin with no bruises or soft spots. The pumpkinalso should have a deep orange color. Store pumpkins in a cool,dark area until ready for use to prolong freshness. Wash the ex-terior of the pumpkin in cool water before cutting to remove anydirt and bacteria on the surface of the pumpkin so it wonʼt betransferred to the pulp of the pumpkin.

Slice the pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and any stringymaterial. Rinse and save the seeds for planting or roasting. Putthe pumpkin pieces in the microwave to cook or you can steamor bake them until the pulp is soft and the pumpkin falls off of theskin. Cool the pumpkins, then puree the pulp until itʼs smooth.You may want to strain the pureed pumpkin with a cheese clothto remove any excess water before using in a pie recipe. Bakedbreads may benefit from the extra moisture.

Pumpkins are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitaminC, riboflavin, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin E, thiamin,niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, and phos-phorus. Theyʼre also low in fat and calories. Pumpkin puree canreplace the oil in some baking recipes, much as you would useapplesauce.

Teens And Tires: What They Donʼt Know Can Hurt Them(NAPSI)—Nearly 300,000 car crashes involving inexperienceddrivers can be prevented each year with better driverʼs education,recent research shows. Teenagers often lack the essential knowl-edge and skills that can help keep them safe on the roads.

The ProblemOf the 2.2 million vehicle accidents per year, 12 percent areamong inexperienced drivers and involve tire-related issues suchas insufficient tire tread or improperly inflated tires, a number thatis nearly three times higher than with experienced drivers. Thatʼsan accident every two minutes.According to the survey commissioned by Michelin and the non-profit FIA, the governing body for world motor sport, less thanhalf of teens and their parents believe their driverʼs educationprogram completely prepared the teens to drive. Only 16 statesrequire tire safety information as part of driverʼs education, whileonly seven include tire safety information and require classroomtime devoted to vehicle maintenance and tire safety.Perhaps as a result, 27 percent of teens never check the condi-tion of their tires; less than half check their tires monthly (the rec-ommended frequency); and nearly three-quarters said theirparents taught them about tire maintenance, although onlyaround a third of parents consider themselves to be extremelyknowledgeable about tire maintenance.

A SolutionYoung drivers can take two easy, quick steps to help them avoidan accident. Tires are the only parts of a car that touch the road,so it makes sense that driving safety begins with tire mainte-nance.Thatʼs why you should check the tread by putting a penny in it
