THREE EASY STEPS TO CREATING THEOUTDOOR SPACE OF YOUR DREAMS

(NAPSI)—Thereʼs no better time than now to make the most outof your outdoor living space before the cool months arrive. Cre-ating an outdoor haven is easier to achieve than you think thanksto a few expert tips. These simple steps will not only extend thelife of your deck, but also make it the talk of the neighborhood forthe rest of the summer and beyond.

1. Deck-spiration: Before tackling the transformation, think abouthow you plan to utilize your outdoor living space. Will you bemostly cooking, dining and entertaining al fresco? Or will yourdeck be a haven to unwind and relax? Maybe it will be a combi-nation of both? No matter what you dream up, itʼs best to pull ref-erences from magazines, DIY blogs, or even Pinterest to helpguide your inspiration process.

2. Time to Beautify: Tough weather elements such as direct sun-light, rain, snow and everyday wear can dull the appearance andintegrity of your deck. One of the best ways to liven up your out-door space is with a fresh coat of beautiful, color-rich exteriorwood stain. When choosing your wood stain or sealant, considera product that also includes waterproofing and UV damage pro-tection benefits like Thompsonʼs WaterSealʼs new PenetratingTimber Oil. This premium product nourishes and beautifies witha unique triple blend of fast-absorbing oils designed to providecoverage with just one coat.

3. Deck-orate & Enjoy: Once the stain or sealant has been ap-plied, itʼs time to furnish and personalize your deck with acces-sories that are functional and design friendly. Select comfortableand eye-catching amenities that are dual purpose, such as wickerpieces or end tables that can double as pull-up seating. Accentpillows are an easy way to add a pop of color and personality toan otherwise neutral space. If your deck is in direct sunlight, con-sider blocking the blazing rays by creating a shady oasis with anall-weather fabric umbrella or sunshade in a fun, stylish pattern.

Lastly, dress up the stairs or entryway of your deck by lining theedges with wood planters in various sizes filled with flowers, freshherbs or other garden fare in vibrant colors and textures to addvisual interest. HGTV/DIY Network star Jeff Wilson recommendssealing planter boxes with Thompsonʼs WaterSeal WaterproofingWood Protector—Clear Aerosol to help maintain woodʼs naturalcolor and protect your pieces from water damage.

Comfort and visual appeal are equal partners with deck-orating;youʼre more likely to spend time outdoors if you can relax, enter-tain and dine in style. No matter what outdoor activities appealto you most, the Thompsonʼs WaterSeal website is a great placeto start for inspirational ideas and product application tips to makethe most of your outdoor living space this summer and for yearsto come.

Thompsonʼs WaterSeal Penetrating Timber Oil and ThompsonʼsWaterSeal Waterproofing Wood Protector—Clear Aerosol aresold nationwide at The Home Depot.

Thompsonʼs WaterSeal Penetrating Timber Oil is available in fivecolors: Natural, Pecan, Walnut, Redwood and Teak.

Fighting Fleas And Ticks Now And For The Future(NAPSI)—Many homeowners and pet owners may be surprised to learn that when it comes to fleas and ticks, beatingthose pests can be a year-round job.Even when the weather cools, you still need to be hot on their trail, inside and outside your home. Itʼs wise to keepticks and fleas away from your family, furniture and furry friends before they can transmit dangerous diseases to petsand people. Here are tips on how:What To Look ForSigns your pet may have fleas can include flea dirt (small dark flakes), excessive itching or scratching, redness andinflammation, hot spots and pale gums.Adult ticks are also often visible to the naked eye, so you may spot them on short-haired animals. But with longer-haired ones, itʼs best to do a thorough inspection with a flea and tick comb. Why You ShouldAmong the diseases that fleas and ticks can cause are Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, he-patozoonosis and anaplasmosis, as well as allergic reactions, such as flea allergy dermatitis. What To DoThere are five simple steps that should prove effective.1. Prevention includes regular vet visits for your pet and applying a monthly flea and tick topical treatment2. If you ever see any fleas or ticks on your animal, use a special pesticide shampoo right away.3. Often, when you see fleas on your pets, theyʼre already in your environment as well. To show them theyʼre not wel-come in your home, first, thoroughly vacuum all carpeting, upholstered furniture, drapes, along baseboards, under fur-niture and in closets. Seal the vacuum bag and dispose of it in outdoor trash. Mop hard-surface floors.4. Then, spray the carpet and furniture with a flea and tick fighter. One new product, PetArmor Home Household Spray, has a unique dual-action water-based formula with deodorizing technology that kills fleas and ticks, and flea eggs andlarvae for seven months. It also eliminates odors in pet bedding, carpet, rugs, upholstered furniture and other areasfrequented by pets while combating roaches, ants, spiders, lice, crickets, centipedes, water bugs, silverfish and sowbugs. You can use this spray on furniture, carpets, mattresses and just about any infested areas including pet beds andresting quarters, nearby cracks and crevices, along and behind baseboards, window- and doorsills, and localized areasof floor and floor covering where fleas, ticks and lice may be present.5. To further protect your place and find and kill fleas hidden in carpets, rugs, draperies, upholstery, pet bedding andfloor cracks, thereʼs PetArmor Home and Carpet Spray. It, too, will continue to kill flea eggs, larvae and pupae for upto seven months after application, breaking the flea cycle, and also kills adult fleas. It also works on ticks, bedbugs, lice and dust mites. Thereʼs no objectionable odor or sticky mess and, when used asdirected, it wonʼt stain furnishings.Where To Learn More For further facts and tips, call (888) 908-TICK (8425) or visit www.petarmor.com.

HIGH TECH CAN MAKE DRIVING SAFER(NAPSI)—More than 420,000 people are injured each year in motor vehicle accidents involvingdistracted drivers—but technology can help reduce your risk by improving your awareness behindthe wheel, no matter how old your vehicle may be.Safe SolutionsSafe driving starts with smart decisions. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) firmly be-lieves safety is paramount in a moving vehicle, and a driverʼs highest priority must be maintainingsafe control at all times. Thatʼs why CEA supports legislation that bans texting while driving andplaces strict limits on the use of electronics by novice drivers. CEA also developed the InnovatingSafety campaign to help consumers and improve awareness and understanding of the broad spec-trum of safety-enhancing technologies available today.Distraction Behind the WheelAll kinds of things can distract you when youʼre driving—using your phone, daydreaming, talking toyour passengers or paying attention to anything other than the road ahead. Statistically speaking, newer drivers are over-represented in fatality and injury crash statistics, and studies have foundthat teens are more prone to dangerous distractions while driving.Innovation Can Improve Drive SafetyFor parents wondering what they can do to improve their teenagersʼ driving habits, there are allkinds of products available to help. Some products limit cell phone usage and texting abilities andcreate incentives for good driving behavior. Other devices connect you to your car, even whenyouʼre not in it, letting parents access information on their teensʼ driving habits, set “safety zones”and monitor vehicle location.More advanced driver-monitoring solutions track the driverʼs eye movements and whether thedriverʼs hands are on the wheel. This technology can then initiate corrective action when the driverʼsbehavior appears to match that of a distracted person. Other high-tech safety products include blindspot indicators, backup cameras and crash avoidance systems that help drivers increase theirawareness of other cars, pedestrians and dangerous obstructions. Additionally, voice-activatedGPS navigational systems enhance situational awareness.New-Car Tech For Your Old-Tech CarThe primary vehicles for most American drivers are more than 11 years old. Fortunately, many tech-nology companies are developing a broad range of aftermarket devices that can be installed seam-lessly in most cars to enhance the safety. For expert advice on solutions and installation for your vehicle, look for retailers whose installerscarry the CEA Mobile Electronics Certified Professionals (MECP) certification. There are more than3,500 MECP installers in the U.S. These experts have the training to ensure you pick the right so-lution and the skill to install it correctly. After all, smart driving starts with smart decisions.Learn MoreDiscover more safe solutions and find out how to get involved in this issue at www.CE.org/Innovat-ingSafety.
