Foreword

This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support Mathematics 6. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of additional

learning resources can be found on the Ministry of Education website.

(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. Resources evaluated and recommended as support for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol curriculum frameworks and Saskatchewan’s provincial curricula have the designation (WNCP) before the annotation.

Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support Mathematics 6. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Educators should choose these materials in accordance with the school division’s learning resources selection policy.

Pricing of the learning resources contained in this list is subject to change without notice.

Manipulatives are an essential component of an effective mathematics program, leading to the development of deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Included are charts outlining the types of manipulatives needed, the suggested uses, and the suggested quantity recommended (where appropriate). Some manipulatives may be collected; others may be constructed; and many may be purchased. The main distributors for these materials are Exclusive Educational Products at www.exclusiveeducational.ca and Spectrum Nasco Educational Supplies Ltd. at www.spectrumed.com. Please consult these companies’ catalogues for purchasing information.

The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators.

This series was developed in partnership with the Yup’ik Inuit Elders in Alaska and with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. It provides an authentic example of ways to integrate First Nations, Métis and Inuit content, to incorporate cultural ways of knowing, and to bridge gaps between different ways of knowing and understanding. The series includes cultural stories given by Elders.

Note: Imperial measurements, along with some metric measurements, are used. Also, the term “Eskimo” appears instead of “Inuit” which is the culturally appropriate term in Canada. Teachers are encouraged to use and adapt the materials as needed to support Saskatchewan’s mathematics curriculum.

Math in a Cultural Context Series: Lessons Learned from Yup’ik Eskimo EldersAuthors: Adams, Barbara L., Kagle, Melissa, George, Frederick, and Lipka, Jerry

Annotation(CORE) Modules in the Math in a Cultural Context Series: Lessons learned from Yup’ik Eskimo Elders provide an example of how to explore the multiculturalism of mathematics.

In Star Navigation: Explorations into Angles and Measurement students develop their navigation skills as they observe the patterns of the Sun related to time and location. After investigating properties of angles, students apply their knowledge to navigating situations. As daytime navigating creates a simplified problem, most of the module develops foundational thinking in this framework. As students become skilled with daytime navigating, they learn Frederick’s methods for night time navigating. Using the constellations, students extend their daytime methods, which focus on two-dimensional measures, to the night time situation, which uses three-dimensional measures.

Salmon Fishing: Investigations Into Probability offers the perspectives of a Yup’ik subsistence fisher. Knowledge of the salmon’s life cycle, how to fish, and where to fish determine the probabilty of catching fish. This module embeds Yup’ik cultural values, and introduces Yup’ik games of chance to further explore concepts of probability and fairness.

Nelson Math Focus 6Author: Small, Marion

Annotation(CORE, CAN, WNCP) This resource includes a student book and a teacher resource. Each chapter in the teacher’s resource contains a table of contents, mathematical overview, teaching ideas to consider, including suggestions for differentiating instruction, and planning guides. “Planning for the Chapter“ outlines the lessons, activities, learning goals, materials, and assessment. For each lesson, the learning goals and mathematical processes are identified. A lesson is divided into three sections: “Getting Started“, “Working It Out“, and “Reflect & Connect“. There are suggestions for feedback to students including what to look for and what to do, a chapter task, and a “Keep Going“ section with a connection to literature. Also included are a family letter, illustrated blackline masters for the lesson, a task rubric, a chapter interview template, an interview recording template, a checklist template, an assessment of learning summary template, and pictures of the student book with sample answers.

Pearson Math Makes Sense 6. WNCP Ed.Author: Wyman, Diane

Annotation(CORE, WNCP, CAN) This resource consists of a student text and a teacher resource. The teacher resource consists of eight unit booklets, blackline masters, an overview, and a planning and assessment booklet. Each unit in the teacher resource contains mathematical background, curriculum across the grades, curriculum overview, planning for instruction, suggested time frame, and planning for assessment. Each lesson provides a curriculum focus, mathematical word wall suggestions, materials, and program resources. There is an assessment for learning section that accesses prior knowledge and a “What to do“ at the end of each lesson. The student resource includes literature selections, practice pages, letters to parents, and tear-out “Math at Home“ pages. This resource identifies a “Math Focus“ (goals) and “Home Connection“ (ways to help at home) for each lesson.

The Van de Walle Professional Mathematics SeriesAuthors: Van de Walle, John A. and Lovin, Louann H.

Annotation(CORE) These teacher references promote the use of problem-based activities to develop students’ conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. The resources emphasize the idea that math makes sense. The opening chapters outline the foundations for student-centred instruction, and serve as the underpinning for all other chapters. The resources highlight the need for ongoing assessment that is integrated with instructional planning. Numerous practical examples of problem-based activities, assessment notes, and ideas for integrating technology into instruction are included. Readers are encouraged to reflect on various concepts presented throughout the resources.

A CD-ROM accompanies the titles, providing an electronic version of the books with additional tips and video clips to illustrate various concepts. A supporting website is also available.
