principal’s chatterDear Mums, Dads and Carers
We are putting together the challenge to all of our families for a $10 voluntary donation to this project.
Construction of our multi-purpose hall is steaming ahead. Painting is about to commence and soon after, the sound system and AV will be installed for the performing arts. We have selected an excellent system that will serve us well for many years. But like all quality items, there is a significant cost.
We need just over $8000 to pay for the mixer and other equipment. We are putting out the challenge to all of our families for a $10 donation to this project. More if you can afford it. All donations are completely tax deductible.
Donations can be made in person by dropping them into the school office in an envelope. (Make sure your details are clearly marked on the front of the envelope) or direct deposit to the P&C Building Fund Bank Account

Congratulations to every one of the 24 Year 6 applicants who sought to become a student leader this year. Congratulations to:
Head of School ..........................Aliya Gulum
Head of Student Council ...........Jessica Jarvis
Head of Colman House .............Jenaya Milford
Head of Foxwell House .............Tyson Drew
Head of Pedley House ...............Amelia Lees
In the next few days these leaders will be starting the student council meetings and activities, attending the leadership ceremony at Pimpama State Secondary College and preparing for the first house competition, the school cross-country.
We also announced our student council representatives this week. Congratulations to the following 15 students on their election:

Great Results Guarantee
I will be discussing the guarantee with families on Monday morning following assembly. Please contact Caryn if you would like to register your place at this meeting. It will start after junior assembly and run for about an hour. You will learn about the goals and strategies that we will be implementing to improve student outcomes.
I will write about the guarantee in Issue 6 but those who attend the meeting will be the first to know.
Mathletics
Congratulations to all of the students who have beaten my challenge for three weeks running. Their reward of course is an icy-pole each. So far I have needed to purchase 2700 of them! Money well spent though. My new target is an enormous challenge. 600 bronze certificates! I am finally feeling pretty confident!
Kind regards
Vic

house keepingImportant change to traffic conditions near our school
As a community we completely understand the inconvenience that development can temporarily cause while we know the final outcome will be great. When the school first opened, the top end of Finnegan Way was little more than a potholed narrow strip of old bitumen. There was no pedestrian access whatsoever. In another seven weeks we will have an excellent road linking Finnegan to Foxwell Road.
It will be the next seven weeks though that will challenge our patience and resolve. The P&C Association has been in continual communication with our local council regarding strategies to improve congestion and conditions with the current detour.. While we cannot dictate an outcome, we are certainly working with Council to improve the next few weeks.
We are recommending to families to consider:
• ...Using other routes, such as Amity Road as an alternative.
• ...Leaving home earlier to account for the hold up
• ...Car pooling
• ...Walking or riding to school if you live close enough
Music class on-line
The Coomera Rivers Music Edstudio is here! You will find all things to do with music on this site. Choir students will be able to access their pieces and backing tracks to rehearse at home. There will be classroom songs and games for each year level. You will also find our music notices and performance dates on here as well.

Road safety
I have been informed by the council and Coomera Police that our school traffic area is a hot spot for congestion, parking and safety. As a result they intend to visit regularly to ensure that motorists are doing the right thing. Nobody wants you to receive a fine but of course, we place student safety above all else. If you are caught infringing the road and traffic rules you will more than likely receive a fine.
Ride to school day (March 21)
We are putting the finishing touches on our ride to school day but we need help to ensure that our children are able to ride safely. We are waiting for confirmation from the council and Coomera Police to assist us with traffic control. Once all is in order we will need you to register your children. Stay tuned!
Years 4-6 Gala Sports Day
Our interschool sports starts next Tuesday (March 4) and involves students in Years 4-6. We are all travelling to the Coomera Soccer and Netball clubs on Dreamworld Parkway, Coomera. The teams are ready for fun, fitness and friendship.

With last week’s Matheltics certificate total reaching a whopping 501 a new benchmark was needed yet again!! Mr Graham rewarded classes with icy-poles and gave the challenge of 525 certificates. He thought he’d be safe with this benchmark but students once again met the challenge. Our Week 4 total once again saw a new record being made. A load roar erupted as I read out our new record of 548!!! Congratulations to those 548 students who gained their certificates. Poor Mr Graham needed a tissue as he sadly learned he needed to take another trip to the shops to buy another 1000 icy-poles. Mr Graham wasn’t the only one who needed a tissue. Poor Mr Sproule this week learned that his winning streak was OVER. I wonder for how long though.

PREP
Our Mathletics expectation for our Prep students is that they complete their 3 assigned tasks for the week. Each Sunday night I’ll go on to Mathletics to see how many students in Prep have accessed Mathletics. However our preps
are proving they’re better than this expectation and we saw 52 prep students gain their 1000 point certificate The winning class had 23 students access Mathletics which is an impressive 100% of the class. AND THE WINNER?
PREP K – Mrs Walsh
On Monday’s assemblies we recognised 7 students who gained their Mathletics Gold certificates
Congratulations on gaining your Gold Certificate:

The most common strategy for working out the 4s facts is to double the number being multiplied by 4, then double it again.•For 6 x 4, think ‘double 6 (12) then double it again (24)’. •For 3 x 4, think ‘double 3 (6) then double it again (12)’.
It is also important that students are competent in extending the doubles strategy to multiples of 10, to help them work out facts involving 2-digit numbers multiplied by 4. For example:
•For 12 x 4, think ‘double 10 add double 2 (20 + 4) then double it again (40 + 8)’.

rucsac - problem solving
This week we look at the strategy, ‘Act it out’. Act it out is similar to ‘Draw a Picture’ as helps to visualise or see the problem to help find the solution. Acting it out can involve using people and objects.Students can use objects such as counters, blocks, pencils or toothpicks to represent people or places in the problem. These objects can be moved around as they move through the problem. It can also be useful to act out the roles of the different people/animals/things in the problem.
Using the acronym RUCSAC helps students systematically work out word problems. As a school, we are currently in the process of explicitly teaching our students a toolbox of strategies in which they can answer problems. Interested in finding out how you can help at home?
Email your answers, along with your working out to Mrs Artz ([email protected]) REMEMBER: You MUST show your working out - Remember you MUST show your

There are 40 children attending the Coomera Rivers Teddy Bear’s picnic. Mr Graham needs to make each child a sandwich and needs to work out how many loaves of bread to buy. He needs two slices for each sandwich. If a loaf of bread has 16 slices (it’s thick bread), how many loaves does Mr Graham need to buy? (HINT: Use counters to show the slices of bread and place in piles to show a loaf)
Year 3 & 4
There are 6 people in line in the supermarket. Each person has double the number of grocery items as the person in front of them. If the first person has only 1 item, how many items do all the customers buy altogether? (Use containers for the people and blocks/counters to represent the grocery items)
Year 5 & 6This staircase with 3 steps is made up of 6 blocks. If I had 36 blocks just like these to build a staircase, then how many steps would I have? (Try using blocks to help you work it out)

Did you know we have a school app? We do and you can access it for free from the app store. Created in 2012, it is a great way to keep up to date with the school website, especially the calendar of events, the Principal’s Blog and even newsletters.
Visit: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/coomera-rivers-state-school/id511605873?mt=8 and follow the usual procedures
Education Queensland has also just released an app called Q Schools.
You can obtain it at

p&c informationCoomera Rivers Disco!
Friday the 14th of March will be this years first disco!
The cost is $10 per child and includes entry, sausage sizzle, soft drink / water, and a glow bracelet on entry.
The Junior Disco will be held from 5pm until 6.30pm and is for children in Prep to year 2.
The Senior Disco will start at 6.30pm and finish at 8pm and is for grades 3 to 6.
Senior students will not be able to attend the Junior disco and junior students will not be able to attend the senior disco. This applies even to siblings that may have one in junior and one in senior.
Remember children must be signed in by a parent– even if you are intending on staying with them - and signed out when leaving.
When purchasing tickets we ask that you purchase the ticket through the Flexischools account of each child attending. This means if you have more than one child you will need to purchase one is each child’s name and not multiple tickets under one child’s name.
Tickets are available exclusively through Flexischools and tickets close on Thursday the 13th of March at 9am. Unfortunately no tickets will be available after this time.
On the day of the disco your child will be sent home with their disco ticket. Want express entry into the disco and not have to wait in line? Simply fill out the details on the ticket before arriving and once the gate open you will be in the express line!
Pre-school aged children are very welcome to come along free of charge however they must be accompanied by their parents and remain with their parent at all times.
Their will be food, drinks, face painting and glow products available to purchase on the night – a full list of items and prices will be available closer to the date.
The disco is always a great night and we look forward to seeing you there!
Pre-Loved Uniform Shop to go completely online!
The Pre-Loved Uniform Shop (PLUS) will no longer open on a Wednesday morning.
All purchases from the PLUS will be done online via Flexischools.
If you wish to sell your uniforms to the PLUS you will simply need to take them to Corporate Services, fill out the Sale Request Form and we will review and process the uniforms within 3 school days.
These changes have been made based on extremely low
purchases from and sales to the PLUS being made in person during the opening times. Since taking the PLUS online at the start of Term 4 2013 the need for the shop to open has decreased dramatically.
If you have any questions please email us at [email protected]
School Banking – NO TOKENS!
This year the CBA introduced a new online tracking process that now tells us when a student has made 10 deposits and has earnt a reward.
When this milestone is reached the School Banking Team will send home a note and order form for the student to select their prize.
You then simply return the completed form with your next banking and the ladies will place your prize order. Prizes will then be delivered to your child when they arrive – this normally takes about 2 weeks.
If you have any questions around this please feel free to contact us at [email protected]

volunteer voiceWelcome to all the new volunteers I have met over the past two weeks. The number of volunteers in my little database has jumped from 53 at the beginning of the year to over 100 and that is amazing! So a big thank you to those that have signed up, and attended a volunteer induction. Please keep checking the “sign up” tab for new volunteer areas that are being added regularly to see if you can help.
Blue Card Information
As mentioned in the volunteer inductions, parents of students volunteering in the school are not required to obtain a Blue Card. However, while you are volunteering at the school the Blue Card is free and handy to have. If you would like to apply for your Blue Card I have listed the link for the application form. You will need to print this form, as online applications are not accepted.
http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/pdf/bluecard/forms/13-849-052-Blue-card-(BC)_MAY13.pdf
By the time the Volunteer Voice goes to print, I might not know the correct procedure once the application is completed. I will advise this in the next newsletter and via email through the volunteer webpage.
Using the iPad in Corporate Services
When volunteering at the school you will need to sign in using the iPad. This is very important. In case of an emergency the school will need to know who is on the grounds at any time. So here is a rundown on how to use the iPad.
• Push the home button to power up the iPad
• Push the “sign in” button
• Enter your first name and last name.
• Click in the space provided for your email address and wait a second or two. If you have previously signed in on the ipad it may remember your details from last time. If nothing happens enter your email address.
• Type where you are volunteering in the “volunteering in” area ie Prep D or 2M or Banking etc. This is for volunteers; visitors and teachers use the other two options.
• Once you click done, a pop up about the schools terms will appear. Please take the time to read this.
• Once you agree to the terms, a
signature box will appear. Please sign.
• And lastly, the photo!
• Signing out, click on the sign out button and enter your name. A box will appear confirming you are signing out, click ok.
Volunteer badges need to be worn around the school, and are located next to the iPad. Please take one when signing in and put one back when signing out.
We wish to advise that the Annual General Mee+ng of the Coomera
Rivers State School P&C will be held on Tuesday the 18th of March at 6pm in Corporate Services.
Applica;ons for 2013 P&C Membership and Nomina;ons forms for Execu;ve
posi;ons are available at Corporate Services or on the night.
