Losing a best friend and a loverDEAR Joe,I’m Rupert and a collegestudent from a universityin the u-belt . My bestfriend Noli has a wonder-ful wife named Lara.
It all started when Noli’s jobcalled for him to be away for lessthan two months so he told me towatch over his wife and his kid. When I said yes to him, I had thisstrange feeling for some reason.
Joe, during that time, I wasbeginning to like his wife and Iwas afraid that his absencewould make it worst. While No-li was abroad my girlfriend andI incidentally broke up. I had acouple of drinks one time andguess who was there to comfortme? Yes it was Lara.
Noli heard about the breakup thing and he knew that wewere drinking with some closefriends. Lara was drinking overNoli and I was drinking over myex. I was her shoulder to cry onand vice versa. One night whenshe got drunk, we kissed. Thatwas the start of the affair thatchanged my whole life.
Joe, we agreed that when Nolicomes back, it would be over. Wedid what we’re not supposed todo over and over until Noli camefrom abroad. When Noli wasback in the country, I tried tobreak it up with Lara but she washesitant. She was caught betweentwo people she loved. I couldn’tbreak up either because I was soemotionally attached to her.
Joe, Noli was so kind to meand treats me like a real broth-er. I can’t look at him straight inthe eye because of the guilt thatI keep inside me. We kept ourrelationship hidden for almosttwo years until one evening, when Lara decided to drink forno reason when Noli was al-ready sleeping. I came over andthere the unexpected happened.
Noli caught us caressingeach other. But instead of hit-ting me, he just told me to stepout of his house. Lara wantedto leave Noli but I came to mysenses and finally decided toleave and never look back.
Joe, their marriage almost gotruined because of our affair. ButI heard that Noli has forgivenLara and they are still together.
I’m happy for them, Joe, andI admire Noli for his angelickindness. Because if it hap-pened to another man, the out-come could have been fatal.
Joe, I lost a best friend and alover. I still feel guilty for whathappened. I can’t do anythingbut accept being labeled as ahome wrecker. So many ques-tions are still left unanswered, does Lara still love me? Did thataffair make me less of a manbecause I gave in to the tempta-tion? Why is it that every time Itry a new relationship it fails?
Please help me, Joe. It’s beena year and a half since we part-ed but her thoughts are stillhaunting me. Joe, thanks fortaking time in reading my lettermore power to Love Notes .
Sincerely yours,Rupert
DEAR Rupert,Honestly, being temptedinto an affair with Laradidn’t make you less of aman. It was betrayingyour bestfriend that madeyou less of what you are.
Asking yourself if Lara stillloves you means that you arestill carrying an emotional bag-gage that you should have leftbehind a year and a half ago. This could probably be the rea-son why you fail in the relation-ships that you tried to get into.
Rupert, some of us miserablyfall into the lure of consensual il-licit affairs, because most of thetime we resist to look at the biggerpicture just to satisfy ourselves.
Having an affair with yourbestfriend’s wife clearly shows
that you were just there to enjoywhat you wanted without anyconsideration on the trust withwhich you and Noli have builtyour friendship upon. You havetaken advantage of the vulnera-bility of Lara in the absence of herhusband to suit your own desires.
You were able to succeed andeven made her want you morethan Noli but at what price— theloss of your friendship and the guiltthat is still haunting you until now.
Rupert, the only way to findpeace is to ask for forgiveness andlearning to forgive yourself. Weall make mistakes and hurt otherpeople. But at the end of the day,the person who acknowledges hisfaults and asks for absolution isthe one who is able to move onand reconcile with his conscience.
Rupert, remember that every-time you think of how Lara feelsfor you, you are actually reopen-ing that book which should havebeen closed and burned a longtime ago. Let your best friendand his wife live in peace. That isthe least that you could do tomake up for all the pain that youhave caused them.
May we all realize that it isnot the mistake that Lara or Ru-pert has committed that makesthis story. The real lesson here isthe lesson of love that Noli hasfaithfully and consistently showed.
Love does not seek revenge, nordoes it keep a record of the wrongthat we have done. Love is alwayskind. And most of all, love is al-ways forgiving. No matter howdeeply we have been hurt by thepeople around us, love will alwaysbe able to accept and forgive.
This is the greatest power oflove. And this is what should givehope to all of us who have hurtand have been hurt by others be-cause of love.
