MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Roketsan July 20174

Dear Readers,

IDEF 2017 Fair, in which Turkish Defence Industry was displayed with all its glory, reminded the whole world the strength of our potential.Like everybody else who felt the atmosphere of the Fair we too got our hopes up for our future and as Roketsan, we have been proud to beone of the architects of this future.

Besides representing the position a country has reached in terms of technology, the defence industry is one of the most important indicatorsof economic and political balances. Each ability that is developed and each product that is independently produced is a direct added value tothe country’s development. In the light of our national values, we work devotedly to provide this added value. Our belief that 2017 would bea year of advance for us was not misguided and in the first half of the year we already achieved many firsts. Recently, we came to an end inthe integration of Laser Guided Long Range Anti-Tank Missile L-UMTAS, developed by Roketsan, into our national aircraft HÜRKUŞ.While the conformity of our national abilities is considerably important for the advancement of our defence industry, we were glad with thesuccess achieved when L-UMTAS was launched from HÜRKUŞ for the first time in Konya-Karapınar. The successfully performed test firingof the KHAN Missile was broadcast live during IDEF Fair and we all witnessed the level we have reached in missile technologies.

In equipping the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) with advanced technology products, which is our national priority, we serve our people throughour projects we developed and produced by using Roketsan’s own resources. In addition to our intensive R&D efforts and our cooperationwith universities, the investments we made in our workforce and our infrastructure carry us further than creating the technology that isalready available and bring us to a position to develop technology of the future.

We will continue our efforts to ensure that our country acquires technological achievements in advance of our times and to make sure thatthese achievements will provide commercial benefits.

Sincerely Yours,

Emin ALPMANChairman of the Board

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

July 2017 Roketsan 5

Dear Readers,

We are in a bright period in which our country’s achievements in the defence industry rapidly increase and the whole world’s eyes are fixedon our national products. With our broad vision, dynamic and innovative workforce and our range of products serving various needs; we are

proud to be a stakeholder of this development.

As Roketsan, each year we participate in important fairs and display our advanced technology products and abilities around the world. Atthe 13th IDEF Fair, which we hosted as Turkish defence industry companies, we welcomed our guests. Products such as the KHAN Missile,

the MAM-C Smart Micro Munition, the TRG-122 Missile and the TRG-300 TIGER Missile that were displayed for the first time at the Fairas well as other products and abilities attracted considerable attention. Test firing of the Surface to Surface Artillery Missile KHAN that

took place in Sinop was broadcast live during the IDEF Fair. It greatly honoured all of us to share this national excitement, which resultedwith success.

The Laser Guided Long Range Anti-Tank Missile L-UMTAS was launched for the first time by the national aircraft HÜRKUŞ within thescope of the “HÜRKUŞ Aircraft L-UMTAS Missile Firing Demonstration” activities, a project which was started by the Undersecretariat

for Defence Industries (SSM) and developed by TAI. While primarily designed for anti-tank missions with the use of different warheads theL-UMTAS can also be used for close air support, border security and operations requiring pinpoint accuracy. With the integration of the

L-UMTAS Missile into our national aircraft HÜRKUŞ, Turkey has become one of the few countries that can launch its own missile from itsown aircraft. Thus, we achieved both a first and our country acquired an important deterrent ability.

As a result of our efforts in developing a national product our turnover exceeded one billion Turkish lira in 2016 with a 40 percent increaseon 2015, up from 760 million lira. In the “ISO 500” research, in which 500 big industry organisations are ranked by the Istanbul Chamber

of Commerce, we ranked 89th, going up 38 places in the rankings when compared to last year.

Works that will shape our future are formed over the strong foundations which were laid years ago. Our corporate culture, workforce, ourfaith in continuous improvement and training play an important role in our success. I’d like to take this opportunity to announce that in

parallel with our collaboration with Sabancı University, we will establish the Roketsan Academy.

I extend my deepest respect on behalf of the Roketsan family who continue to work diligently to contribute to the bright future of ourcountry.

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Roketsan July 20176

Dear Readers,

In the previous period, we left behind the IDEF Fair that we awaited with long preparations. In the Fair that welcomedcompanies and representatives from 50 different countries and senior level delegations from 67 countries we greatly enjoyedwelcoming our guests with the excitement of being one of the hosts.

Our Laser Guided Long Range Anti-Tank Missile L-UMTAS launched from our national aircraft HÜRKUŞ and hit its targetfor the first time. We also successfully completed the testing of our Surface to Surface Artillery Missile KHAN. Thesesuccessful firings were important milestones for our country. While our products that were displayed for the first time atinternational fairs we participated in were covered frequently in national and foreign press, we have also found the opportunityto tell the people who need it at different points in the world of the high technology we have achieved with our products andabilities.

We frequently came together with our solution partners and our supplier companies and shared our opinions. Knowing that thebiggest investment in our future is investing in our youth, we came together with young people and supported their projectsshedding light on our future.

This issue, in which we continue to share interesting articles that our employees have prepared in their own fields, include newsregarding awards we won and articles about us.

Each achieved success is not an end. On the contrary, they are new beginnings for better achievements. We continue to workundauntedly to go beyond the point we have reached.

Kind Regards,

The Editorial Board

T he efforts for the “122 mm GuidedMIZRAK Rocket” (TRG-122,Figure 1), one of Roketsan’s

technology development projects basedon its own resources, began in 2016 andthe verification process was completedwith an innovative design approachwhich emphasizes experimentalitystarting from the early stages of thedesign and considerably shortening theprocess by ensuring that problems areidentified in the first stages of design. With this approach that increases theefficiency in system design efforts, verification tests began and theexpectations of the firing performanceachieved after flight tests wereexceeded.

Guided Rocket

122 mm calibre artillery rocket systemswith varying ranges are used in manycountries. The TR-122 with a 122 mmexplosive warhead and the TRB-122Missile with a steel ball warheadmanufactured by Roketsan entered theinventory of the TAF as of 1996.Currently, Roketsan’s 122 mm rocketscontinue to be used by the TAF andsome other countries’ Armed Forces(Figure 2).

In addition to free flight rockets, the useof guided missile systems are alsopreferred. Due to this demand, the

importance of low cost rockets with aguidance ability has increased.Guidance kit development efforts forartillery rockets with differentdiameters are intensively carried out byleading defence industry companies. Inorder to come up with a quick responseto the requirement in question, in 2016a development effort for a 122 mmGuided Rocket has been started byRoketsan.

used for destruction of a selectedpoint/target has been determined in theevent that the missile has gainedpinpoint strike capability. Based on this,it has been evaluated that if a costeffective missile design is made, aproduct that can be preferred bypotential users can be put forward.Later on, guidance methods andalternative design configurations thatcan be used on the system wereexamined. After making comparisonsamong alternative solutions, integratingthe spin stabilized GNSS (GlobalNavigation Satellite System) supportedguidance method that includesadvantages such as cost, efficiency, small volume, low weight and pinpointaccuracy into the available 122 mmrockets with a guidance kit isconsidered to be the most appropriateoption. Spin prediction is performedthrough sensors used in guidancestructure developed by making use ofspin stabilisation and the target pointcan be hit with metric precision throughcontrol commands generated with asingle DC motor and two fins (Figure 3).According to constructed architectureeven if the guidance function cannot beperformed for any reason, theammunition can follow the ballistictrajectory and reach to its target with astandard rocket like performance.

After determining the system leveldesign configuration and architecture, subsystem development efforts began. The preliminary design was completedin a short period of six months bysticking to the system design processeswith the vigorous efforts of the projectemployees.

Recent Activities

In parallel with activities carried out formissile qualifications, efforts concerningdetermining the system utilisationconcepts and acquiring a highly efficientsystem have continued. For theintegration of different utilisationconcepts, such as a single missile from asteel tube and a 20-tube sealed pod(Figure 6) into all Multi Barrel RocketLauncher (MBRL) Systems, designingactivities for weapon managementcomputer and weapon subsystems arecontinuing.

In addition, development effortsregarding innovative solutions such as aside thrust control drive system, GNSSindependent guidance system and thewireless umbilical cord that the BallisticSystems Group Presidency will requirewithin the scope of its short and longterm plans, are being carried out underthe 122 mm Guided MIZRAK RocketProject.

kit integration to the spin stabilizedrocket was verified for the first time inTurkey with a flight test.

As a result of the detailed examinationof telemetry data acquired during flighttests, improvement points in subsystemdesign were determined and therequired improvements were included inthe system design in the first half of2017.

Currently, the design of all subsystemshas been completed and qualificationflight tests are planned to be completedduring 2017 pursuant to design

Based on the detailed examination ofthe results acquired with system testingand analysis work (Figure 4) and due tothe fact that all results were found to beundoubtedly successful, it was decidedthat Guided Testing Missile (GTM)firing was to be performed directlywithout performing flight tests withBTM (Ballistic Test Missile) or CTM(Controlled Test Missile) prototypes.

With the two successful GTF firing testsperformed in mid-2016 and in early2017 at the Karapınar Firing Range, the technology demonstration wascompleted. Upon this success, guidance

Pedestal Mounted CİRİT System DataCommunication Infrastructure

Developing technology and increasinguser requirements caused landplatforms to become complex systemswhere many subsystems work together. In land platform command controlapplications, quick and efficient realtime data communication is required.DDS (Data Distribution Service)technology is commonly used indistributed command control systemswhere several systems/subsystems worktogether. PMC System communicationarchitecture is based on DDSCommunication Protocol.

The benefits of using DDS as the maindata bus is given below;

• Having flexible and adaptablecommunication architecture (It isconsidered that by courtesy of thischaracteristic the time and laborrequired to integrate the alternativesof available subsystems and softwaredevelopment and testing activities willbe reduced.)

• Reliable data sharing• Efficient use of data bandwidth• Support for both multicast and

unicast communication betweensubsystems/units

It is required that the data must betransmitted to one or moresubsystems/units in real time withoutdegrading the system performance.DDS middleware is developed to meetthe data transmission needs of real timesystems, operating in distributedenvironments. Therefore in distributedand real time land platform commandcontrol applications, DDS is animportant middleware standard.

“Publish/Subscribe” mechanism makesit possible for subsystems/units in theenvironment to perform datacommunication between each otherwithout requiring a predefinedadjustment and publishes the data on adata centric basis in a way that datawill be available at the desired place at

the desired time. With the use of DDS,the subsystems/units will focus on whichdata they want to send/receive at whatfrequency rather than how they willsend and receive the data they need.

DDS middleware is data centric andeach subsystem/unit can be adjustedwith different qualitiy of service (QoS)parameters. The most important andfrequently used quality of serviceparameters are listed below;

1.Deadline: It is the quality of servicedetermining the maximum timeallowed between data instances.

2.Destination Order: It is the quality ofservice that determines in what orderthe data instances, sent from differentsubsystems, will be received.

3.Durability: It is the service qualitythat controls the data availabilitywith respect to late joiningparticipants.

4.History: It is the service quality thatdetermines how many instances of theprevious sent data will be accessiblefor the subsystems.

5.Life Span: It is the service qualitydetermining the availability time forthe data; the data with expiredavailability time cannot be accessed.

6.Ownership: It is the service qualitythat determines whether a subsystemcan receive data instances from more

than one distinct subsystem at thesame time.

7.Reliability: It is the service qualitythat determines at what level thedistribution of data to the subscribersis guaranteed.

DDS data bus access of subsystems ofPedestal Mounted CİRİT System whichhave different interfaces such as RS-232/RS-422, CAN, MIL-STD 1553 etc.is provided by system interface units. There are two system interface units inthe overall system.

System Interface Unit-1: It isresponsible from the integration ofturret, inertial navigation and sensorswitch subsystems to the DDS network.

System Interface Unit-2: It isresponsible from the integration ofElectro-Optical System, MAST andPower Distribution Unit HardwareControl units to the DDS network. Ageneric data model to be used system-wide is designed independent ofprocessor architecture.

In this way, integration problemsamong subsystems are minimized. Forinstance, a subsystem that needs tocommunicate with more than onesubsystem through different interfacescan perform data communication with

many subsystems just through the DDSinterface. In this way, saving on timeand labor is achieved in terms of systemintegration. The number of systeminterface units to be used in the systemarchitecture is determined during theinterface design. There is a trade offbetween the number of system interfaceunits available in the system and systemperformance, modularity and data flow.In this architecture system interfaceunits can be designed as generichardware components that have manycards supporting various interfaces. While the DDS data bus interface ofsystem interface units is through DDSinformation packages defined withincommon data model that will be definedfor land platforms, the other interfacesmay vary depending on the hardware. Inthis way a flexible and expendablesystem architecture based on openstandards is achieved.

Example Test Infrastructurefor DDS Based Land PlatformCommand Control Applications

The architecture that could be anexample for test infrastructure andtraining simulators in DDS based landplatform command control applicationsis given in the figure below. In the

example system, it is aimed that “TestSoftware” and “Training Simulator”will be developed by the use of commonsoftware components from a commonpool. The use of DDS middleware withinthe simulation and training simulatorsystems is technically appropriate. If aneed to add a new software item arises, the subsystem/unit simulator associatedwith the software item can be integratedwithout a need to make any changes onthe other available simulators. Thisstructure also minimizes the testingeffort. In the figure, simulation/syntheticand test DDS data bus and landplatform DDS data bus, which areshown as separate DDS data buses, areshown separate data buses in logicalsense. While DDS domain concept canbe used to form separate data buses ona single physical network; whenrequired, two physically separatenetworks can be used as well. With theability of dynamic environmentrecognition provided by the DDS;flexible, extendable testing andsimulator infrastructure is provided. Thesoftware/hardware item under test canbe easily tested in an environment whereother elements are adjusted as eitherreal or simulator/emulator whenneeded. As a result, the use of DDS inland platforms with a common data

model definition and an architecturaldesign similar to the one given in theexample;

• Provides a flexible and expendableinfrastructure in terms of platformintegration.

• Minimizes the effects of adding a newor changing an existing subsystem andthe time and effort that will be spentto integrate with the existing system.

• The software under development canbe easily developed and itscompatibility in terms of interfacescan be tested even the real subsystemswhich it will interact with does notexist.

• The reuse of common softwarecomponents from the point of testingof Command Control applications anddevelopment of training simulatorsbecomes easier and the required laborand time for development is reduced.

• Since it operates through “publish-subscribe” mechanism, therequirement of complex networkstructures is prevented.

• Through different quality of serviceadjustments data transmissioncharacteristics of each subsystem/unitcan be adjusted.

• High performance can be achieved incomplex data transmissions.

• Test and integration time isreduced•
