Goetic Theory: A Brief OverviewOne of the most frequently asked questions about the Goetia is
“WhatexactlyareGoeticspiritsanyway?”Therearetwomainschoolsofthoughtonthissubject.
Thoseoftheobjectiveschoolofthoughtbelievethatthespiritsexistexternaltothemagician,livingontheastralplane,orpossiblyeveninHell(whereverthatis).
Amorepopulartheoryisthatthe72Goeticspiritsaresubjectiveelementsoftheindividualconsciousnessresidingindormantpartsofthehumanbrain.Becausethese“spirits”ofthebrainaregenerallyun-controlled,theymaybethesourceofourownpersonaldemons.Themagician,throughtheuseoftranceandritual,activates,externalizes,andpersonifiesthesepartsofhisbraintocontrolandutilizethem.*
OthersbelievethatGoeticspiritsarebothobjectiveandsubjectiveentities,thattheyarenotonlypartsoftheindividualconsciousness,butarealsoelementsoftheCollectiveUnconscious,theimagesandexperiencessharedbytheentirehumanrace.
What is most important is that the magician believe that Goeticspiritsdoindeedexist, andthattheartofevocationisatrulyeffectivemethodofcommunicatingwith them. In theend, itdoesn’tmatterwherethespiritsoriginatefrom—ifyoucallthem, theycome.
Beforewemoveon,I’dliketomentionthatIhaveaskedafewGoet-icspiritswhere theywereorwhat theyweredoingbeforeIevokedthemintomypresence.Iftheycouldevenanswerthesequestionsatall, theyusuallysaidthattheyweresleeping.Inthissense, itseemstheydon’texist(atleastonapersonallevel)beforeyoucallthemup.
*Foramore in-depthdiscussionof thisperspective,see“TheInitiatedInterpre-tation of Ceremonial Magick”, Aleister Crowley’s introduction to the MacGregorMatherstranslationofThe Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon the King(YorkBeach,ME:SamuelWeiser,1995).SeealsoLonDuQuette’sessay“DemonsareourFriends”,published in Angels, Demons, & Gods of the New Millennium (York Beach, ME:SamuelWeiser,1997).

Goetic Evocation: Why?That’sagoodquestion.WhybotherwithGoeticevocationatall?
Ifyouwantsomething likemoneyor loveor information,whynotperformasimpleritualandletsleepingdemonslie?
First,ifyoubelievethatGoeticspiritsarepartsofyourindividualconsciousness(asdoI),thenbringingtheseunrulyspiritsundercon-trolresultsingreatercontrolofyourownconsciousness.ThispurgingandperfectionofthemindisakeyelementoftheGreatWork.
Second, Goetic spirits are intelligent; they can work independentlyandcantacklecomplicatedtasksthatmaybedifficulttoaccomplishbyothermeans.Itisbecauseofthisthattheyareoftenusedassourcesforinformation,andasaresultmanyoftheirservicesareinforma-tion-oriented.
Third, the interactiveelementsofGoeticevocationareappealingtomanymagicians.Forexample,whenotherformsofmagickfailtomanifestthedesiredresults,themagicianhaslittlerecoursebuttogobacktothedrawingboard.ButifaGoeticspiritfailstocarryouthischarge,thenyoucancallhimupagainandfindoutwhattheproblemwasorevenpunishhimforslacking!
