Lauren Caruso, one of Parkwood Green’s grade 6 students
recently competed in the Victorian Track and Field State
Championships at Olympic Park in Melbourne. Lauren won 3
gold medals for her efforts in Triple Jump, 80m hurdles and
the 400m events and a bronze medal in the Long Jump event
for her age group. Lauren has now been selected to
represent Australia in the Pan Pacific Games held in
November this year. We wish you all the best in November
Lauren.
Her younger sister Emily is also following in her sister’s
footsteps as she participated for the first time at the
championships and managed to win a silver medal in shot put
for her age group. Well done Emily on such an achievement
for your first go at State Championship level.
Congratulations on a fantastic effort Lauren and Emily.

KITA PERFORMING ARTS This term the Grade 5s have been learning about many
different aspects of ASIA.
Last week the KITA (Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and
Australia) performing company came out to our school
and performed many different cultural dances from
ASIA including Kung Fu and Tai Chi to Tae Kwon
Dance and Hip Hop Funk.
The incursion was conducted in the new BER building
and was a very hands on experience. The students
thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS Each year Parkwood Green has a number of pre-service teachers from various universities completing placements within the classrooms. Throughout 2011, our school has been allocated a high number of pre-service teachers who are currently studying education courses. Many students and parents are familiar with our pre-service teachers, as they do a fantastic job to assist within the classroom and with extracurricular activities. Pre-service teachers are welcomed into our school as members of the community, however, are not a replacement for the classroom teacher. Please continue to support them in their teaching and learning.
EASTER EGG RAFFLE School council will run a special Easter egg raffle for
the students and staff at Parkwood Green. All students
and staff will have their name put into a hat and one
student from each class will be lucky enough to win an
Easter egg.
If you don’t want your child tp participate, please let
your classroom teacher know by Friday 1st April.
BUZY KIDS TRAFFIC SCHOOL Last week Grade 2 students visited the Buzy Kids
Traffic School in Mill Park. They learnt lots of
interesting safety information about riding bikes, being
a safe pedestrian and also travelling safely in a car.
Students learnt that the safest place for them to travel
is in the back of a car with a booster seat. They also
learnt about the importance of wearing a helmet when
riding a bike or scooter and how to wear it correctly.
Students enjoyed riding the bikes around the track and
following the rules of the signs and traffic lights. They
were also able to relax and enjoy a run around in the
play centre.
Thank you to all the parent helpers that came along to
make it a great excursion, we all appreciate your
assistance.
WALKING SCHOOL BUS The Walking School Bus™ is a fun, safe and active
way for primary school children to travel to and from
school. The bus operates with a volunteer ‘driver’ at
the front of the group and a volunteer ‘conductor’ who
supervises from the rear.
The bus travels along a set route which is safety
audited by council and picks up passengers along the
way. The passengers are the children.
The bus is powered by leg power and operates rain,
hail or shine.
Each volunteer undergoes a Police Check, Working
with Children Check, short training session and will be
registered as a Melton Shire Council volunteer.
The success of the program relies on the assistance
of volunteers, so if you have a free hour one morning
or afternoon a week to walk with a group of children to
or from school we would like to hear from you!!
More volunteers mean more buses.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would
like your child to participate in this fabulous, fun, free
program come see either Simone Iachini, Yeliz Latif or
Rhowena O’Sullivan.

PARENT APPOINTMENTS There have been a number of incidents lately where
parents have come to the school and expected to see
a particular staff member (often the principal, vice
principal or a teacher) immediately. Invariably they are
disappointed that the particular staff member is
actually doing something else and cannot abandon
what they are doing to speak with them straight away.
Similarly, some parents ring the school and expect to
speak to certain staff members immediately, or leave
instructions for staff members to ring them back by a
certain time. While the vast majority of parents realise
that schools are busy places, and get busier as they
get bigger, a small group still expect staff members
should be “on call‟, or that they, as parents, can give
instructions to staff members regarding meeting times,
and phone conversations etc. It is a little bit like going
to the doctors, or the dentists, or virtually any other
professional organisation – an appointment is always
the best way. There is a very high likelihood that the
person who you wish to speak to has a very busy day,
and cannot continually abandon their tasks to stop and
talk to any of the 1800 parents associated with the
school who may want to have an impromptu chat.
Appointments are the way to go. When ringing to
make an appointment or to ask for a return call you
will be asked what the matter is concerning. This way
the receptionists can direct your call to the most
appropriate person. Almost everyone who rings will
want to talk to the principal. This will happen 100
times every day. However, in most circumstances, the
principal is not the best person to speak with regarding
your issue. So the receptionist will ask what the call is
concerning and direct the call accordingly. An
appointment will not be made for callers who refuse to
disclose what the call is about. This way parents will
get to speak with the most appropriate person, in the
least amount of time.

PARENT HELPERS
Next term we are inviting parents to assist in
classrooms with our Literacy Block. Parents who
completed the Parents Helpers Course last year will
be able to start assisting in classrooms from the
beginning of Term 2. In the coming week,
classrooms will have timetables displayed for
parent helpers to indicate which times they are
available to help.
For other parents who would like to assist, we will
be running a Parent Helpers Course in the first week
of next term in two sessions. Parents who work in
rooms MUST have completed this course and also
have a current Working with Children Check.
If you are interested in attending either of the two
sessions, please indicate this by returning this slip to the
office or your teacher, no later than 9am, Tuesday the 5th
April. If you have any further questions, please speak to
Sarah Afiouni or Amy Crawford, located in Room 35.
