Outdoor Sunday
June 29th will be Outdoor Sunday with worship at the Keezletown Ruritan Park. Following
worship will be lunch. Hot dogs, sloppy joes, and drinks will be provided. Please bring side
dishes and desserts to share. If you have brought a visitor with you, please make sure they get one or if you notice a visitor here at KUMC, then let a greeter know to give them one. Pray for Belize Mission Trip
Ann and Wes Ford will be joining 14 others from the Harrisonburg District going on a mission
trip to Belize to help finish work on a High School in Belmopan, the capitol of Belize, on June
28th – July 6th. Team Members are: Jeanne Bridgeman, Mt. Hermon; Lora Buracker, Stanley;
Melissa Fretwell; Ann & Wes Ford, Keezletown; Rob and Scott Lee, Vision of Hope; Martha
Mobley, Mt. Hermon; Rev. Brian Posey, Fellowship -Linville -Edom Charge; Diane Secord,
Vision of Hope; Ansel Seeds, Harriston; and Shirley & Danny Trobaugh, Grottoes. There is a
prayer form where you can covenant to pray for Ann & Wes each day during their mission trip,
with prayer suggestions included and a form to turn in marking your commitment. Committing
to daily prayer will be a blessing to Wes, Ann, and Belize. Please turn in your commitment forms

There is a resource guide to prayer in the parlor which includes prayers, hymns, and scriptures
that relate to the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, which can be used by those who want to
pray at the church individually or with a group.

Keezletown UMC Christmas Ornaments
Christmas ornaments with a beautiful image of the church building are available at $5.00 each.
A man is recovering from surgery when the Surgical Nurse appears and asks him how he is
feeling. 'I'm O.K. But I didn't like the four letter-word the doctor used in surgery,' he
answered. 'What did he say,' asked the nurse. He looked at her and said, 'Oops!'
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHOIR The Choir will be taking a Summer hiatus after singing on Father’s Day until Labor Day. We encourage the talented family of KUMC to assist with Special Music on Sundays as you are led to participate. Please contact Joel or Chris. The formation of a youth choir and a children’s choir are being planned to possibly sing during part of this time. Further info will follow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STUDY THE LORD’S PRAYER The Adult Sunday School class has embarked on an in-depth study of the Lord’s Prayer. All are welcome to attend. Sunday school begins at 9:45 a.m., and the class meets in the social hall. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEACHERS NEEDED The Education Committee is searching for a couple of teachers for the new Sunday School year
which starts in September. A co-teacher is needed for grades 6-8. A new class is being formed
for grades 2-5, so one or two teachers are needed for that class. If you are interested, or have any

2014 Virginia Annual Conference and Offering
“Lord, Renew Us With Your Spirit” will be the theme for this year’s annual conference June 20-22, 2014 in Hampton, VA. There will be worship, preaching, study, work for mission, and church administration at the conference. Please be praying for Bishop Young Jin Cho as he leads our conference, and for the delegates from our church this year: Chris Cole, Scott Dillard, Dale Dodrill, Karen Mooney, and Joel Robinette. The UMW are making Kits for Conference to bless people in need. An offering will be collected during worship on June 15th for the Virginia Annual Conference Offering. Bishop Cho has set a goal of $200,000 to benefit 8 ministries: $50,000 for Imagine No Malaria; $50,000 for the mission in Cambodia; $25,000 for the mission in Mozambique; $15,000 for the mission in Brazil; $30,000 to help children in poverty in Virginia through Community Outreach Program of Roanoke and Agape Christian Children’s Community Center in Horntown; and $20,000 for conference mission work in Haiti. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summer Camp at Overlook This summer campers will meet Mary Magdalene and the “Gardner” at the empty tomb, walk to
Emmaus with a surprise visitor, revisit Pentecost, celebrate the Church’s Birthday, survive
Roman persecution and meet with Timothy in the catacombs. These are just some of the
highlights of an action packed week of fun and spiritual growth. Look out Camp Overlook - the
kids (and Pastor) from KUMC are coming!!! Pastor Joel will be serving as the camp Chaplain
the week of July 13th - 18th and several of our kids have chosen to participate in summer camp
that week to offer him their support - isn't that nice? :) Please keep each of these children in
your prayers as they attend camp and grow in their faith: Caleb Hall, Marcus Hall, Jacob
Hall, Leigha Dillard, Kendra Dodrill, Toni Underwood, Julia Lucatorto, Creed Combs,

The “Pie Jenny Dillard” event held on June 8th after worship raised $235 for Camp Overlook
scholarships, thanks to your generosity. According to Jenny, “It was a “Pie Palooza”! Great way
to find out who your friends are—I felt a lot of LOVE today.” She was a great sport.

Three nature lovers went for a drive into the mountains one day to see if they could spot
some bears. They wanted to take pictures of bears for their photo album. So they drove
along an old dirt road until they entered the trees. As they rounded a curve, they spotted
a sign that read, "BEAR LEFT." So they turned around and went home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KEEZLETOWN 2ND ANNUAL GOLF CHALLENGE The Keezletown UM Men will host the 2nd annual Par 3 Golf Challenge at Packsaddle Ridge Golf
Club, Sunday, September 14th, starting at 2:00 p.m. The entire course will be set up as par
threes. Entry fee is $50 and includes green fees, cart, dinner and door prizes. All proceeds will
go to support the Salvation Army Shelter of Harrisonburg. The goal is to raise enough money to
sponsor one bed for an entire year! (Approximately $5,000). We are encouraging groups and
businesses to pray about a hole sponsorship of $100. Space is limited so reserve your spot

Ministries Website Page If you help with a ministry at KUMC and would like it listed on our website please submit to Pastor Joel a brief description of the ministry and a digital photo that shows that ministry in action. Descriptions of a ministry could include things like: times of meetings, activities or mission that is done, who can be involved, or how to learn more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FLOWERS Flowers on the altar table (or piano/organ) are such a beautiful part of the sanctuary. If you are interested in placing flowers in memory or honor of your loved ones or on a special occasion, please write your name on the flower calendar posted on the narthex door. If they are for a special occasion or for someone special, please notate on the calendar or let Lynn Siler ([email protected]) or Ann Ford (434-3955 or [email protected]) know so that it can be listed in the bulletin for that Sunday. Thank you for helping to beautify our sanctuary.

pretty seriously when He died for me on the cross.

CAOS Youth have officially taken a break for the summer! The proceeds from our book and
bake sale totaled $193.00, and that money is tentatively marked to be used for Christmas gifts for
Cub Run students. The youth may sponsor a lunch after church later in the summer to help with
other mission projects, so be watching for more information. Thanks for your support.

“LIGHT THE FIRE FEST”
A blessed day at camp!! Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Light the Fire Fest
Committee, members of the Overlook summer staff, and members of the Overlook Board of
Directors, our 3rd annual Light the Fire Fest was a day of fun and fellowship for many families!
Proceeds from this event will benefit the Overlook Camp Scholarship Fund. At the time of this
article, the exact total we can add to the fund is not yet clear. However, a very popular “Pie the
Pastor” event, wonderful donations to our silent auction, and the support of area churches
through booth participation will ensure that many disadvantaged children and youth will get to
experience a week at camp. A highlight of the day was when Ron, Kelli, and Gary faced off in
the “pie chair”! Kelli appeared to have “won”, raising the most money and earning the privilege
of kissing the neighbor’s goat. However, a last minute donation evened the score and Ron also
puckered up! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL Council met on May 28th at 7:30 p.m. in the church social hall, with eleven members present. The
meeting was called to order by chairman Bob Threewitts and opened in prayer by Joel Robinette. Chris
Cole gave the Treasurer’s report. Under old business, Joe Liskey reported Relay for Life was a success.
Ann Ford reported that sign-up sheets would be made available on June 1st for volunteers for the lawn
party, with donation sheets coming in the near future. Under committee reports, Jenny Dillard reported
that there will be a pizza and movie night on June 6th, in celebration of school being over. During the
evening they will also being working on plans for future events for Jesus’ Kids. CAOS Youth reported
they will be holding a book and bake sale on the morning of May 31st , here at the church. Adult and
Family reminded everyone of the Outdoor service/picnic planned for June 29th at the Ruritan Park. Chris
Cole reported the UMW had met on May 8th. They are planning their Evening Out, June 5th, at Red
Lobster, at 6:30 p.m. The graduates will be honored on June 8th, during Worship. Jim Dillard reported
the UMM had attended the District Men’s meeting on April 22nd; hosted a special speaker at the May
men’s meeting; will be participating in the District Golf Tournament on May 31st; will be serving a picnic
at the Salvation Army on June 28th; and will again be sponsoring a golf tournament in September at
Packsaddle Golf Course. Trustees reported that a new oil tank has been acquired and the old one has
been removed. The pilots on the new stove will need to be lighted prior to using. Gas is currently turned
off between uses. The exterior lighting has been worked on. A “new” push mower has been donated for
church use. Missions reported that the District had Janet Lewis, a retiring missionary from the Middle
East, who is moving to the Fredericksburg area, visiting the weekend of May 17th & 18th. She spoke
here on the 18th. Education Committee is meeting on June 1st at 9:00 a.m. PPR will be doing a walk thru
of the parsonage on May 29th with the Trustee’s chair. Beth Morris is handling the postings of the
church’s Facebook account and helping Don Hawks with the website. Joel handed out his Pastor’s
report which included sermon schedules thru July. He will be on vacation June 9th-June 19th, and at
Annual Conference June 20th-22nd. Under other business, Joe Liskey moved that if enough money is
raised for Camp scholarships on June 8th during the “Pie Jenny”, that it would go to help the twelfth
young lady attending camp from the community. Jim Dillard seconded and the motion passed. The next
Council meeting will be July 16th at 7:30 p.m. in the social hall.

When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you
are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

MONDAY MORNING PRAYER OPPORTUNITY Early Morning Prayer or “EMP” meets on Monday mornings at 6:30 a.m., here at the church. Brief devotions are followed by silent and spoken prayers for others for the week. BJ would like to thank all who attend each Monday morning, and welcome others to join us. PRAYING FOR OTHERS? We all need to be prayed for. Please considering placing your name, or the name of someone
you know that needs prayer in the Prayer basket on Sunday mornings. If you write down
someone else’s name, please be sure to give a brief description (sick, hurting, death, etc) and
include your name, so that if there is a question we can contact you for more info. Then, just
pick a name out of the basket as you leave, and pray for that person all week. WHAT A
DIFFERENCE you will make in your prayer partner’s life for that week. If you happen to miss
picking up a name from the basket as you leave, please give me a call, as I gather up all the
unclaimed names, and I will see that you get a name. Diana
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A feisty 70-year-old woman had to call a furnace repairman. After a quick inspection the
man put some oil into the motor and handed her a $70 bill for labor. "Labor charges!" she
exclaimed. "It only took you five minutes." The repairman explained that his company had
a minimum one-hour charge on every house call. "Well, I want my remaining 55 minutes of
labor," the lady responded, and she handed him a rake. The repairman spent the next 55
minutes in her yard bagging leaves.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
GANGWAY TO GALILEE! Join us June 23rd-27th for another amazing year of
Vacation Bible School at KUMC. We will join Jesus at the Sea of Galilee,
participate in storytelling, sing songs of praise, learn verses from the Bible,
create in the craft shop, and play games. Mark your calendars and watch for
registration forms coming soon. If you are interested in helping and have not

GUIDELINES FOR CHURCH HEAT Church council has given individuals permission to turn on heat in rooms required at least 2-3 hours
ahead of scheduled event. Baseboards in the social hall should be on 3 or 4 and the thermostat set as
necessary; turn baseboards off and set thermostat at 58 when leaving. Keep in mind the thermostat on
the wall controls only the baseboard closest to the control. Thermostats in the classrooms need to be at
a level of comfort and turned off when leaving. The Nursery needs to be on at least 40 and the
bathrooms should always be on when leaving. The Sanctuary should be cut down to 58 degrees when
not needed.
DALE’S CORNER by Dale Dodrill For the 3rd year, we gathered at the farm in West Virginia for the two-day Dodrill “Smiley” reunion. The farm has been in the Dodrill Family for at least six generations. The three children of Russell and Edna Dodrill and their families plus three guests were present, a total of twenty people. It was a fun time to be together. We played games (competitive for a trophy or a ribbon), enjoyed delicious home cooked food, and shared in a Worship Service. At the beginning of our Outdoor Worship Service, I lit a white candle. I said that the burning candle signifies the presence of God, indicating the purity of Christ. The wick is the center of the candle, just as Christ should be the center of our lives. Due to the wind, the candle struggled to remain lit, but it did. Kendra
and Leigha began our service by singing “It’s a Beautiful Day” and truly it was, as we looked at each other and the beautiful blue sky above. For a few minutes, I think the birds stopped and listened to them sing. We then did everything the United Methodist do in a Worship Service except take up an offering. Through song and prayer, we just offered ourselves to Our Creator. The message was given by Michele Dodrill. She shared some of her joys and concerns from her faith story. It was from the heart, which make it special. Following the benediction, Kendra moved to the podium and asked if she could speak. She said, “just like the candle has gathered junk all around it, (the melted wax), so do we. But, Christ is still the center of our lives.” This was a special time for us to be together. LAWN PARTY The KUMC lawn party will be held on July 19th, with proceeds to pay our commitment of $3,000 to Camp Overlook for this year. The Walnut Ridge Boys will perform. If you have any suggestions for activities at the lawn party, please contact Ann Ford or Lynn Siler. Donations of cakes are needed. Each church family is asked to bake at least two cakes for the Cake Walk. If we have 100 cakes, we could possibly clear $1,500 on just the Cake Walk. So, every cake makes a difference. Thanks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Fifteen UMW members, one junior member, and Pastor Joel met on June 5th at Red Lobster Restaurant for their Annual UMW Night Out. They enjoyed good food, good fellowship, and lots of laughter. No business was discussed. Next meeting will be July 3rd at 7:30 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNITED METHODIST MEN The Tri-district UM.Men gathered at Shenvalee Golf Course, Saturday May 31st, for the 16th annual Mac Fleming Memorial golf tournament. Proceeds of this function, which netted approximately $7500.00 and were matched, benefited Camp Overlook, making this a very beneficial venture to the ongoing success of our precious camp. The Keezletown Church, represented by the foursome of Brandon Bowman, Scott Dodrill, Scott Dillard, and Jim Dillard, played to the best of their ability, but came up a little short of winning. We did have, as George Hirschmann (the weatherman) would say, a “beauty gorgeous” day. Scott Dodrill provided very nice golf towels made up with the United Methodist cross and flame on them, to be given away as door prizes, which were well received by the lucky winners. FROM THE HEART: TOY DRIVE FOR ST. JUDES
Becky Ryman and Caleb Hall collected new unopened toys and gift cards for the St Jude’s
Research Hospital on June 1st and June 8th. Extra toys were purchased with the money they were
given for shipping, as another donor generously agreed to pay for shipping to Memphis. Becky
and Caleb were overwhelmed with the generosity of everyone and just wish they could see the
little childrens’ faces when a little bit of joy is given to them. Caleb is already anticipating doing
this again next year, by catching some after Christmas sales and some bargains throughout the
year. Becky says, “We feel so blessed with all the love and support from the church. If you want
a church that is truly willing to go all the way for God, come visit us at KUMC”. Thank you so

EMU COMMUNITY CONCERT
August 9th Community! Concert! Free! This year's 4th annual "Back 2 School Bash" is featuring headline Christian artists: Sidewalk Prophets, Royal Tailor and 1 Girl Nation. The event will be held at the Eastern Mennonite University Commons.Outdoor activities, including live music and free food, begin at 3:00 p.m. Doors for the event open at 5:15 p.m. Concerts start 6pm. I’m from the SOUTH where…
Everyone pulls over to let a funeral procession pass. We don’t have fireflies, we got
‘lightnin bugs’. ‘Taters’ are mandatory, while shoes are NOT. “Y’all” is a proper noun.
“Ain’t” is a word. Chicken is fried. Biscuits come with gravy. Sweet tea is the ‘house’ wine.
Shopping carts are “buggies”. You never disrespect your elders. We talk to strangers. We
wave a lot! We love pearls, porches & peanuts, and “Blessin’ Hearts”.

JIM AND EVALYN CAMPBELL For those who are not aware, Jim and Evalyn live in Florida, but, in their travels to VA, have become a part of the KUMC family—a very inspirational part. Jim is battling cancer, but the joy and the faith that they have shown thru their e-mails and witnesses is remarkable. This is something they wanted to share with us, a prayer that comes from Encouraging Thoughts for Women: Joy, a gift from a dear friend: “Dear Lord, Help me to worship You even when it isn’t easy. When things are going well, it is easy to be joyful and let that joy be made manifest as praise. Teach me how to be joyful even in battle, to sing Your praises when enemies surround me. Thank You for being by my side even when times get tough. I will praise You through the storm. Amen”

PASTOR’S CHAT
Back on April 5, 2014, on the 5th Sunday in Lent, I was preaching on the Harvest
Window in the sanctuary and the illustration I used for the sermon was mowing grass. The
illustration was meant to reflect how like mowing grass there are opportune times for sharing
Christ with people with our testimony, meeting needs, friendship, serving, and the like. Many of
us make time for mowing our yards, and I believe we should be as faithful to make time to meet
people in the times they need Jesus. Especially when the Spirit is moving.
I did not know when I used that illustration that it would be such a big mowing year! My
wife told me recently if I ever preached on mowing grass again I would be in trouble. It has
really been growing this year. I have been mowing every 6 or 7 days. I missed my 6 to 7 day
window recently due to a few days of rain and the grass was tall!
That sermon illustration and the fast growing grass this spring has kept me reflecting on
the opportunities for ministry around me and I have been amazed at how much there is. God is
moving every day in our community and I just need to pay attention.
Becky Ryman shared a few months ago about a desire to do a toy drive for children at St.
Jude’s Hospital. I was not too excited about the idea but I told Becky I wanted to hear more
about it and why she wanted to do it. She shared with me why God had put it on her heart and I
was in. The church had a nice collection of toys to send to St. Jude’s, but I almost torpedoed the
idea. I’m glad I took time to listen for what God was doing in Becky.
Wes and Ann Ford are heading on a mission trip to Belize soon and I heard Bishop
Young Jin Cho talking about prayer…again…at a clergy meeting. God hit me on the side of the
head with the need to offer prayer support for the district mission trip. So with the help of
Melissa Fretwell, Ann, and Wes, a prayer opportunity has been put together for people to commit
to pray for the upcoming mission trip. The first Sunday the call for daily prayer during the trip
was announced, there were 9 people who committed to pray at least 90 minutes daily combined
during the trip.
Jenny Dillard put forth to church council that she would get in a chair and let people
throw pies at her to raise money for remaining summer camp scholarships to Camp Overlook.
One person heard that need and gave about $200 right away. That covered all the Keezletown
UMC kids but there was a child from another congregation going with our group and Jenny
wanted to help with her funds, too, so Jenny got in the pie chair and she was covered and soaked
with whip cream and gelatin from head to toe. That was wonderful and I threw a pie! She also
raised another $235 which funded that child God had on her heart.
I was talking with a couple at the church who has been in worship once in the last year.
They shared a need and the first thought I had, was that our congregation did not have ministry
that met their need. Second, I tried to think of which other congregation could meet their need
but I could not think of anywhere. Then I thought, here is a couple and one is a church member
sharing a need that we could meet right here. The three of us talked about some possibilities and
the wheels in my head have been spinning since!
Where is God moving around you? Where might you not rush to torpedoing ideas or
sending people somewhere else, but instead listen for what God is saying to you? I am going to
have to mow my grass this week again. I already know it. The grass is growing! I am going to
have an opportunity to work with Jesus in the harvest, too. Jesus is working and bringing
beautiful things. I just know it. It is just what Jesus does. Let’s join in. You never know, it might
just be a neighbor or family member needs their grass mowed and some of God’s grace today.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE
In Honor of Maya Angelou, who went to be with the Lord on May 28th: In a 2013 interview
with Oprah, Angelou describes reading the line "God loves me" over and over again. And
finally I said, "God loves me" [crying]. “It still humbles me that this force that makes
leaves and fleas and stars and rivers and you, loves me. Me, Maya Angelou. It's amazing. I
can do anything. And do it well. Any good thing, I can do it. That's why I am who I am, yes,
because God loves me and I'm amazed at it. I'm grateful for it.”
I must add that after seeing and hearing Fay Crowe’s testimony on June 8th, this sounds
very familiar. We are so very quick to judge ourselves and feel guilty, before we remember
that God loves us no matter what, in all of our imperfections, in every sad or glad time, in
every doubtful or hopeful time, in every shameful or joyous time. HE made you and me.
HE loves you and me---worts and all! What more does He have to do to help us realize
that? He gave His most precious gift—His one and only perfect Son, so that you and I
might one day return to Him and live in His presence, in glory, and in love, for eternity.
God loves me. GOD loves me. God LOVES me. God loves ME. GOD LOVES ME…AND YOU.
