MAKOTO ARIMOTO
CHIEF ENGINEER – RAV4 TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION
Makoto Arimoto is a Chief Engineer at the Product Planning Group ZD of Toyota Motor
Corporation in Aichi, Japan. He is responsible for the development of the RAV4.
Born in Okayama, Japan in 1960.
Majored in metal processing, graduated with a master’s degree from the Graduate School of
Engineering at Kyoto University. As a student, he spent his time out of class playing bass
guitar in a band that performed R&B and blues music.
Joined Toyota Motor Corporation in 1984 because of a deep admiration for the first Celica
model, which was called “the car that came from the land of dreams.” He was assigned to
the Electronics Engineering Division where he worked on the 4WD and ECT (Electronically
Controlled Transmission) control systems. He approached these and other projects with a
unique perspective based on metal processing technology, which he cultivated at Kyoto
University. He also worked on developing audio systems; using his experience as a band
guitarist, he created the foundation for producing high-quality car audio. The next step in his career involved a move to the Technical Administration Division, where
he was responsible for the development of organizational plans. Then, he took part in the
production of fuel cell systems at the Fuel Cell Development & Planning Division. In 2005,
he was transferred to Toyota Commercial Vehicle Development Center ZN where as a Chief
Engineer he participated in the development of the Land Cruiser Prado.
In 2010, he moved to his current division in the Product Planning Group ZD, where he
serves as the Chief Engineer for new-generation RAV4. His policy towards vehicle development is “do my utmost upon receiving a job.” A point he
values heavily when evaluating a car is whether the customer can or cannot feel the
commitment that went into building the vehicle.
Since the beginning of his career, he has led the development of various models, such as
the 4Runner, Land Cruiser Prado, Tacoma, and Lexus GX. He currently lives in Toyota City with his wife and 15 cats.
He claims that his favorite pastime is doing nothing.
His favorite cars are rally and sports cars.

Message from the Chief Engineer
Impassioned and challenging development process The RAV4 is a global strategic model that is sold in more than 150 countries and regions worldwide. As Chief Engineer, I found the management of this vehicle development to be a very stimulating challenge. As I spent more time on this project, I increasingly felt that I had nurtured the next-generation RAV4 and resolved to give it my all to ensure its success. This feeling became even stronger as the development proceeded.
In the development stage, my experience as a Chief Engineer for the Land Cruiser Prado proved very helpful as it provided me with background knowledge of SUVs, such as their requirements, usage, and worldwide trends. Using this information, I was able to incorporate a new perspective into the development of the next-generation RAV4.
Continuing the highly acclaimed pedigree of the current generation RAV4 When we began the vehicle development, we decided to return to basics by understanding why so many customers around the world appreciated their RAV4. As a result, we reaffirmed the two principles that have been the foundation of RAV4s. These principles are: (1) a sense of security while driving on the severest of roads, and (2) cabin and cargo spaces that accommodate a wide range of user requirements.
The first principle factors in the various kinds of terrain, such as snow-covered roads, dirt roads, and sandy roads, that can be found around the world. With this in mind, the RAV4 must continue to offer reassuring capability, even in challenging road conditions.
The second principle, on the other hand, requires that the RAV4 be versatile, with a wide range of features to accommodate the needs of both business and recreational use. It was especially important that the vehicle be able to meet the diverse recreational demands of a wide range of users. They may be bicycle riding, boating, skiing, camping, etc. Therefore, the users should be able to load their bicycles as well as other equipment, including skis, camp gear, and kayaks.
I believe that the ultimate mission of RAV4 is to fulfill these two main principles.
A dramatic evolution of the RAV4 According to Consumer Reports ratings in North America, the current RAV4 ranks higher than the competition in every category except for the one that questions if customers would purchase their vehicle again. After contemplating how we can make the RAV4 a vehicle that customers would want to repurchase, we decided that our highest priority must be the exterior design. As a result, we boldly redesigned the vehicle’s design elements, which had been handed down over generations. In particular, we took great pains to create a front design that would express the model’s charms. Through repeated improvements based on trial and error, we created a front face that evokes the eyes of an athlete who is firmly set on reaching the goal. The result is a striking, unforgettable design at first sight.
Another improvement was driving pleasure. Aiming to achieve a sportier driving experience characteristic of a 4WD vehicle, we enhanced the agile handling performance that is highly regarded in the current model.
To achieve top market share with its major model change in seven years, we will preserve RAV4’s legacy and integrate solutions to meet the needs of today’s customers. As such, the next-generation model is a car that has fulfilled all my hopes and expectations for the RAV4.

Giving our customers the experience of a totally reborn RAV4
Over 700 staff members came together to prioritize the feelings of each customer and reflect them in the development of the next-generation RAV4. I am confident that customers will be impressed by the next-generation RAV4 and view it as a sign of Toyota’s ambitions and spirit.
I am confident that the next-generation RAV4 will sell itself. I would like you to have total confidence in its appeal and quality, and I personally look forward to working together to make it a global success.
Origin of the Name
The name “RAV4” was conceived as a vehicle name well suited for a small SUV in a category different from that of conventional SUVs. It is based on the first letters of the words Recreational, Active, Vehicle, and 4-wheel drive. This easy-to-remember name matches the image of the vehicle, which is active, sporty, youthful, untamed yet cosmopolitan, and stylish. Another reason for the name can be traced back to RAV4’s predecessor, the RAV-FOUR, which was introduced at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show.

Product Planning Background
Advantages and challenges highlighted in visits to customers in major markets After the current model was launched, genchi-genbutsu research of over 250 current customers around the world was initiated from an early stage to develop the next-generation RAV4.
This investigation included visits to all 250 customers, who welcomed researchers into their garages and even their living rooms. From these visits, the research team succeeded in gathering information about customers’ daily and weekend habits and activities. In addition, group interviews and Internet research were extensively held to grasp the minute details of consumers’ lifestyles. In other words, this research involved close observation of RAV4 drivers’ view of life.
Genchi-genbutsu research of customers was also carried out in China to closely examine their needs by asking them for specific reasons why they purchased their SUV and, in particular, why they chose the RAV4.
These investigations have demonstrated that SUV users tend to dislike owning the same car as other drivers and express themselves through their vehicles. As a result, these customers are expecting the next-generation RAV4 to feature the following characteristics: (1) compact exterior but spacious cabin interior, (2) stylish and visually powerful exterior design that outstands from those of competitors, and (3) higher fuel efficiency than that of current models. Overall, these findings highlighted customers’ expectations and clarified areas for improvement.
Creating a small SUV that meets the expectations of active couples Many typical SUV drivers do not feel constrained by their age and live with a youthful spirit. They are reluctant to have lifestyles imposed on them and actively take on new challenges with heartfelt enthusiasm. This is why SUVs should display a playful attitude which distinguishes them from cars in other categories.
On the weekdays, drivers will use the SUV for business; on the weekends, they will take their families and friends on a ride for leisurely pursuits. In North America, for example, a husband may commute to work in his SUV, or his wife may take it for some shopping. However, on the weekends, this couple may take their SUV for a long drive to Lake Tahoe. These were the symbolic scenes that were envisioned when developing the next-generation RAV4.
To fulfill this aim, sufficient cargo space was necessary. With the ability to hold one week’s groceries or more, it can also carry skiing, fishing, or camping gear that customers need to enjoy their weekends and holidays. And, above all, an assertive exterior design that is suited for active customers was crucial. Furthermore, it was necessary to enhance fuel efficiency and traction performance that provide drivers with confidence and peace of mind even when venturing long distances. As for the back seats, the large and comfortable rear seats should ensure that passengers can relax when travelling to a restaurant or other destinations with family or friends. Visualizing these scenarios, development moved forward by embodying a wide range of details and responding to customers’ expectations.

Product Concept
The “Strong Athlete” design expresses a sense of youthfulness from the inside, as well as strength and multi-use capabilities.
The motif for the development concept of the next-generation RAV4 was a triathlon. The triathlon was selected because it embodies an inner strength that wells up and pushes an individual, regardless of age, to take on new challenges. Furthermore, participants in this competition must summon the strength to quickly switch their mindsets and keep moving towards their goal through various activities, such as swimming, cycling, and running. From the perspective of SUV users, the flexibility and fortitude seen in triathlons also apply to their daily life as they must switch from business to leisure in their vehicles.
It was thus concluded that this similarity was the basic concept shared by both the next-generation RAV4 and target users, and “Strong Athlete” was chosen as the key phrase for the vehicle development.
Aiming at No. 1 market share During the development stage, competitors’ vehicles were thoroughly investigated. Primary competitors consisted of the Honda’s CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. The Ford Escape and – though it is in a different SUV segment – the KIA Sorento were also designated as competitors. Through this investigation, the development direction of the next-generation RAV4 was clarified to create a vehicle that will not lose to its competition.
To achieve this goal, the agility of the RAV4, which is already highly regarded in the current model, has been further honed. In addition, much effort was poured into the development of a spacious cabin, excellent fuel efficiency, and an exterior design to meet customer expectations. All of these enhancements ensure that the next-generation RAV4 will win top market share in the small SUV category.

Eight Major Selling Points
Based on the principles inherited from previous RAV4 models, a host of new features and enhancements have been integrated into this global strategic model. These points are summarized into eight selling points as shown below:
These selling points can be broadly classified into three categories, [A] - [C], that correspond with the typical purchasing process that begins with advertising, which creates interest, follows with a dealership visit to experience the car, and ends with a purchase after taking a test drive and examining catalogues.
1. Impressive, dynamic exterior styling 2. Bold and high quality interior 3. Attractive fuel economy
4. Easy to maneuver 5. Spacious rear seat 6. Large cargo space
7. Fun to Drive 8. Versatile features
1. Impressive, dynamic exterior styling In line with the vehicle development concept of “Strong Athlete”, “Sophisticated Dynamic & Strong” was determined as the design concept. While “dynamic, strong” alone evokes a rugged sense of muscular strength, “sophisticated” has been added to create a stylish silhouette that expresses the vehicle’s deep inner and outer strength.
2. Bold and high quality interior The instrument panel expresses strength with a design theme that emphasizes the horizontal axis. Meanwhile, the asymmetrical design on the left and right side provide drivers with a heightened “Fun to Drive” sensation while giving a feeling of spaciousness in the front passenger area.
The instrument panel features soft stitched padding. In addition, metallic-toned decorations on meters and other parts produce a sense of high quality.
Clear Blue colored night illumination has also been adopted.
3. Attractive fuel economy Both enhanced acceleration and class-top level fuel efficiency have been achieved through improvements such as an increase in the number of transmission speeds and enhanced aerodynamic performance.
[A] Convincing value for money
[B] Smart packaging that impresses in the showroom
[C] Desirable features and performance worth the cost
Development Concept (Mar. 27, 2012)
C__6/25
4. Easy to maneuver
Featuring a highly acclaimed compact size similar to the current model, the minimum turning radius has been maintained. (compared to the current long-wheelbase models)
The front pillars have also been moved 30 mm towards the outside of the vehicle, aiding visibility. The edges of the hood have been specifically designed to be seen from the driver seat, aiding maneuverability.
5. Spacious rear seat Front seats with thinner seatbacks have been adopted, and class-top level rear leg space has been achieved.
6. Large cargo space Discontinuing the door-mounted spare tire has enabled the back door to be made thinner and more compact. This enables an increase in cargo space length and capacity. Furthermore, the use of the multi-purpose net has been continued to further enhance utility.
7. Fun to Drive What makes the new RAV4 fun to drive?
It starts when you first get into the driver seat and experience the revised driving position. From the revised steering wheel angle to the generous seat bolsters, drivers are reminded from the beginning of the RAV4’s sporting credentials. Next, once on their way the RAV4’s confident acceleration and agile handling continue to please. Furthermore, Dynamic Torque Control 4WD (4 Wheel Drive) with integrated sport mode has been newly designed to provide the driver with a stable and more connected feel to the road.
Additionally, unwanted noise and vibrations have been further reduced, creating what we believe to be a never before experienced level of fun to drive for the RAV4.
Fundamental handling performance has been refined to surpass the level of agility highly regarded in the current model.
Furthermore, Dynamic Torque Control 4WD has been developed for applicable models in order to extract a higher level of performance from the 4WD system. Conventional 4WD systems will only control torque distribution between the front and rear wheels in adverse conditions, such as on snowy or wet road. Dynamic Torque Control 4WD proactively controls torque distribution under normal driving conditions (dry road) as well, thereby enabling the vehicle to better follow the driver’s actions.
Furthermore, the control of various functions has been enhanced to respond more precisely to the driver inputs, including the transmission, steering, accelerator response and torque distribution.

Main Technologies
Dual VVT-i - Dual VVT-i is a system that continuously optimizes the timing of intake and exhaust valve operation
in accordance with driving conditions to provide a high level of engine performance in every area. This technology realizes excellent engine performance as well as enhanced fuel economy and lowered emissions.
ACIS - ACIS controls a valve in the intake manifold to switch between two different intake runner lengths,
optimizing intake air according to engine speed. This enhances engine efficiency and increases torque across the engine’s powerband.
TCV*1 - The TCV system*1 helps produce lower emissions by modifying intake airflow with a set of valves.
> The valves are closed when the engine is cold, tumbling the air and fuel in the intake path to thoroughly mix the combination and therefore improve combustion efficiency. This significantly reduces emissions.
> When the engine is operating in a range that provides optimal combustion without the need to tumble the intake air, the valves open to let the intake airflow smoothly, allowing for excellent engine performance.

Deceleration Downshift Control - Deceleration downshift control is implemented to achieve excellent fuel efficiency.
> During deceleration, flex lock-up control and downshift control are implemented to prevent engine speed from dropping below the fuel cut recovery point. As a result, the continuation of fuel cut control is maximized.
> Conventionally, when a vehicle was decelerating beginning from 6th gear, downshifting to 5th and 4th gears occurred following fuel cut recovery in 6th gear. Using downshift control when decelerating, downshifting to 5th and 4th gears (also to 3rd gear only when air conditioning turned “OFF”) takes place before fuel cut recovery in 6th gear, thereby maintaining the fuel cut status.

7-speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic Mode
- When the shift lever is moved to the M position, driving with a preferred shift step (pre-determined speed ratio) is possible using the + (UP) or - (DOWN) function of the shift lever. In addition, the upshift time has been shortened compared to the conventional system, and the response has been dramatically enhanced by electronically controlled throttle coordinated control.
M Position Shift Control - The M position shift control provides seven shift steps (pre-determined speed ratios). A preferred
shift step can be selected by operating the shift lever.
> The shift lever can be moved forward to upshift (+) and backward to downshift (-), enabling the driver to enjoy manual-like shifting operation.
- Optimum engine braking force can be achieved by each shift step. If the vehicle stops after being driven in a shift step other than M1 while the shift lever is in M, downshift control will automatically be performed to select M1.
Automatic Shift Control Related to Sequential Shiftmatic Mode - Upshift control is automatically performed to select the next higher shift step to prevent the engine
speed from becoming too high.
- Downshift control is automatically performed to select the next lower shift step to prevent the engine speed from becoming too low.
Shift Indicator - When the M position is selected, the shift indicator display is switched as below:

Uphill/Downhill Shift Control
- Uphill/downhill shift control judges whether the vehicle is traveling uphill or downhill based on accelerator operation, vehicle speed, and other information. When traveling uphill, speed ratio changes are restricted to achieve smooth vehicle operation. If any braking operation is detected when traveling downhill, the speed ratio is automatically changed to ensure appropriate engine braking force.
> Whether the vehicle is traveling uphill or downhill is determined by comparing the standard acceleration from the ECU and the actual acceleration calculated from the speed sensor signals. If the actual acceleration is smaller than the standard acceleration, it is determined that the vehicle is traveling uphill, and vice versa.
Uphill/Downhill shift control D1R-DP-242
Lock-up Control - Compared to the current AT model, the lock-up operating range has also been expanded, and the
lock-up is activated from a low-speed range. Additionally, the lock-up operating range for deceleration has also been expanded to cover low vehicle speed range. This expands the fuel cut range, achieving high fuel efficiency.
4. Clutch System The clutch system produces a “fun to drive” experience with an excellent shift feeling.
FEATURES
- The characteristics of the clutch discs have been optimized to help achieve both low inertia and
friction performance, providing an excellent shift feeling.
- Clutch facings with high heat resistance and anti-rust performance have been adopted.
- A CSC (Concentric Slave Cylinder) has been adopted to help achieve an excellent operational feeling of the clutch pedal and weight reduction.
- The following improvements have been implemented to help customers start off from a stop without stalling the engine. Initial pedal force is reduced to make the clutch easier to use.

SPORT Mode Control: - Pre-torque control, which operates based on input from the driver, has been adopted. In addition,
Yaw-rate feedback control, which is based on current driving conditions, has also been adopted.
> 1. Pre-torque control: Pre-torque control reduces the load on the front tires (with 90:10 front/rear torque distribution) from the moment the steering wheel is turned, helping to ensure an appropriate steering response based on cornering predictions gauged from the angle of the steering wheel. This achieves a steering feel that matches the driver’s intentions, and helps ensure vehicle stability.
> 2. Yaw-rate feedback control: The front/rear drive force distribution (max. 50:50) is determined based on input from the steering angle, yaw rate and other various sensors. This helps assist cornering performance by generating optimal drive force distribution and balancing the load between front/rear wheels.
- During deceleration through foot braking, 4WD is cancelled to enhance the effects of ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) and VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) control.

- Starting control (Carried over)
> Traction performance when starting on snowy or muddy roads has been ensured by increasing the rear torque distribution up to 50 %. When the vehicle speed reaches 25 km/h, the driving control switches to normal driving control.
- Normal driving control (Carried over)
> On highways or urban roads, the rear torque is cut to enhance fuel efficiency. When detecting slippery roads in which wheel skidding occurs, the controls are immediately activated to help ensure driving stability.
- Cornering control (New adoption)
> Cornering control is newly available. Pre-torque control increases rear wheel torque distribution up to 10 % by detecting the steering angle in SPORT mode. This enhances driving force distribution according to driving situation. The other is Yaw-rate feedback control that precisely adjusts the rear wheel torque depend on the lack or over of vehicle yaw-rate.
Product Detail (Jul. 4, 2014)
IV. DRIVING PERFORMANCE 2. Drive Train IV-2__23/23
- VSC corporative control (Carried over)
> Accelerating during cornering on a slippery road surface. When the front wheels skid and the vehicle runs outside the driver’s intended path, EPS (Electric Power Steering) assists for the turning direction, and torque is distributed to the rear wheels. Then vehicle stability is ensured.
- Braking control (Carried over)
> 4WD is canceled to enhance the effects of ABS and VSC control.
- LOCK mode control (Carried over)
> When starting off and driver push the LOCK mode switch, a maximum level of torque is transmitted to the rear wheels to enhance escape performance in situations such as when a vehicle is stuck.
> Cancelled at a vehicle speed exceeds 40 km/h or driver push the LOCK mode switch again.
BENEFIT
- Dynamic Torque Control 4WD achieves excellent traction and fuel efficiency.
> On snow-covered or other slippery road surfaces, Dynamic Torque Control 4WD achieves acceleration and start-off stability just like the full-time 4WD.
> The distribution of torque to the rear wheels only when necessary and only in the necessary amount increases fuel efficiency.
> When driving in SPORT mode, the Dynamic Torque Control 4WD enhances driving pleasure by contributing to driving and handling stability more suited to sporty driving compared to the conventional 4WD control system.

VII. SAFETY
1. Active Safety
1. Brake Control System Record of Deletions * Texts pertaining to the previous Active Torque Control 4WD system have been deleted due to the name change of the Active Torque Control 4WD system.
FEATURES
- ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and Brake Assist have
been adopted as standard equipment.
- VSC+ (Vehicle Stability Control+) has been adopted, which integrates EPS (Electric Power Steering) and VSC. In addition, Dynamic Torque Control 4WD system is adopted.
- VSC*, TRC (Traction Control)*, Downhill Assist Control*, and Hill-start Assist Control* are available. Downhill Assist Control has been adopted as standard equipment only for A/T models.
VSC*
- The VSC system helps ensure stability by automatically adjusting engine output and the braking force of each wheel when the vehicle experiences oversteer or understeer during cornering.
TRC*
- The TRC system supports the stability of the vehicle controlling wheel spin when starting or accelerating on slippery roads, as well as maintaining appropriate driving force during straight-line acceleration.
VSC+
- In contrast to the independent operation of conventional ABS, TRC, VSC and electrical power steering, VSC+ integrates VSC and EPS. In addition, Dynamic Torque Control 4WD system is adopted for AWD models, contributing to running, turning and stopping performance.
- Connecting VSC+’s systems via high-speed CAN communication allows to achieve real-time control that corresponds to driver operation and vehicle behavior.

VII. SAFETY 1. Active Safety VII-1__2/9
Straight-line Braking Feature
- In the event of sudden, straight-line braking on a road surface with different left-right traction characteristics, differences in left-right braking force can cause the vehicle to pull towards the side with the higher friction coefficient. VSC+ supplements conventional ABS with a steering assist function to help the driver correct for left-right vehicle pull by providing assist torque to compensate for differences in left-right braking force.
D1R-SA-010
Corner Braking Feature
- Unexpected circumstances or external factors, such as sudden changes in road conditions, can cause oversteer or understeer when cornering. In order to ensure vehicle stability in these situations, VSC+ automatically regulates engine output and distribution of braking force to each wheel in order to moderate rear (oversteer) and front (understeer) wheel slippage. In addition, VSC+
simultaneously provides electric power steering assist torque to communicate the performance limits of the vehicle and help the driver to steer in the direction that provides greatest stability.

VII. SAFETY 1. Active Safety VII-1__3/9
Straight-line Acceleration Feature
- If the throttle is opened too much when starting or accelerating on a slippery road surface, the excessive torque can cause drive wheel slip that diminishes handling control and start/acceleration performance. In addition, differences in drive force to the vehicle’s left- and right-side wheels that can occur because of variations in the road surface may cause the vehicle to pull towards the side with the lower friction coefficient. VSC+ supplements conventional TRC by adding a steering assist function that helps the driver to correct for left-right vehicle pull providing additional steering torque to compensate for differences in left-right drive force.

VII. SAFETY 1. Active Safety VII-1__4/9
Cornering Acceleration Feature
- When accelerating through a turn on a slippery road surface, there are instances in which drive wheel slippage may occur, causing oversteer or understeer. In order to ensure vehicle stability in these or other similar situations, TRC and VSC regulates engine output in accordance with drive wheel slip and turn conditions. When necessary, brake force is also automatically applied to the vehicle’s outside wheels. VSC+ supplements these systems by controlling the distribution of drive torque to the front and rear wheels in order to maintain vehicle stability while achieving acceleration that closely approximates driver intention.
D1R-SA-015
BENEFIT
- VSC+ enhances running, turning and stopping performance, enabling stable vehicle behavior and
smooth acceleration, even on wet road surfaces or tight turns.
To reduce the tendency of the vehicle to understeer (front wheel slip), more drive force is distributed to the rear wheels than to the front wheels, stabilizing the vehicle and enhancing acceleration performance.

Downhill Assist Control
- Useful during steep descents, Downhill Assist Control has been adopted as standard equipment for VSC equipped A/T models.
BENEFIT
- During a steep descent, the engine brake alone may not be sufficient to reduce speed even when
the automatic transaxle shift lever is in the first range or R range. Downhill Assist Control assists the driver by automatically applying appropriate hydraulic pressure to the brakes in order to maintain a constant low speed, without locking the wheels. This allows the driver to concentrate on steering the vehicle.
- Downhill Assist Control maintains a constant low speed even on slippery descents. Moreover, because the system prevents wheel lockup, vehicle vibration is negligible even on steep and uneven descents, allowing for ensured stability.
- To enhance steering performance, Downhill Assist Control* prevents wheel lockup when the system is in operation. This helps ensure the driver’s ability to avoid obstacles and change directions.

Hill-start Assist Control*
- Hill-start assist control* is available to assist starting on hills. - When starting off on a steep or slippery incline, the vehicle may roll back when the driver releases
the brake pedal in order to apply the accelerator. Hill-start assist control* helps ensure smooth hill starts by automatically applying brake pressure to all four wheels for approximately two seconds in order to hold the vehicle and prevent rollback.
BENEFIT
- When starting off on a steep incline, the vehicle may roll back when the driver releases the brake pedal to apply the accelerator. Hill-start assist control helps ensure smooth hill starts by automatically applying brake pressure for approximately two seconds in order to hold the vehicle and prevent rollback.

VII. SAFETY 1. Active Safety VII-1__7/9
Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential)
- An Auto LSD is added to the 2WD models with VSC*.
- The Auto LSD uses the TRC system to perform the LSD function. Compared with TRC, the Auto LSD places a greater emphasis on controlling wheel spin to assist with freeing the vehicle when one of the drive wheels is not in contact with the road and to enhance start-off performance on road surfaces with large rolling resistance, such as sand.
- The Auto LSD is effective when one of the drive wheels spins, such as when one of the wheels is not in contact with the road surface or during start-off on a hill when the wheels on one side of the vehicle are on a snowy or icy surface. The system minimizes differences in rotation speed between the right and left drive wheels by applying the brakes to control the spinning wheel so that torque can be applied to the opposite wheel.
- The Auto LSD can be used on road surfaces with large rolling resistance, such as sand or mud, or in situations when one of the wheels is not in contact with the road surface. Briefly pressing the VSC OFF switch activates the TRC OFF mode.
- When the Auto LSD is operative, the Auto LSD indicator will illuminate. When the Auto LSD is activating, the slip indicator will illuminate.
VSC OFF Switch - The Auto LSD*1 switch has been discontinued and a VSC OFF switch has been adopted for 2WD
models.
- A VSC OFF switch has been added to the models with VSC*.
- Briefly pressing the VSC OFF switch in normal mode enters TRC OFF mode, turning the Auto LSD*1 on. Pressing and holding the same switch for 3 seconds or more with the vehicle stopped enters VSC OFF mode, disabling the VSC, TRC and Auto LSD*1 functions.
- Briefly pressing the VSC OFF switch in TRC OFF or VSC OFF mode or turning the ignition switch off returns to normal mode.
