BACTOSCAN MINI-PETRIFOSS xxii / Affaires de l'Institut Rapid Test for Carcinogens A new bacterial test for detection of carcinogens and mutagens is available from BIO/CAN Scientific. The test, call- ed the 5.0.5. Chromotest, requires on- ly a few hours to complete and is available in kit form. The test employs a genetically engineered strain of bacteria in which a Beta-Galactosidase gene has been inserted next to a DNA repair gene. When this bacterial strain is exposed to a genotoxic agent, the Beta-Galactosidase gene is activated in tandem with the DNA repair gene, and can be measured by a simple col- orimetric test. In a few hours, 5.0.5. Chromotest provides a clear, complete- ly objective measurement of the genotoxicity of a compound. Sensitivi- ty is equal to the Ames Mutatest, but time requirement is much less and the test can easily be applied to large scale screening. The test kit is distributed by: BIO/CAN Scientific Inc., 2368 Dunwin Drive, Mississauga, Ontario L5L 1J9 (416) 828-2455 New Food Publications Two fact sheets on food preserva- tion and food additives are now avail- able.
