Rapid Test for Carcinogens
A new bacterial test for detection ofcarcinogens and mutagens is availablefrom BIO/CAN Scientific. The test, called the 5.0.5. Chromotest, requires only a few hours to complete and isavailable in kit form. The test employsa genetically engineered strain ofbacteria in which a Beta-Galactosidasegene has been inserted next to a DNArepair gene. When this bacterial strainis exposed to a genotoxic agent, theBeta-Galactosidase gene is activated intandem with the DNA repair gene, andcan be measured by a simple colorimetric test. In a few hours, 5.0.5.Chromotest provides a clear, completely objective measurement of thegenotoxicity of a compound. Sensitivity is equal to the Ames Mutatest, buttime requirement is much less and thetest can easily be applied to large scalescreening. The test kit is distributed by:
