Welcome back and wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year 2013. May God's grace prevail for all good things to happen around.

After a string of festivals in the last quarter of 2012, it was a series of customer interaction activities for Schwing Stetter India in the first

quarter of 2013. Schwing Stetter India participated and sponsored many events in the first quarter of 2013, viz., being the principal

sponsors of IFAWPCA the National Contractors' Association's convention in Kochi and being an active participant in the Cosmo Expo

2013 Fair at Raipur and the FIB Seminar at Larsen & Toubro's ECC Division, Chennai in the month of January, 2013. Schwing Stetter India

also participated in Bauma Conexpo's BC India Fair held at Mumbai and in the National Seminar on 'Constructions at Great Height

in High Rise Buildings' conducted by the Institution of Engineers, Mumbai during February 2013.

    3

Our equipment also created a record of sorts, which are detailed in this issue. Noteworthy of these are 1840 m of concrete produced by

Lafarge in 55 hours and 83 m vertical pumping by a small Schwing pump SP1200 in Pune. I am sure with more and more co-operation and

understanding among our technicians and the customers, we are poised to set many more records. Schwing Stetter India since inception,

strongly believed in education and training of its employees, technicians, customers' operators & technicians, besides

conducting specialised seminars by inviting specialists from its parent company in Germany on special concreting

technology. In continuing with this education / training programs, we have taken up the task of providing

leadership and managerial training program for our middle and senior level executives at IIM Lucknow. About 20

employees would undergo training during this initiative. Such initiatives are with a view to prepare ourselves for

the future challenges, as we strongly believe that India is a growing market.

The Union Budget was announced and even though there are not many surprises, it appeared that the government

and the finance ministry are determined to push infrastructure projects and thus, economic development. We hope

to see many fresh contracts being awarded which will improve the sentiments of the stake holders.

I wish you all a successful and bright future.

Going the Distance Niagara Tunnel Project

An entire fleet of eleven Schwing stationary pumps with various

configurations along with extensive fleet of Schwing boom pumps,

under the guidance of Pumpcrete, conveniently located in Niagara

Falls, are working around the clock on Niagara tunnel project. The

project will divert 35 percent of the Niagara River at night and a new

massive diversion tunnel will add additional hydroelectric power to an

existing generating station with enough electricity for 160,000 more

    homes.

Pumpcrete has an extensive tunnel lining resume. The difference

with this tunnel is its immense diameter, explains Dave Moriarity,

Pumpcrete manager. This one you could erect a five story building

    inside the tunnel.

Shotcreting was part of the excavation contract to stabilize the bore

hole perimeter but additional shotcrete was required to fill voids in

loose soil conditions. The company utilised three Schwing SP 500 split

units to apply the shotcrete to a thickness of 13 cm through hand-

held hoses and shotcrete robots attached to the TBM (Tunnel Boring

Machine). The wet shotcrete was applied over reinforcing mats

    anchored into the tunnel walls.

A shotcrete arm provided extra reach to fill voids that occurred when

soil conditions were not ideal. A Schwing SP 1000 was used to feed

the arm and to provide additional velocity to the shotcrete. Strabag

subcontracted batch plant operations and trucks supplied the pre-

mixed shotcrete to the electrically powered pumps. More than

120,000 cubic meter of shotcrete was applied

over the five years of tunneling.

Following behind the shotcreting operation is the form and pour for

the tunnel invert the bottom one-third of the tunnel lining.

Pumpcrete utilised two Schwing SP 2000 stationary pumps that are

fed by agitator trailers hauled in by trucks. The tunnel lining concrete

is a pumpable mix according to Moriarity, explaining that the mix

    designs are proprietary.

Output to the two form systems that leapfrogged their way through 3

the bore hole was between 40 and 50 m per hour. The form systems

travel about 50 meters in front of the electric powered trailer pumps. 3

Each pour advances the invert 12.5 meters and consumes 120 m of

concrete. Water is used to clean out the pipeline systems with a

diversion valve on the pump's discharge that sends wash water and

residual concrete into trailers to be disposed off outside the tunnel.

The loads must be spread evenly throughout the tunnel's

circumference. Therefore, all voids need to be grouted in order to

keep the thickness of the inner lining within specified tolerances of 30

centimeters. Because of the internal water pressure of up to 15 bar

(2,175 psi), the lining must be fitted accurately into the surrounding

    rock.

Pumpcretes close location to the project allows them to draw on

their extensive fleet of Schwing boom pumps

Waterproofing Manager Stefan Mackinger explains why elaborate

waterproofing is mandatory for the success of this tunnel, The

tunnel designer specified a single-layer waterproofing membrane for

non-swelling rock and a double-layer membrane for the Queenston

Formation, an area that contains argillite, which swells in contact with

water and would ruin the concrete lining.

To complete the remaining two-thirds of the concrete tunnel,

Pumpcrete chose a Schwing electric SP 5000 split unit that was 3

positioned under an 8 m Maxon Maxcrete agitating surge hopper to

travel into the bore hole. A Schwing SP 8000 outside the tunnel fed

    the surge hopper.

Because of traffic through the tunnel, the SP 8000 pumped through a

five-inch line for as long as possible.

We were amazed that Schwing was able to push the mix as far as 1.7

kilometers, explained Pumpcrete owner, Ken Williams, Jr., That's

more than a mile and probably some sort of record. The crews

eventually resorted to feeding the pump with trucks and trailers.

    3

By the end of the project more than 300,000 m will be pumped with

the Schwing units. Pumpcrete's contribution to the project is

immeasurable. A partner in concrete placement means use of good

equipment, experience and reliable operators and parts support

especially in tunneling. Pumpcrete has supplied all of these

components. according to Bernhard Mitis, Strabag's manager for the

    Belt Conveyor(Installation, Operation & Maintenance)

    INSTALLATION

    OPERATION

    1. Please ensure that the installation is done with necessary

precautions. Measure the belt without creasing, folding or

    straining.

    2. Care should be taken while splicing or vulcanising to ensure that

the joint is made correctly & no horizontal bends are developed

in the belt while making joint out of square.

    3. Belt should be clean and free from oil and grease.

    4. Belt and Conveyor Supports should be in proper alignment.

    5. Power transmission machinery should be checked for proper

    alignment on assembly.

    1. Before starting Conveyor, ensure that the Conveyor structure is

    firm enough to prevent vibration.

    2. Before starting the Conveyor, care to be taken to see that there is

no coal lumps, chips and wood or pieces of iron etc., on the

    carrying and return belt.

    3. After confirming no load operation, feed material on the

    Conveyor Belt, uniformly and carefully.

    4. Quantity of material feed should be controlled. If the material is

fed in excess, the motor of the Conveyor will get overloaded. In

addition, the material on the belt is bound to spill.

    5. At the loading point, skirt boards are used to centralize material,

falling off the belt. The skirts should have proper contact with the

    belt.

    6. Proper belt tension should be maintained by the take-up,

    a) To ensure that minimum tension in the belt is sufficient to

prevent undue sag between idlers. b) To transmit load.

    7. When the Conveyor has to be stopped, please ensure that there

is no material left on the belt.

    Maintenance

The general good maintenance practice is as follows:

    1. Check clearances periodically.

    2. Emphasize visibility in loading and unloading sections and in

    control locations.

    3. Confine the operation of conveyors to authorised employees

    only.

    4. Confine repair functions to trained maintenance employees only.

    5. Repair damaged belts immediately.

    6. Do not permit riding or stepping on conveyor.

    7. Instruct employees using conveyors on the methods of loading

and unloading them and the clearances required for safe

    operation.

    8. In general do not load mechanical equipment beyond its rated

    capacity.

    9. Lubricate through piping where possible. Lubricate conveyor

with oil of proper grade on a regular schedule with definite

responsibility assigned to particular individuals for doing the

    work and making signed reports.

    10. Use lock-outs in fuse boxes during maintenance operation and

have push buttons or cord lines for emergency stops.

    11. Insist on high quality heavy electrical equipments and strict

    adherence to electrical codes.

    12. Check the oil level of gearbox every week and fill it if required.

    13. Initial oil shall be replaced after two months or 1400 running

    hours, whichever is earlier.

    14. Greasing has to be done for all bearing block every month.

    15. Check all nuts and bolts of Head Pulley, Gearbox Motors

    regularly.

    16. Don't stop Belt Conveyor until all material is unloaded.

    Schwing Service Center

    Evolution of service center

In business, the market is changing so rapidly that many of the

products and services that successfully met customer demands and

needs a few years ago, are obsolete today. Only few companies with

proactive powerful leadership monitored the environmental change

and succeeded even during the difficult times and Schwing Stetter

India is one of few such market leaders.

We are one among the few companies who have extended our

various value added customer services across the country directly to

stay close to our customer to support their product. Keeping the

growing trend of Schwing Stetter equipment and non availability of

skilled man power in the industry, Schwing Stetter India has incepted

its state of the art service centers in different states and many are to

    follow.

    Why service center

    Services offered

As Schwing Stetter India understands, effective outsourcing is one of

the most proven and reliable solution to meet the requirement of the

market without increasing the working capital. When the OEM offers

the solution in the form of service center it is obvious that customers

would grab the opportunity with both the hands.

    Periodic maintenance

Rectification of defects from Minor to Major

Rewiring of Electrical system and Rebuilding of Hydraulics

    Repainting of equipment

Mounting of Transit Mixer & Boom Placer

Conversion of flat gate valve to rock valve and vice versa

Conversion of diesel driven to electric driven and vice versa

    Sale of refurbished equipment

Repair of sub assemblies like Hydraulic pump, motor, gearbox

    etc.,

Helps to handle the insurance claims with timely and precise

estimates during / after an accident.

    Understanding the need

    Retrofitment

    Standby

    Specialised Repairs

Conversion: Flat gate valve technology was introduced when the site

requirements for concrete mix was predominant. These pumps were

not able to meet the concrete requirements in high rise constructions.

To overcome these issues, Schwing Stetter India has come up with its

unique option of converting the flat gate valve into rock valve, for its

customer to meet the requirements. The conversion from flat gate to

rock valve came as second lease of life for those who opted to convert

their pumps. We have received accolades from many benefitted

    customer.

    Many customers are benefited

    from the retro fitment solutions

    provided by Schwing Stetter

    India's service center. This made

most of the customer to prefer

    Schwing Stetter equipment.

As the projects are critically time bound, there is no margin for error

for the pump to be under break down even for short duration. On the

other hand if new pump is kept standby, cost rockets sky high.

Schwing Stetter India plays a major role by providing limited warranty

for refurbished concrete pump to help the customer. These pumps

are also exported to the countries like Srilanka and Singapore.

Many specialised machines prior to execution at major projects get

serviced at Schwing Stetter India service center. To mention few,

BP 4000, BP 3500 for Parbati dam project executed by Gammon

India, KVM 42 boom pumps for Petron.

    Customer Testimony

We express our sincere thanks for the

    co-operation SSI have extended during

the execution of conversion of our

concrete pump. We are happy that the

    concrete pump after conversion to

SP1200 is giving very good performance.

Since Feb-2012, it is working at a site

    near Nandura (Vidarbha Maharashtra)

  • Star Batcher

    11

    Tech

Most induction motors are started directly on line, but when very

large motors are started that way, they cause a disturbance of voltage

on the supply lines due to large starting current surges. To limit the

starting current surge, large induction motors are started at reduced

voltage and then have full supply voltage reconnected when they run

up to near rotated speed. Two methods are used for reduction of

starting voltage which is star delta starting and auto transformer

    starting.

This is the reduced voltage starting method. Voltage reduction during

star-delta starting is achieved by physically reconfiguring the motor

windings as illustrated in the figure below. During starting the motor

windings are connected in star configuration and this reduces the

voltage across each winding 3. This also reduces the torque by a

factor of three. After a period of time the winding is reconfigured as

delta and the motor runs normally.

    Working Principle of Star-Delta Starter:

    Star-Delta Starter

Star-Delta starters are probably the most common reduced voltage

starters. They are used in an attempt to reduce the start current

applied to the motor during start as a means of reducing the

disturbances and interference on the electrical supply.

Traditionally in many supply regions, there has been a requirement to

fit a reduced voltage starter on all motors greater than 5HP (4KW).

The Star-Delta (or Wye-Delta) starter is one of the lowest cost

electromechanical reduced voltage starters that can be applied.

    Application of Star-Delta Starter:

    Advantages of Star-Delta starter:

In SCHWING Stetter Batching Plants we use Star-Delta Starter in

most of the Pan Mixers and Twin Shaft Mixers.

The Star-Delta method is usually only applied to low to medium

voltage and light starting torque motors.

    Features of star-delta starting

For low- to high-power three-phase motors.

    Reduced starting current

    Six connection cables

    Reduced starting torque

Current peak on changeover from star to delta

Mechanical load on changeover from star to delta

The operation of the star-delta method is simple and rugged. It is

relatively cheap compared to other reduced voltage methods.

    Good Torque/Current Performance.

During the start it draws twice the current of the full load.

The Star-Delta starter is manufactured from three contactors, a timer

and a thermal overload. The contactors are smaller than the single

contactor used in a Direct on Line starter as they are controlling

winding currents only. The currents through the winding are 1/ 3

(58%) of the current in the line.

There are two contactors that are close during run, often referred to

as the main contractor and the delta contactor. These are AC3 rated at

58% of the current rating of the motor. The third contactor is the star

contactor and that only carries star current while the motor is

connected in star. The current in star is one third of the current in

delta, so this contactor can be AC3 rated at one third (33%) of the

    motor rating.
