5 March Staff and Student Concert

Orientation Extravaganza: Featuring opera and lieder highlights

performed by our distinguished vocal staff Dame Malvina Major

and David Griffiths, with Katherine Austin at the piano, along with

Conservatorium of Music students Nathaniel Smorti (clarinet)

and Matthias Balzat (cello), two of the three finalists in the 2014

NZ National Concerto Competition, performing excerpts from

their competition works in the lead up to the March Grand Finale

in Christchurch.

19 March Hanumi Saxophone Quartet

Four’s Company: The award-winning

Netherlands-based Hanumi Saxophone

Quartet present a potpourri of well-

loved works and new delights including

Debussy’s Claire de Lune and Ligeti’s

Bagatelles.

26 March Jozef Luptak

Slovakian Voice: One of the most

prominent artists on the Slovak musical

scene, soulful cellist Jozef Luptak brings

us a Czech-inspired programme with our

own James Tennant (cello) and Katherine

Austin (piano).

French Connections: Direct from Paris,

New Zealand-born pianist Jeffrey Grice

performs Chopin’s 24 Preludes along

with Gounod/Liszt’s Hymn to St Cecilia

(unknown until premiered by Grice in

Paris in 2000) and jazz-inspired works by

Jenny McLeod and Lucien Johnson.

9 April Student Concert

Top Conservatorium of Music students inspire and delight with solo

and chamber instrumental works and a variety of vocal repertoire.

30 April Barbara Hill and Francis Cowan

Flute Through Three Centuries:

More gorgeous flute playing from

Berlin-based flautist Barbara Hill,

playing Bach, Milhaud, Gaubert and

Piazzolla with New Zealand pianist

Francis Cowan.

7 May James Ioelu, Rosemary Barnes

and Bill Stoneham

The Voices of Men: Bass-baritone James Ioelu and pianist Rosemary

Barnes, along with trumpet player Bill Stoneham, perform three

new song cycles by composer Janet Jennings. The texts, by

New Zealanders Brian Turner, Donald Lea, and Mike Subritzky,

explore the concerns of New Zealand men: living in exile, living

with others, and going to war.

14 May Ke Lin

Virtuoso!: Hailed as Australia’s leading young pianist, multi-award

winning Ke Lin dazzles with Chopin, Liszt and Ravel’s formidable

Gaspard de la Nuit.

21 May New Zealand Chamber Soloists

Something Old, Something New:

Featuring brilliant violinist Amalia Hall,

temporarily replacing sister Lara Hall,

with James Tennant and Katherine

Austin, in the ‘new’ New Zealand

Chamber Soloists, playing Dvořák’s

heart-rending Piano Trio in F minor, and

a great work written for the group.

pianist Roberto Prosseda plays recently discovered works by

16 July Santiago Cañón Valencia

Prodigious Rewards: Familiar to

Waikato audiences from a young age,

international award-winning Colombian

cellist Santiago Cañon Valencia, now

19, returns from the USA and Bogotá

to perform works by Russian greats,

plus some heart-stopping show pieces,

with pianist Katherine Austin.

23 July Marco Mina

Italian Master: Fresh from performances throughout

Italy, UK and Europe, Marco Mina brings us classical

guitar masterworks including Bach’s Suite in C minor

BWV 997 and Paganini’s Grande Sonata in La Maggiore.

30 July Patricia Wright

Diva Delight: The much loved and renowned New Zealand soprano

performs a programme of exquisite lieder by Schubert, Strauss,

Schumann, Wolf and Bridge, accompanied by Katherine Austin.

6 August Antony Peebles

United Kingdom Class: Antony Peebles

has played in 131 different countries with

many leading orchestras. Schubert, Liszt

and Rachmaninov are on the bill for his

Hamilton visit.

13 August Juliana Gondek

American Beauty: Over her 35-year-career Juliana

Gondek has sung with 120 major opera companies

and orchestras worldwide, and made nearly two dozen

recordings, many of which have won international

prizes, including Gramophone’s Record of the Year.

Do not miss this world-renowned mezzo-soprano in

a concert of music from baroque to contemporary,

showcasing both vocal and piano virtuosity.

Contemporary Australia: Violinist

Marianne Rothschild and pianist Glenn

Riddle have been performing together,

recording, and commissioning new

works from some of Australia’s leading

composers for over a decade. They bring us music by Linda Kouvaras

and Stuart Greenbaum.

and Christine Griffi ths

Canzoni per Pranzo: New Zealand baritone

David Griffiths presents a varied programme

of song including works by Tosti and

Debussy’s legendary Baudelaire settings,

accompanied by Christine Griffiths.

Alumni Performance; Edward King and Maria Mo

Award-winning University of Waikato graduates Edward King

(cello) and Maria Mo (piano) return from studies in Europe to

perform music by Schubert, Liszt and Ginastera. King is finalist in

the upcoming Australian Cello Awards taking place in Sydney on

26 March, where he will be accompanied by Mo.

$10 adults, $5 seniors at the door, free for students and

Wednesday 9 April 7pm Opera Showcase – Betly

Voice performance students present Betly by Gaetano Donizetti

(1797-1848). Don’t miss Beverley Pullon, Phillip ‘Akau and Edward

McKnight in this entertaining melodrama with our outstanding

chorus of first and second year singers accompanied by Francis

Cowan. Operatic ensembles presented by third year and graduate

students will complete the programme.

Friday 9 May 7.30pm OKTA

An autumn concert with a very special feature – the premiere of

a new work especially commissioned by OKTA from the doyen of

New Zealand composers, Dame Gillian Whitehead. It is a privilege

to be able to present this newly commissioned trio by Gillian, the

patron of OKTA. An historic occasion not to be missed, and part

of an engrossing programme.

University Chamber Orchestra Concert Winter Concert

The 2014 winter concert includes stunning music from the romantic

repertoire; Schumann’s Cello Concerto featuring soloist specialisation

cellist Catherine Kwak, Serenade for Strings by Tchaikovsky led by

Amalia Hall, and Dvořák’s mighty ‘New World’ symphony.

Concerto Competition Preliminaries

University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music students perform

a variety of concerto movements in this exciting preliminary round

of the competition. Three finalists will be chosen to play their full

concerto in the 25 July final with the winner going on to tour with

Opus orchestra in September.

The annual Opera Aria contest promises to be another spectacle

of superb music and singing. With the University vocal programme

larger than ever, this competition is sure to be very keenly contented.

OPERA The White Lady

Dr John Gallagher Concert Chamber,

Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the University

of Waikato, the Conservatorium of Music is set to stage a new

production of The White Lady. This opera by David Griffiths, with

libretto by Lynn John, tells the story of two star struck students

amidst the turmoil and intrigue of downtown Auckland, centred

around the iconic White Lady takeaway caravan. This fully-staged

spectacle will feature University vocal students, coached by our

special guest world-renowned opera singer Juliana Gondek, and

the University Orchestra conducted by our own James Tennant.

Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment, this will be a

must-see!

City with the New Zealand String Quartet

Members of the New Zealand String Quartet address Conservatorium

of Music composition students on their experiences working with

the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra. This ground-breaking project

sees the FCCO join together with the New Zealand String Quartet for

works written especially for them all, by Chinese and New Zealand

composers, for instruments old and new, Western and Chinese.

The New Zealand String Quartet and Forbidden City Chamber

Orchestra are touring the country in Tales from the Forbidden City

Vocal Masterclasses with Juliana Gondek

American opera singer and teacher Juliana Gondek presents

two masterclasses for Conservatorium of Music vocal students.

Throughout her 35-year career Gondek has sung on the world’s

most celebrated stages, including such famed venues as Carnegie

Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and Milan’s La Scala. A specialist in

Baroque, Mozart, Bel Canto, Verdi, Strauss, Spanish, Polish, and

contemporary repertoire, Gondek has taught as Professor of Voice

and Opera at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music since 1997.

Interpretation Through Improvisation – Classical

Improvisation and its Application in Performance

After his extraordinary classes in 2013,

Dr David Dolan returns to work with

Conservatorium of Music students over four

days. One of the pre-eminent music educators

in the world, Dr Dolan will work with singers,

pianists, string and wind players, teaching

the lost art of classical improvisation. Dr

Dolan teaches at Julliard USA, Guildhall

London, Yehudi Menuhin School and the Paris

Conservatoire, to name a few.

this masterclass for Conservatorium of Music

piano students. An active and outstanding

performer, Glenn Riddle is considered one of

Australia’s leading inspirational mentors of

young pianists.

Accelerando Piano Masterclass with Glenn Riddle

For all piano teachers and secondary school pianists; an interactive

session where aspects of technical development, repertoire

building, sight-reading skills, exam preparation, and general musical

development will be discussed.

In particular, teachers will be introduced to a wide range of new

and exciting teaching repertoire, including a short introduction to

selected works by Australian composers that will prove useful both

in building technique and motivating students.
