Message from the Artistic and ExecutiveDirector on behalf of the President, Chairman,and Board of Directors – Vancouver KiwanisMusic Festivals Society (VKMFS)Welcome to the 95th year of ‘Inspiring MusicalExcellence!’Congratulations to everyone involved for

their accomplishments and commitment. Theresults of many hours of dedicated practice, discipline, and focus will beshowcased by the performers and leaders at this year’s Band and OrchestraFestival. Our 2018 adjudicators are Dr. Michael Keddy, Dr. Chee Meng Low, Dr.

Scott MacLennan, and Dr. Colleen Richardson. They will provide valuablefeedback, wisdom, and encouragement to over 1600 young musicians. Weinvite you to read more about our adjudicators’ lifelong devotion to musiceducation in the following pages of your program book. The supporters and partners of the VKMFS have created important

platforms needed to provide our youth with meaningful opportunities toadvance their musical knowledge and abilities. The continuing goal is toinspire the next generation of students to make music and be involved in thecommunity.I am honoured to be a part of this 95 year history and grateful to everyone

Scholarships and BursariesThe following scholarships will be awarded at this year’s Vancouver KiwanisConcert Band & Orchestra Festival:• Dal Richards Scholarship for the Best BC Concert Band at the

Festival – $500;• Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals Scholarship to be awarded to the

most promising Band or Orchestra –$100; and• Vancouver Community College entrance scholarships – $500 x 2.The Festival also recommends groups to MusicFest.

VCC Music Entrance ScholarshipVancouver Community College is offering an EntranceScholarship for 2018-2019. At the discretion ofadjudicators, this award may be offered to up to twoindividuals ($500 each) in each instrumental categorywho intend to pursue post-secondary music studies

within the next two years. Scholarship will be activated upon successfulaudition and subsequent enrolment in the VCC Music program.

Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals Philosophy• To provide a festival that is student and director oriented;• To operate a festival that is musically and educationally focused;• To provide an environment and atmosphere for an exchange of musicperformance, listening, sharing and working together;

• To provide excellent performance examples which groups may strive toemulate.

Process and Evaluation• Each group will perform repertoire of the director’s choice, performing amaximum of three selections.

• Music should represent the level and abilities of the group and shouldreflect the process of quality music education.

• All groups will be performing to a standard of excellence. A detaileddescriptor evaluation sheet shall be used by the adjudicators to indicatethe group’s performance. Each group will receive a certificate ofperformance/participation.

• Each group will receive a recorded and written evaluation and a clinicwith one of the adjudicators.

Dr. Michael KeddyDr. Michael Keddy is Music Director of the University ofVictoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds, Music Directorof the Greater Victoria Concert Band (Senior level),Assistant Conductor of the University of Victoria WindSymphony, and has been a guest conductor of the CivicOrchestra of Victoria. He currently teaches MusicEducation and Post-Degree Professional Programcourses at the University of Victoria, where he recentlycompleted his PhD in Educational Studies (Music

Education/Conducting) under the supervision of Dr. Gerald King. Prior tothis, Dr. Keddy completed a Master’s Degree (Wind Conducting) with Dr.Dale Lonis at the University of Manitoba, and was Head of Performing Artsat Parry Sound High School in Parry Sound, Ontario. Ensembles under hisdirection have consistently been praised for their exceptional musicality.Dr. Keddy completed the Graduate Diploma in Conducting from the

University of Calgary, conducted and performed in Europe as AssociateConductor (Concert Band) and Music Director (Jazz Band) of the OntarioYouth Concert Band, and has also held the responsibility of Music Directorand Music Education Clinician for the Senior Band component at CampMusical d’Asbestos in Asbestos, Québec. He has adjudicated and providednumerous music education and percussion clinics at many festivals andvenues throughout Canada.As a percussionist, Dr. Keddy taught as a member of the faculty at the

University of Manitoba and performed in a variety of venues, from soloperformer at Buckingham Palace to Symphony Orchestras to WorldChampion Drum and Bugle Corps.

Dr. Chee Meng LowAn active performer and educator, Chee Meng Low isAssistant Professor of Music at the University ofLethbridge, where he conducts the University ofLethbridge Wind Orchestra, teaches saxophoneperformance, conducting and musicianship skills. He isalso involved with the Edmonton Saxophone Quartet, Uof L Faculty Wind Sextet, Symphonic Winds of NSOMalaysia, and has performed as a soloist and chambermusician in North America, Europe and Asia.

During 2007-2010, Chee Meng served as the Assistant Communicationsand Planning Manager for the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, developingthe education and outreach programs, as well as implementing the dailyoperations of the orchestra. He also served as one of the saxophoneinstructors for the College of Music, Mahidol University, coaching privatelessons, saxophone quartet and saxophone ensemble and serving theCollege as assistant to the Deputy Director for Academic and ResearchAffairs.A recipient of the University of Alberta FS Chia Doctoral Scholarship,

Chee Meng holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Alberta,under the guidance of William H. Street (saxophone) and Dennis Prime(conducting). While working on his degree, Chee Meng taught BandTechnique and Aural Skills courses at the University of Alberta and served asthe Graduate Teaching Assistant for the saxophone ensemble, symphonicwind ensemble, and concert band.Chee Meng was a member of the International Committee, World

Saxophone Congress (2006-2009), regional representative of the Asia PacificBand Directors’ Association (2007-2010), and is a current member of theNorth American Saxophone Alliance and Alberta Band Association.

Dr. Scott MacLennan Dr. Scott MacLennan is the Music Director of theKwantlen Polytechnic University Wind Symphony andDirector of Bands at the Byng Arts Academy in thePerforming and Visual Arts, in Vancouver. Dr.MacLennan holds a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor ofEducation from the University of British Columbiaalong with a Master of Music in Conducting (WindBand) from Sam Houston State University, Texas. Hehas studied conducting with Ken Hsieh, Morihiro

Okabe, and Wayne Toews and participated in numerous conducting masterclasses given by Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Anthony Maiello, Ralph Hultgren, andRobert Ponto. Dr. MacLennan received his Ph.D. from the University ofBritish Columbia where his research involved studying students’conceptions of ancillary movements (physical movements not necessary inthe production of sound) in instrumental music performance.As well, Dr. MacLennan has been on faculty at the University of British

Columbia as a sessional lecturer teaching conducting and rehearsaltechniques. He has guest conducted the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestraand the Saskatchewan Honour Orchestra at the Saskatchewan MusicEducators’ Association’s conference 2014, as well as being in demand as aguest clinician/conductor/adjudicator with various schools in BC.Since 1997, Dr. MacLennan has been Music Director at the Byng Arts

Academy in the Performing and Visual Arts. He has conducted hisaward-winning ensembles in various locations throughout Great Britain,France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, China, the United States, andCanada. His ensembles have won Gold and Superior grades from everyprovincial and national festival that they have entered since 2002 and haveperformed in such notable venues as Carnegie Hall, New York, USA, andSanta Maria della Pieta (Vivaldi’s Church) in Venice, Italy.From 2006 - 2008, Dr. MacLennan was hired by the Vancouver Symphony

Orchestra to edit and draft curriculum for their VSO Connects (Secondary)program. In October 2006, he chaired the BC Music Educator’sAssociation’s Conference Pulse 2006 and currently sits as a board memberof the Chamber Music in the Schools Society, BC Band Association, and theVancouver School Music Teachers’ Association.

Dr. Colleen RichardsonDr. Colleen Richardson is Coordinator of Bands, directsthe Wind Ensemble, and teaches undergraduate andgraduate courses in conducting and instrumental musiceducation at Western University in London, Ontario. Incollaboration with Dr. Kevin Watson, she administratesthe Western Young Winds program, a community bandfor students in grades six to nine, and supervises theundergraduate music education majors selected to

rehearse and conduct the ensemble. Prior to her appointment at Western,Dr. Richardson was an Assistant Professor of Music Education and the WindEnsemble Director at Converse College in South Carolina.Besides being active as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor

nationally, Dr. Richardson has guest conducted or presented her research inIreland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan,Wales, and the US. Her research focuses on wind literature, conductingpedagogy, and rehearsal techniques. Publications include articles for theCanadian Winds, and the Canadian Music Educator Journal, as well as multiplestudy guides for the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series.Recently, Dr. Richardson produced and edited the Hunsberger DVD withinGIA’s DVD set entitled Three Icons: Frank Battisti, Donald Hunsberger, and H.Robert Reynolds. Under her direction, the Western University Wind Ensemblehas produced two CDs, Apparitions (Albany Records, 2011) and Explorations(Mark Records, 2016); both recordings are available through iTunes andAmazon.com.A native of Winnipeg, Dr. Richardson graduated from Brandon University

(BMus Ed), the University of Calgary (Wind Conducting Diploma, MMusConducting), and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory ofMusic (DMA Wind Conducting). Her primary conducting teachers havebeen Rodney Winther and Glenn Price. However, she has also hadopportunities to study with other well respected composers and conductors,including Craig Kirchhoff, Karel Husa, Warren Benson, David Maslanka,Eugene Corporon, Mallory Thompson, Robert Reynolds, and Jerry Junkin. While in Cincinnati completing her doctorate, Dr. Richardson co-directed

the Tri-State Chamber Players, as well as served as the Music Director andConductor of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble. Prior to her graduatestudies, she taught general, choral, and instrumental music in the Canadianschool system for 14 years.
