The challenge was to maintain safety in the old building’s hazardous natural gas environment (CLASS 1 Division 1 and Division 2 Group D) while avoiding unnecessary Emergency Shutdown (ESD). New Frontier Technologies (NFT) is designing a costeffective, limited automation solution which will directly address the problem. The addition of automatic engine load valve control will let an operator (or the system acting automatically) shut down/blow down an individual engine when a leak is detected, isolating the problem before an ESD is triggered. Gas Control will be able to initiate unit shut down if necessary. The new system will also support semiautomated engine startup from a local PLC panel to quickly bring an engine back on line when the problem is cleared. The operator will still manually set engine speed and loading. The customer is modifying the safety system to support Limited Local Area Shutdown (LASD) of the old building. If the building percent lower explosive limit (%LEL) setpoint is exceeded, the LASD is triggered. The station stays on line and continues to operate with the main engines. Only if the High %LEL condition persists for a predetermined time is a full ESD performed. The NFT team is basing the automation architecture on a CTI PLC and a Parker CTC HMI, a combination familiar to the company’s personnel. To meet space constraints and lower project cost they designed the system to control all three engines from the single PLC. This major pipeline operator wanted to retain the compression capacity of three manually operated engines located in a separate building from the newer,automated 8engine facility. The challenge was to maintain safety in the old building’s hazardous natural gas environment (CLASS 1 Division 1 and Division2 Group D) while avoiding unnecessary Emergency Shutdown (ESD).

New Frontier Technologies (NFT) is designing a costeffective, limited automation solution which will directly address the problem. The addition of automaticengine load valve control will let an operator (or the system acting automatically) shut down/blow down an individual engine when a leak is detected, isolatingthe problem before an ESD is triggered. Gas Control will be able to initiate unit shut down if necessary.

The new system will also support semiautomated engine startup from alocal PLC panel to quickly bring an engine back on line when the problem iscleared. The operator will still manually set engine speed and loading.

The customer is modifying the safety system to support Limited Local AreaShutdown (LASD) of the old building. If the building percent lower explosivelimit (%LEL) setpoint is exceeded, the LASD is triggered.  The station stayson line and continues to operate with the main engines.  Only if the High%LEL condition persists for a predetermined time is a full ESD performed.

The NFT team is basing the automation architecture on a CTI PLC and aParker CTC HMI, a combination familiar to the company’s personnel.

To meet space constraints and lower project cost they designed the systemto control all three engines from the single PLC.
