CELLOBOND Phenolic Resins for the Manufacture of Fire Safe Composite Materials

CELLOBOND resin systems are part of Hexion's Bakelite® family of phenolic resins. These resins are designed to be used in combination with PHENCAT Catalysts for the cost-effective manu-facture of composites by conventional processes where a high degree of fire safety, excellent mechanical properties or resistance to high temperatures is required. They are particularly suited to structural and decorative applications in the rail, marine, offshore and construc-tion industries.

The wide variety of catalyst systems and finishing options that Hexion provides offers unrivalled performance, processing options and design flexibil-ity. Where aesthetics are important, an in-mold phenolic surface paste primer is available for post-painting operations; additionally, decorative films or modi-fied gel coat systems can be used.

CELLOBOND Resin and PHENCAT Catalyst Systems include resins and catalysts to suit most common com-posite processing techniques.

Resins

Availability

Resins are normally supplied in stan-dard 200 liter steel drums containing 220 kg net, and 1,000 liter IBCs (inter-mediate bulk containers) containing 1,220 kg net.

Selection of Resin and Catalyst System

For guidance, the table below illustrates the preferred resin / catalyst combina-tions for a variety of processes.

Storage

Acid-cured resins have a shelf life of 2 months from the date of delivery when stored at 20 °C, and heat-cured resins have a shelf life of 1 month. To minimize ageing effects, drums should be stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight. The shelf life may be extended by stor-age at lower temperatures. Resins may be stored at -18 °C for periods of up to 6 months.

Catalysts

Surface Paste

Three catalysts are offered for use with CELLOBOND resins, these are PHENCAT 10, PHENCAT 15 and PHEN-CAT 382 Catalysts.

PHENCAT 10 Catalyst is a general-purpose catalyst for processes such as contact molding.

PHENCAT 15 Catalyst is a fast action catalyst specifically designed for resin injection and spray applications where pot life is of lesser importance.

CELLOBOND thixotropic phenolic sur-face paste improves moldings’ surface finish direct from the mold. This mate-rial is intended primarily for overcoating with a suitable paint system such as the fire retardant, low smoke systems available, for example, from Trimite, Mankieweitz or DuPont.

These catalysts are blends of organic and inorganic acids and therefore must be handled with care. Reference should be made to the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheets.

PHENCAT 382 Catalyst is a delayed-action catalyst that is activated at low temperatures, typically 60 – 80 °C. It offers up to a fourfold increase in pot life and reduced exotherm risk in isothermal RTM or press processes.

The choice of catalyst depends upon the processing characteristics required. The properties of each catalyst are as follows:

Availability and Storage

Surface paste is supplied in 25 liter open-topped steel drums containing 25 kg net. Phenolic paste has an ex-pected working life of 2 months when stored at 20 °C. To minimize ageing effects, kegs should be stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Usable working life may be extended by storage at reduced temperatures. Surface paste should not be frozen.

Availability

PHENCAT Catalysts are supplied in thermoplastic kegs or drums containing 25 kg net.

All catalysts are normally available from stock.

Storage

PHENCAT Catalysts have a shelf life of at least 12 months if stored in a cool, dry place. They should not be allowed to freeze.
