Owego Students Learn about Fiber and Weaving

Students in Preschool through Grade

6 at Zion Lutheran School in Owego

recently participated in a New York Ag-

riculture in the Classroom program relat-

ed to fiber and weaving. The mission of the Agriculture in the

Classroom program is to foster aware-

ness, understanding and appreciation of

how food, fiber and natural resources are

produced. The Agriculture in the Class-

room program provided the Weaving the

Rainbow by George Ella Lyon, as well

as some wool.

In the book the shepherd takes care of

her flock and turns the freshly shorn,

lustrous white wool into a weaving pro-

ject. The shepherd dyes, cards, spins, and weaves the wool to create a beauti-

ful woven scene of her sheep grazing in

the pasture. After a volunteer read the

story aloud, students worked with wool

with wool by dyeing, carding, spinning,

and weaving yarn on a small hand loom.

Katie and Daniel Popp of the Hoof and

Claw 4-H Club of Tioga County provid-

ed additional fiber including wool from

Finnsheep, Rommney, and Jacob sheep,

mohair from Angora and cashmere from Myotonic goats. Having an assortment

of fiber from different animals enabled

students to experience the similarities

and differences between different types

of fiber.

The students learned where fiber

comes from and the steps required to

turn wool into yarn in every color of the

rainbow. Some of the students felted

some of the dyed wool to make multi-

colored marbles. To prepare their fiber

for weaving projects, the students used drum and hand carders, a spinning

wheel, drop spindles, and a yarn ball

winder. Each student learned how to

warp a loom by wrapping yarn around the pegs of a small handmade looms.

Then they made the weft by weaving

across interlacing their multi-colored

yarn through the warp stands of yarn.

At the conclusion of the fiber and

weaving project, some of Daniel and

Katie Popp's 4-H animals visited Zion

Lutheran School. The students enjoyed

meeting a Myotonic goat, as well as a

Finnsheep ewe, and her one-month-old

lamb. Visit the Agriculture in the class-

room website, www.agclassroom.org/ny for more information and resources.

Preschoolers at Zion Lutheran proudly display the fiber they dyed with Kool-Aid with D’Amone Popp, Agriculture in the Classroom volunteer.

Kindergartener Cooper Dember shows his fiber marble that he felted.

St. Patrick’s School

A Farewell Celebration on June 5 School open for tours - all are welcome to attend

After more than 150 years of

educating the children of Tioga County,

St. Patrick’s School on Front Street in

Owego will permanently close its doors

in June. The community, alumni, family, and friends are invited to an evening of

special activities to celebrate St.

Patrick’s School.

The evening will begin at 6:00 pm

with a prayer service for anyone that

would like to attend. At 6:30 pm, the

school will be open for tours, food,

music, and a special art show created by

the students.

Alumni are especially encouraged to

attend the event and walk through their former classrooms, reminisce, meet

other alumni, share memories, and say

farewell to their alma mater.

For more information on the event,

contact the school at 687-1770.

The first thing that comes to mind

when we see the words “healthy salad,”

is lettuce. Don’t get me wrong I love a

fresh garden salad any day of the week.

Now that we are getting into the spring season, I just would like to remind you

about some of the other choices for salad

other than lettuce. It’s really fun once

you start making healthier choices with

your diet and it doesn’t have to be blasé

and boring. It can actually be colorful

and tasty.

For instance, we could take a basic

black bean and corn salad recipe and

create a very eye appealing, tasty dish by

adding Spanish olives, chickpeas,

chopped tomatoes, green onions or green bell pepper and red bell pepper and a

little chopped cilantro. Now mix in a

zesty lemon or lime dressing and you

have a beautiful salad that has been

kicked up a notch. That is just one ex-

ample out of many.

Here are some more healthy ingredi-

ents that could come to mind the next

time you think salad: chicken, barley,

tuna, apple, pineapple, cranberry, cab-

bage, pasta, cucumber, tomato, green

beans, broccoli, kale, crab, couscous,

strawberry, orange, quinoa, potato, rice,

avocado, beets, beans, steak, shrimp,

pear, pomegranate, mango, celery and asparagus. Wow! What a list and we are

just getting started. I hope I have helped

you expand your salad horizons.

Here is a quick and easy recipe for

Fruit Salad that I will share with you.

This is one of my favorite recipes for a

healthy breakfast.

Nick’s Fruit Salad

1/2 cup fresh pineapple chunks

1/2 cup fresh banana, sliced 1/4 cup red seedless grapes

1/4 cup fresh strawberries, cleaned and

cut in half

1 kiwi, peeled and sliced

1 tablespoon shredded coconut

Mix fruit in bowl and sprinkle with

coconut. Enjoy!

The Democratic Women of Tioga

County will hold a screening and

discussion of the Independent Spirit

Award winning documentary film “The

Invisible War” at the Treadway Inn in Owego on Thursday, May 7, 6:00 to

9:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and available

through The DWTC Facebook page.

The Invisible War is a

groundbreaking investigation into one of

America's most disturbing secrets.

Sexual assault in the military has reached epidemic levels; the Department

of Defense estimates that there were

19,000 violent sexual assaults in 2011

alone. Possibly more horrific is the utter

lack of institutional support that causes

the vast majority of victims to remain

silent. Women and men in the military

who report their attacks are subjected to

victim-blaming and backlash tactics

including demotions in rank, discharges,

and even retaliatory reports filed against

them. The film, made by Kirby Dick and

Amy Ziering portrays the accounts of

several young veterans who were

sexually assaulted during their time in

the military. Though each story is

different, they all contain the common

threads of isolation, lack of support, and

absence of justice. The most commonly

expressed sentiment is the feeling that

they were violated a second time by the

system they believed to be put in place to protect them.

Due in part to the release of this film

in 2012, things are beginning to change.

Two days after viewing “The Invisible

War,” then Secretary of Defense Leon

Panetta issued a directive that requires

sexual assault cases to be handled by

senior officers ranked Colonel or higher.

He attributes this decision directly to his

viewing of this film. There's also a push

to remove the investigative process from

the military entirely, but this idea has been met with considerable resistance.

The event begins at 6:00 on Thursday

May 7. After viewing the film, an open

forum will offer the opportunity to

express thoughts, feelings, ideas, and

personal experiences, and to hear the

same from other members of the

community. Light refreshments will be

provided. To buy tickets, follow the link

at the Democratic Women of Tioga

County Facebook page. For more information call (607) 765-

The day’s events included a wreath laying ceremony in honor of CNYFA hose racing scorekeeper Chris-sie Hughes who unexpectedly passed away earlier this year and all firefighter spouses at the Baker Firemen’s Foun-tain; the association’s spring meeting held at OFD’s new training facility; and a barbeque put on by the Owego Hose Team. More than 50 members of the associ-ation participated in the meeting from all corners of Central New York. CNYFA represents firefighters and departments in 20 counties including Broome, Cayu-ga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Del-aware, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Otsego, Schoharie,

Tioga Downs’ Exciting Summer Concerts

Tioga Downs in Nichols is excited to announce a series of five star-studded summer concerts coming to the complex this year. Guests of all ages are invited to attend the musical performances by a variety of rock and roll and country mu-sic artists. Rock legend Chubby Checker kicks off the sum-mer concert series on May 30. Tick-ets are already on sale for this show, and they are going fast. Perhaps best known for his hit song from the 1950’s, The Twist, Chubby Checkers has a talent for getting people on their feet and onto the dance floor. He has continued to produce hit songs in the decades that followed with a recent ballad Changes credited to him in 2013. Tickets range in price from $20 to $30. Tickets for the shows in the summer concert series are on sale at all Ticket-master locations and www.ticketmaster.com. Next up on the summer schedule is Sara Evans, sponsored by Tioga State Bank, on Thursday, July 2. Sara Evans fans will recognize hit songs such as Born to Fly and Stronger. She has re-leased eight studio albums in her career, including two just last year. Tickets range in price from $25 to $45. On Saturday, July 25, Tioga Downs hosts Hippiefest 2015. The evening fea-tures the musical stylings of several sea-soned rock and roll bands—Felix Cava-liere’s Rascals, Lovin’ Spoonful, Rick Derringer and Badfinger. Tickets range

in price from $25 to $45. A special concert featuring Lee Greenwood is set for Saturday, August 15. All tickets are $15, and proceeds will benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Sup-port Group. “It just seems fitting to plan an even-ing to support veterans around Lee Greenwood, a class act and a patriot,” said Jeff Gural, Owner of Tioga Downs. “We are so pleased to further our com-mitment to those who have served our country. In fact, we hope to be able to welcome and honor many veterans that night.” The summer concert series culmi-nates with BIG & Rich with Cowboy Troy on Sunday, September 6. The country music duo Big and Rich is com-posed of Big Kenny and John Rich, both of whom are songwriters, vocalists and guitarists. Tickets for this country music concert range from $35 to $55. All concerts, except Hippiefest 2015, will begin at 8:00 pm. Hippiefest is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm. All shows take place outside, regardless of rain. Tioga Downs offers live harness racing, video lottery terminals, video poker and electronic roulette. A variety of eateries are also part of the entertain-ment complex. Jeff Gural owns Tioga Downs in Nichols, and Vernon Downs in Vernon, NY. Gural is in the process of preparing a new proposal to apply for the state’s final full gaming license. Once awarded, Tioga Downs will expand its facility and workforce to accommodate live casino gaming. In the last decade, Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs have created more than 700 family-sustaining jobs. Going Solar

Saturday, April 18, was a beautiful

day for the Owego-Apalachin Solar

Tour, part of Southern Tier Solar Work’s

(STSW) effort to educate the public on

where solar energy stands today and provide the opportunity to join a ten-

week program aimed to minimize the

cost for all.

Four families generously offered to

share with the community how their

solar systems work, the clean energy

they produce, the cost savings they cre-

ate, and other details of their experiences

thus far. Visitors were treated to the sur-

prise of witnessing an operating wind

turbine and let’s not forget the chickens,

horses, and gorgeous rolling country-side!

Liz and Joe Rowland have a 3.2 kilo-

watt (kW) solar electric system and a 10

kW wind turbine. These two systems

provide power for their home and elec-

tric car, as well as Joe’s honey business.

They use their electric car for honey

deliveries and commuting 30 miles to

work.

While the Rowlands have had their

solar panels installed a decade ago, the other three homes on the tour, owned by

the Robinson, Frisbie, and Bocek fami-

lies, solarized their homes just last year.

All are happy with their systems and

excited to share what they have learned

with others in their communities. Rick

Gridley, a Vestal resident and visitor on

the tour, said, “I am most impressed with

the amount of CO2 reduced [by going

solar].” Cost savings was big on all of

the visitors’ minds and free solar elec-

tricity within just a few years was ap-

pealing.

STSW’s 2014 pilot program in

Broome and Tioga Counties installed 386 kWs of solar photovoltaic, surpas-

sing its goal and thereby enabling cus-

tomers to get the lowest price on their

installations. This year’s campaign,

called Solarize Southern Tier East, con-

tinues to include Broome and Tioga

while adding Delaware, Otsego, and

Chenango Counties to the campaign.

STSW has contracted four companies to

complete installations: ETM and Taitem,

which have joined together for this pro-

ject, Renovus, and Direct Energy Solar.

Community Meetings to educate the

public on solar energy will continue un-

til early June, at which time the cam-

paign will end and installations will

begin. For more information, go to the

STSW website at

www.southerntiersolarworks.org , where

a list of events and other details can be

found, or call Program Manager Adam

Flint at 607-873-9220.

Taking Control of Our Energy Future Have you taken all the steps you can to reduce your energy use? Have you heard about the new low temperature air source heat pumps that can efficiently heat your home when it is brutally cold outside and cool your home in the heat of summer? The public will have oppor-tunity to learn and have their questions answered by a team of home energy experts on Wednesday, May 13 7 pm at the Tioga County Office Building, 56

Main Street. Dr. Gay Canough of ETM Solar Works, Pat Dundon, of Insulation Man, and Joe Keyes of Heat-Tek are pleased to present this free program sponsored by RAFT - Residents Allied for the Future of Tioga.
