Community Outreach Activity Report: July 2011 – June 2012
Community activities related to cancer screening and prevention
Ingalls carefully follows evidence-based screening guidelines as outlined by the National
Comprehensive Network, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American
Cancer Society.
Ingalls offers a variety of free on-line risk assessments, several of which are specific to
cancer risks, and the others include risk factors that are often related. Community residents
are encouraged to take multiple risk quizzes, which offer varying degrees of free follow-up
testing or professional consultations depending on the level of risk identified.
For example, as part of the ColonCancerAware, we offer free hemoccult kits, with a follow
up to the patient and physician by the cancer nurse navigator for any positive results.
For the LungCancerAware, patients are offered free spirometry to evaluate lung function, and
if they meet the screening criteria, they are also encouraged to participate in our Lungs for
Life low dose CT screening. If the result indicates the need for further diagnostics, the nurse
navigator follows up with the patient and the physician to provide assistance to obtain a
diagnosis and treatment plan.
For the BreastCancerAware and the ProstateCancerAware, patients at risk are counseled by a
nurse navigator and are referred to their physicians for follow-up.
In all cases, a mechanism is in place through our Care Connection Referral Service to
connect a patient with a primary care physician if they do not have a doctor with whom to
follow-up.
Ingalls annual Family Health Fair, conducted in conjunction with the Homewood Rotary
Club, is the single largest community education and screening event, reaching a total over
about 1,000 each year. The health fair offers a number of educational displays, and free
cancer screenings include clinical breast exams, skin cancer screenings and hemoccult kits.
Ingalls Wellness Center in Homewood offers a variety of risk reduction programs, including
ongoing nutrition and weight management for both adults and children, exercising safely
with chronic illnesses, pulmonary fitness and smoking cessation.
Through a partnership with the Cancer Support Center, Ingalls provides speakers twice
monthly that address topics including screening and lifestyle modification. Ingalls also hosts
two locations for the UsTOO prostate cancer support group in Harvey and Mokena.
Also, a partnership with the American Cancer Society helps our patients to obtain cancer
screenings for colon cancer and breast cancer.
