Peacefully Program Notes

Peacefully was commissioned by the Bethel College Concert Choir as part of a residency around their Greer Lectureship in the Arts (2010). The text is my own resonance with the Tao te Ching, a monumental and important work of the utmost simplicity and wisdom: a source of comfort and direction in a complicated technological time that often seems out of control. The Tao speaks to the heart of our matter, and in this point in my life, that heart is peace. I learned as a child in the Mennonite Church, and as a student of both music and theology at Bethel College that peace is a place of great tranquility-a place of active participation rather than passive complacency, and a way to seek. Much has intervened in between now and then, but as life circles back on itself, it settles into a wisdom born of these roots untarnished even by long decades of detour. And so it is with great pleasure that I return to this place of peace in both a personal and musical way and that Bethel College is again a part of that space. Special thanks to the many that guided me during my first residency at Bethel (1980-84) and to those whom I am so grateful to be collaborating with 30 years later!

Biography

Paul Rudy (1962) is a life-long student whose music encompasses desert to kitchen, inside to outback, and chamber/orchestral. A fascination with sound has led from instrumental works to radio programs in London and Aspen Colorado, to interactive, installation, and cinematic works, with, and without visuals. Rudy has received awards from the Guggenheim (2008), Fulbright (1997) and Wurlitzer Foundations (2007 and 2009), Sounds Electric ’07 Competition (1st Prize), Bourges Electroacoustic Music Competition (including a 2008 commission), EMS (Sweden 1st Prize), Citta di Udine (Prize ex aequo), SEAMUS, Meet the Composer, the American Composer’s Forum, SCI, National Music Teacher’s Association and the Missouri Music Teacher’s Association. He promotes the music of living composers by curating concerts Internationally and lectures widely on the analysis of non-notated sonic art, sound in film and timbral practice. He teaches at the University of Missouri at Kansas City where he received the 2008 Kauffman Award for Artistic Excellence. He has an avid interest in bicycling, hiking, camping, and mountaineering. In 1994 he completed the Colorado Grand Slam after climbing all 54 of Colorado's 14,000 ft peaks and still hopes some day to go above 20,000 ft. Rudy’s CD Series 2012 Stories are available online at iTunes. Visit: www.paulrudy.com for more information.

*The A can be nested in the alto from the beginning by a single or few singers speaking on A, or given via tuning fork or pitch pipe softly in the middle of the aleatoric "speak" section. Regardless,it should emerge imperceptibly at first and grow into the whole chorus.
