This is an uptempo flagwaver, which features solos for 1st AltoSaxophone, 2nd Trumpet and piano, as well as a saxophone soli andan ensemble chorus which moves from a whisper to a roar.

Work to have your ensemble achieve a relaxed, swinging, up tempogroove. It is suggested that the rhythm section spends some timerehearsing without the horns. The drummer should play the high hatwith conviction for a loud “chick” sound on beats 2 and 4. The bassistshould lock in with the drummer’s ride cymbal. It is not necessary tohave the drummer play the bass drum on every beat, and discourageyour drummer from playing the bass drum only on beats 1 and 3 as thiswill make it sound as if the groove is in two rather than a fast four.

With the horn players, work for ensemble precision. Agreement on notelengths and releases will enhance your performance. Also, emphasizedynamic contrasts. This piece includes passages at all dynamic levels,from as soft to as loud as the band can play. Emphasizing dynamicswill showcase the musicality of your group.

Gregory W. Yasinitsky, Regents Professor of Music at Washington StateUniversity, has an international reputation as a composer, arranger and saxo-phonist. He is the winner of the American Prize in Composition and is a memberof the Board of Directors for the Jazz Education Network. Additionally, Yasinitskyis a member of the Washington State Music Educators Hall of Fame and is arecipient of the WSU Eminent Faculty Award, WSU’s top award for faculty.Yasinitsky is a recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment forthe Arts, The Commission Project, Artist Trust and ASCAP. He has written musicespecially for David Sanborn, Clark Terry, Dave Liebman and the USAF "Airmenof Note" big band.
