NEED FOR SOUND CAREER PLANNINGAMONG STUDENTS

K.R.M. KISHORE KUMAR, I.P.S.,Inspector General of Police, Hyderabad, A.P.

The students in India are told that they should complete theirstudies successfully and then compete for a job. Only those whowant to take to engineering or medicine studies try hard duringtheir intermediate education period. Others continue their studies. Those who could not make up to engineering or medical studiesalso continue their studies without further plans, brooding overtheir failure. Some students join a professional course to fulfil thewishes of his father or grandmother.

But when one completes the studies successfully, he findsthat there are written tests, interviews, group discussions etc. In fact the selection for apost or job is made as per sound personnel management principles. The knowledge, skillsand attitudes required for each job is analysed and outlined. Based on this a scheme ofselection is drawn up. This being so, every student shall develop required knowledge, skills and attitudes for the job/post he aspires for. This is the only scientific way.

For this one should plan early in his life. It could be started when one is studying ninth or tenthstandard. During those periods of general education the student shall identify his areas of interest. Heshould know whether science subject interests him or he finds commercial knowledge interesting. Heshould also try to get information on various careers in engineering, technology, management, civilservice, industry etc. Particularly during intermediate education one can consult career magazines.Various magazines dealing with career guidance like Competition Refresher, Competition SuccessReview, Competition Master etc. are available. Government of India is also publishing EmploymentNews weekly regularly. Employment News gives full information on jobs under Govt. of India and itsinstitutions.

One can also meet persons already in the field which one wants to choose and evaluate. Forexample, one can meet a Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant, Company Secretary, Bank Manager,Police Officers, Administrators, Industrialists etc. and form his opinion. One can also visit Polytechnics,I.T.I.s and other similar institutions and know various courses offered.

Page 13: Colour Oct 2012kuso.co.in/kuso_files/oct12.pdfVoice of KUSO 5 'KUSO' GUEST HOUSE (Sponsored by K.L.N. MEMORIAL POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE, Madurai) We are glad to announce that the 'KUSO

Voice of KUSO 13One can also visit industrial promotion units. Every District Headquarters has a District Industries

Centre for guiding young entrepreneurs. One can also visit study circles/study centres/career coachinginstitutes to get career and coaching information. One can also visit libraries established by StateGovt., Colleges and other institutions to know about alternative fields available and for general reading. One can consult with his teaches and colleagues.

Using the various sources outlined above, one should be in a position to be clear abouthis career aims by the time he completes his intermediate education.

It is good to take advice and views from parents before one comes to a conclusion. However, one should take decision for his life himself. Also, it is found very many timesthat the knowledge of parents on the new job trends and career alternatives are limited.Hence the need for search and decision by student himself.

While doing the degree course one should implement a programme of knowledgeacquisition, skill development and attitude development. One can supplement the minimumgeneral education offered with courses on computer, typing and short hand, English speaking, languages (Indian and foreign), physical fitness and on driving. These special skills givethe much needed special advantage. During the final year of degree course one shouldstart applying for the chosen career. It may include applying for further studies.

Thus it can be seen that the student instead of just undergoing the general educationalprogramme, shall actively collect information, analyse and decide on his career. He shallimplement a career building programme. This pro-active approach will help individuals tobe competitive and they will be found qualified for the job.
