All across America, stagecoaches could once
be seen dashing along thousands of miles of
roads day and night. Pulled by four or six horses,
Wells Fargo stagecoaches carried mail, packages,
passengers, baggage, and a Wells Fargo treasure
box. Riding in a stagecoach was not like riding in
a car. The roads were not smooth like our roads
today. They were rutted and rocky, and the ride
was very bumpy. There was no air conditioning
and no heat. In the summer it was very hot and
in the winter it was very cold. And there were no
radios, so the people had to sing songs, play
games, and tell stories to pass the time.

Activity:A pound of grain costs 2 cents. Each pail holds 1 pound of grain. If Mack eats 5 pails of grain each day, how much does his food cost?
Mack ate all his grain, so he was big and strong. 9
Being strong was important because the stagecoach could carry a driver, a messenger, 16 passengers, baggage, mail, and a Wells Fargo treasure box. All that made the stagecoach very heavy.10
One day, a boy named Billy and his mom got on the stagecoach. They came all the way from the East Coast to see Billy’s dad in Carson City. Billy’s dad was a miner who had gone to Carson City to seek his fortune when silver was discovered there.
11
Stagecoach passengers could only bring 25 pounds of baggage. So Billy and his mom could only bring what they really needed.

Activity:A ticket to ride the stagecoach from San Francisco to Carson City cost $15. Circle the bills that add up to $15. If a family of 5 rode on the stagecoach, how much did they have to pay?
The road was steep and rocky, but Mack knew what to do. He knew where to go fast, where to go slow, and where to look out for bears.
15
And Mack knew where to stop for food.
Activity: Each passenger had to pay $1.50 for food at the stage stations. They got beans, bread, coee, and, if they were lucky, a piece of apple pie. If the stagecoach stopped ten times, how much did each passenger have to pay for food?
16
Sometimes the coach leaned way over to one side. Then all the people had to lean the other way to keep the stagecoach upright.
17
The famous writer Mark Twain called the stagecoach “a cradle on wheels” because of the way it rocked. That was good because the people had to sleep sitting up! But Billy didn’t care. He had fun. 18
Billy wanted to be a stagecoach driver. So the driver let Billy sit right next to him. That was a great honor and Billy was very excited!

Activity: The stagecoach brought letters and packages to the people in Carson City. One day the stagecoach brought 9 letters. The letters cost 10 cents each to send on the stagecoach. How much did all the letters cost to send?
