Early North Carolina & Tennessee Land Grants

Land records are important documents that help establish family connections and the location your ancestors lived. Early land North Carolina and Tennessee land grants are available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. It is valuable to learn about the records and how to understand them.

Land acquisition in early Tennessee is definitely more complex. Different governments were in involved and there was an element of time to process these documents. In 1777 North Carolina was able to take over control of her lands from the British government and established land offices in each of its counties. Occupants of Washington County, North Carolina now live in what is known as Tennessee. In 1806 compact with North Carolina, Tennessee and the United States Tennessee could issue land grants providing they honor the grants issued by North Carolina.

Six different types of grants were issued. Purchase grants, Military, Pre-Exemption, Surveyor, Commissioner and Legislative Grants. You can read the full descriptions at https://sos.tn.gov/products/tsla/early-north-carolina-tennessee-land-grants-tennessee-state-library-and-archives

The digital age is beneficial to researchers who can not make the trip to the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Indexes and digital images of the Library and Archives' North Carolina and Early Tennessee Land Records 1753-1931 and North Carolina and Tennessee Revolutionary War Land Warrants 1783-1843 can be found on Ancestry.com's Tennessee State Library and Archives web page https://www.ancestry.com/collections/search/tn/tsla

Some family trees have beautiful leaves, and some have just a bunch of nuts. Remember, it is the nuts that make the tree worth shaking. – Unknown

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Do You Have Mayflower Ancestry?
Next year marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower. The festivities are starting in 2019. See the scheduled events at https://www.boston.com/news/history/2019/09/03/mayflower-400th-anniversary-how-to-watch-live
According to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants there are over 35 million people descended from the Pilgrims. I discovered that I descend from John Howland through my Hawes line. I acquired documentation of the connection through a cousin. I know some of the CCGS members belong to the Mayflower society.
