CHEM-TASTICInstructor: Stephanie Ballard, Chemistry Instructor, Campbellsport School DistrictHave you ever wondered what is in vinegar, soda, and juice? Acid! SPARK your brain with metal and chemical reactions. SHOCK your system with experience in Chemistry. Perform experiments to learn about the nature of matter. Learn about solids, liquids, and gases…and a weird type of matter called a “thixotrope.” It will be CHEM-TASTIC!

TECH-MAGINATIONInstructor: Jennifer Anderson, Elementary Instructor, Eden Elementary Build your own website in Wix showcasing your talented technology skills. You will learn to upload and download audio, video, and picture files. Explore online storytelling and create a VoiceThread, poll, avatar, and cartoon creation. We will use and learn proper “netiquette” skills through a safe online learning environment.

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)Instructor: William Whitehead, Senior Lecturer, UW- Fond du Lac The scene is set and the crime has been committed. It is now your job to learn how to solve the crime! Be a CSI agent and use actual techniques, technology, and methods used to investigate crime scenes. General data collection, time of death estimation, and the use of human bones to identify age, sex, geographic origin and many other traits from human remains are just a few of the topics that will be covered.

SCULPTURE-MANIAInstructor: Faye Kemnitz, Art Instructor, Faith Lutheran School, Fond du Lac Time will be our only enemy when we discover there are so many awe-some sculptures to create with wire, plaster wrap, foam board, recycled items, Shrinky Dinks, and even pantyhose! Learn how famous sculptors such as Degas, Calder, Chihuly, and Oldenburg incorporated balance, rhythm, movement, and color into their artwork. Using these same principles we will create our own masterpieces including Winter Olympic Sport Trophies and Wired Insects.

If you didn’t take this last year, now is YOUR chance. Build a fully-functional, programmable robot from start to finish! Start with a bag of parts, learn what each part does, build your robot, and lastly use computer software to program it. On the last day, it’s time to compete! Arrange the tricks to make your own entertaining routine. Put it into practice to WOW and AMAZE family and friends with your new-found magical powers.

WILD ABOUT WATERCOLORInstructor: Alice Tzakais, Art Instructor, North Fond du Lac School DistrictGet wet and wild while you learn watercolor. Take an adventure with watercolor techniques and experiments. Learn traditional techniques, tricks of the trade, and many experimental methods. Bring an old shirt…this could get messy!

SUPER SCIENTISTS & MARVELOUS MATHEMATICIANSInstructors: Bobbi Jo Mand, Middle School Math Instructor, Fond du Lac School District; Jessica Hughes, Middle School Science Instructor, Fond du Lac School DistrictAre double stuffed Oreos really double stuffed? Can plants grow in a bottle? Have you ever seen a magic animal grow 400% in size? Collaborate with other students to answer these questions and more. Have a blast performing hands on science experiments, all while increasing problem solving, mathematical, and higher-order thinking skills.

CREATURE CREATIONSInstructor: Megan Stroup, Elementary Instructor, Fond du Lac School DistrictEver wonder why an elephant needs big ears? Why does an owl have such big eyes? Why does an ostrich have that long of a neck? Explore these questions about animal characteris-tics and traits and learn much more about what it takes for those animals to survive. Take that knowledge and use recycled, found and craft mate-rials to create your very own animal to add to the Animal Kingdom. What WOULD happen if elephant ears, owl eyes, and ostrich necks were com-bined into one animal?!

CHEMKIDSInstructor: Stephanie Ballard, Chemistry Instructor, Campbellsport School DistrictPut on your science goggles and come have some fun! You will perform experiments to help understand properties of matter such as viscosity and density in this hands-on chemistry class. Students will work in teams to build a density column. Using materials you can find in your own homes such as syrup, ketchup, and corn starch, to illustrate other properties of matter. Learn what happens when different chemicals combine to form mixtures and how chemicals can create some unusual results!

PRINTMAKING WITH PIZZAZZ!Instructor: Faye Kemnitz, Art Instructor, Faith Lutheran School, Fond du LacJoin the fun as we explore several printmaking processes and create inspiring artworks such as monoprint mandalas, insect collagraph prints, and Gyotaku (Japanese fish impressions). We’ll learn about some awesome artists and their famous works. Paint shirts and ambition are a must when we dive into the paints, inks, foam, bubble wrap, string, leaves, veggies, and whatever else we can find to design our own original prints with pizzazz!

SHAPES OF FLIGHTInstructor: Judy Schieble, retired Science Teacher, Sheboygan Area School DistrictUp, Up, and Away! Explore the excitement of engineering while you build objects such airplanes, parachutes, balloons, kites, and rockets. Start from the ground up by planning and building various aircraft and performing flight tests to evaluate your object’s design and purpose. You will also organize, compare, and interpret your object’s flight. Examine the interaction of Math, Science, and Technology and TAKE FLIGHT!

DIY – MAKE AND TAKEInstructor: Deb SerweDo It Yourself soap, wreaths, wall art, felt hats, and tile art. Create a new DIY project every day. What is in soap and how do you make it? Make sheet music into a holiday or seasonal wreath. Toilet paper rolls can be made into circular wall art. Keep your head warm with a felt hat that you will sew and tie together. There may even be time to do a tile or rope project. Come and DO IT YOURSELF.

2014 College for Kidsand

L.E.A.P.S.WHAT ARE COLLEGE FOR KIDS AND L.E.A.P.S.?

In general these programs offer a week of fun, hands-on learning that kids enjoy. College for Kids is for students entering grades 5-8 in fall 2014; L.E.A.P.S. is for students entering grades 2-4.

Some of the benefits for students are that they:• discover new areas of interest• experience stimulating and challenging activities• collaborate with students having similar interests and abilities• use creative and higher-order thinking skills• develop a love of learning and discovery.

REGISTRATION:

Deadline: June 10, 2014. Seats are limited. Register early.Educational offerings for College for Kids and L.E.A.P.S. are organized into camps. Every effort is made to keep class sizes to a maximum of 16 students.

Simply choose one camp and register/pay online at fdl.uwc.edu/ceIf you do not have internet access, call (920) 929-1155 to register.

Fees: See individual camps for fee information. Fees include instruction, materials, snacks, and beverages. Lunch is included for College for Kids.

Scholarships: Scholarship applications for students in the Fond du Lac School District that are registering for College for Kids are available online at fdl.uwc.edu/ce. Scholarships may also be available to students that qualify for free/reduced lunch.

Confirmation: Confirmation of enrollment will be emailed to students after June 20, 2014.

CHAPERONES:

We are looking for parents willing to be chaperones. Duties range from being teacher aides to helping at food breaks. Par-ents helping with these duties will have their child’s registration fee reduced (to $75 for College for Kids; to $45 for L.E.A.P.S.). If you are interested in serving as a parent chaperone, please email rhonda.stucky@uwc.edu. Include the program name (College for Kids/L.E.A.P.S.), your child’s name, and your name/contact information. You will be contacted after June 20 and only if selected to be a chaperone.

SCHEDULE:

Educational offerings for College for Kids and L.E.A.P.S. are organized into camps. Each camp has two courses. One course will be before lunch (C4K)/snack (LEAPS) and the other course will be after lunch (C4K)/snack (LEAPS) Monday – Thursday.
