38th Annual Guitar Competition ConcertHonoring the memory of

Norman Douglas Sholin (1951-1980) Norman Douglas Sholin founded and designed the guitar degree program at the University of Arizona School of Music and Dance in 1974.

Mr. Sholin earned a BFA (1974) and an MFA (1978) in classical guitar from the California Institute of the Arts. He studied with teacher and musicologist Emilio Pujol in Cervera, Spain in 1972 and 1973 and played in a master class for Andrés Segovia in 1973.

The University of Arizona has become a major international center for the study of classical guitar. The Norman Douglas Sholin Memorial Scholarship Award, which is presented annually, promotes excellence in this segment of the arts. Through their gifts, donors honor the students that qualifiy for it, as well as the memory of Mr. Sholin, whose love for the guitar and its music still brings inspiration.

ANGELITO AGCAOILI studied guitar with Mario Rodriguez at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines; José Luis Rodrigo at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música in Madrid, Spain; Elliot Frank at East Carolina University; and Frank Koonce at Arizona State University. He participated as a performer in master classes by world-renowned guitarists Leo Brouwer, José Tomás, John Williams and David Russell. He has won multiple guitar competitions in the Philippines and was the recipient of several scholarship awards including grants from the Spanish government through the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional and from the Young Artists Foundation of the Philippines. Angelito has served on the faculty of the University of Santo Tomás, Santa Isabel College and St. Scholastica’s College (in the Philippines) and as a teaching assistant at East Carolina University and Arizona State University. He is currently the guitar teacher at Arcadia Music Academy and Christ Lutheran School in Phoenix, Arizona.

JOSÉ LUIS PUERTA earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in guitar with a minor in ethnomusicology from the University of Arizona as well as Master of Music and a Bachelor degrees in guitar performance from the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico. As a guitarist, he has performed in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, Spain and throughout the United States. Dr. Puerta joined the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music faculty as assistant professor of music in general music education, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses related to Latin American music. In addition to his teaching, he is currently the conductor and director for the Tucson Guitar Society Orchestra.

ERIK SLOYKA holds a Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance from the Eastman School of Music, Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in guitar performance from the Arizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts–School of Music. His principal professors include Frank Koonce, Nicholas Goluses and Paul Grove. He currently teaches at the Arizona School for the Arts, Phoenix College and Kirk’s Studio for the Performing Arts. He has taught at the Ahwatukee Music Studio, Foothills Music School, Destiny Community School and the Youth Development Institute. In addition to winning numerous prizes at competitions, Dr. Sloyka has extensive performance experience including radio broadcasts and appearing as a guest soloist with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra.
