AvidyneBased in Lincoln, Mass., Avidyne Corp. is the
market-leading developer of integrated flight deck
systems for general aviation (GA) aircraft. Avidyne’s
Entegra line revolutionized flying in 2003 as the
first integrated flight deck for GA and the product
evolution continued with the introduction of the
Entegra Release 9 Integrated Flight Deck. Western
Michigan University entered into partnership with
Avidyne in 2005 when it received the Entegra-
equipped Cirrus SR-20. In 2010, WMU upgraded all
26 of its Cirruses with the most advanced flight deck
avionics available in general aviation—the Avidyne
R9. This state-of-the-art system comes equipped
with high-resolution glass, and dual FMS900w Flight
Management Systems with QWERTY keyboard. In
addition, each aircraft is outfitted with the Avidyne
DFC100 digital autopilot. A partnership with a
purpose? You bet! The marriage between WMU and
Avidyne provides our students the opportunity to
train on the most advanced GA package available.
This equates to a more marketable and industry-
ready graduate.
CirrusSimply stated, no other general aviation plane
comes close to a Cirrus. After more than 25 years,
the name of Cirrus has become associated with
the accolades and hallmarks that mean so much—
performance, safety, and innovation. This all-
composite aircraft revolutionized the industry and
allowed Western Michigan University to leave all
other collegiate aviation programs in the dust. With
a maximum cruising speed approaching 160 knots,
a 200-horsepower engine, and a NASA-designed
wing to help prevent stalls, the Cirrus SR-20 is the
best GA aircraft available for teaching the next
generation of professional pilots. Coupling the
performance characteristics with the safety features
of the aircraft, such as the Cirrus Aircraft Parachute
System, no wonder it is the training aircraft of choice
for Western Michigan University. A partnership with
a purpose? You bet! As one of the first collegiate
programs to embrace using this high-performance,
state-of-the-art aircraft, WMU pioneered the next
wave of aviation education. The use of the SR-20
provides WMU alumni the opportunity to enter the
marketplace with transferable abilities and skills
that transcend the competition.

WMU’s College of Aviation is Leading the Way
Western Michigan University’s College of Aviation
continues to lead the collegiate aviation world.
With more than 70 years of aviation experience,
history, and expertise, WMU has established its
nationally recognized program by producing
highly sought-after graduates, adopting the most
advanced training aircraft and avionics available,
and continuing to grow its three degree programs.
With a storied history spanning seven decades,
WMU has built a nationally recognized aviation
program. Launched in 1939, it has grown from a
single maintenance program to its current status,
which includes degree programs in Aviation Flight
Science, Aviation Science and Administration, and
Aviation Maintenance Technology. Today’s programs
are built upon the tradition of excellence that
started at the dawn of the 1940s. Regardless of
their program choice, students are exposed to the
latest technologies, the most advanced training
systems, and cutting-edge educational experiences.
Needless to say, graduates continue to have a
competitive advantage that only comes from
being a WMU Bronco.
As one of the first collegiate flight programs to
adopt the Cirrus SR-20 as its main training platform,
Western Michigan University revolutionized the
way the next generation of professional aviators is
taught. Adopting the aircraft in 2005, WMU quickly
learned the SR-20 was a valuable and efficient
training mechanism. With greater power, faster
speeds, and the most advanced cockpit in general
aviation, the Cirrus SR-20 propelled the program
light years ahead of the competition. Another factor
in 26 Cirruses making up the WMU fleet is the
“Teaching at the college has been a terrific experience. To see the growth of the students from when they come into class for the first time as freshmen, to their first semester, and then at graduation is tremendous. When we are at the Women in Aviation International Conference, the feedback has always been positive with respect to the students, university program, quality of training, and the high degree of skill, knowledge, and professionalism our graduates present. WMU is well respected within the aviation industry and employers seek out our graduates.”
Gail Rouscher – Professor, College of Aviation
Western Michigan University COLLEGE OF AVIATION
fact that the SR-20 is regarded as the safest plane
in general aviation. WMU’s foresight has been
validated as several collegiate aviation programs
have adopted the Cirrus.
In addition to the transferable skills developed
and honed because of the SR-20’s capabilities,
WMU students pioneered the transition to “glass
cockpits.” The Avidyne Entegra integrated flight
deck avionics package provides students the
opportunity to interface with the type of equipment
they will encounter as they continue their
professional journey. Not resting on its laurels, in
2010 the College of Aviation upgraded all 26 of its
Cirruses with the most advanced avionics in general
aviation—the Avidyne R9. This futuristic flight deck
incorporates a fully operational Flight Management
System (FMS) and the digital flight control autopilot
DFC100. These are among the many options this
feature-rich flight deck offers. Combined with the
SR-20, the Avidyne R9 prepares WMU students
for the advanced, complex, and challenging
world of the modern cockpit encountered by the
professional pilot.
Further augmenting and supporting the program is
the generous donation of a fully functioning 727 by
the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals
and Fed Ex. Access to a fully operational 727
elevates students within the Aviation Maintenance
Technology program to the commercial airline level.
Building on the solid foundation established within
the program, the addition of this aircraft will provide
WMU students a thorough understanding of the
advanced aviation system and its complex nature.
Included with the hands-on curriculum, students
are exposed to course work which provides the
foundation for future career growth opportunities.
Many graduates experience career advancement
within the aviation maintenance field, ascending
into positions as project leaders and managers, and
ultimately managers of maintenance facilities.
The strong academic foundation established in
the classroom is paralleled by the success WMU
students encounter in extracurricular activities.
Over the past 20 years, WMU’s competitive flight
team, the SkyBroncos, has brought home two
national championships and placed fourth or higher
19 out of 20 years in the National Intercollegiate
Flying Association competition. They have also
been regional champions 15 times over the last 20
years. To say it’s a “Great day to be a Bronco” also
rings true in the challenging world of competitive
collegiate flying.
With the third largest aviation program in the
country, Western Michigan University stands
ready to help you “live your dream!”. Whether
your dream is to fly, maintain, manage, or control,
WMU’s College of Aviation has the program for you.
“The College of Aviation changed my perspective. I transferred into WMU as a junior; however I chose to live in the dorms with the freshmen. What a shock! Initially, I felt like the old man and was nervous I wouldn’t make friends, but these flyboys became like family. Living in the aviation house for two years was the best decision, and I would make the same decision in a heartbeat. Although hesitant, I decided to get involved with a student organization. I chose the Aviation Student Council. Working with a small crew of other aviation students, we totally overhauled the organization and made it into an absolute powerhouse. In addition to working alongside the faculty, we also established ourselves as the umbrella group for the other aviation student organizations. With hard work and determination, I was able to become president and led the group to new heights.
In between ASC and the exciting dorm life, I experienced a rigorous course load, forcing me into the books and requiring me to go beyond typical research methods. Upon graduation, I immediately gained employment with Triumph Gear Systems, part of the Triumph Group. We are a premiere aviation supplier working with companies such as Boeing, Sikorsky and Bell Helicopter. My success here is a reflection of my time spent at WMU.”

Air TrafficControlFAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative.
WMU is one of only 36 colleges and universities across the United States—and the only one in Michigan —that has been accepted to partner with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in its Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI).
The AT-CTI program was launched by the FAA in 1990 to provide qualified applicants to fill developmental, air traffic control specialist positions within the FAA. The current plan for the FAA controller workforce is to hire more than 10,000 new controllers in the next 10 years, making this a great time to pursue a career in air-traffic control.
“I look forward coming to work every day – how many people can say that? Years ago, I thought the greatest career in the world was being a professional pilot. Now, after 20+ years in the aviation industry, there is only one thing I enjoy more than flying, and that is sharing my passion for flight with our students. I am so proud to be a part of the College of Aviation. Our student-centered research enables us to pioneer revolutionary new methods of instruction designed to improve a pilot’s ability to fly and to work efficiently with a crew —not just train pilots. This is such an exciting, rapidly changing industry, requiring new approaches to educate the next generation of aviation professionals, and I am so fortunate to be in the heart of it!”
Lori Brown – Assistant Professor
Learn to live your dream at wmich.edu/aviation
The AT-CTI is an initiative by the FAA to allow
collegiate institutions to deliver a portion of the
academic part of the air traffic control course
normally conducted at the FAA Academy in
Oklahoma City. Including WMU, only 36 institutions
in the nation are able to offer these courses.
Completion of the AT-CTI courses does not give
preference for hiring. Candidates must still go
through the FAA selection procedure to be accepted
into training as an air traffic controller.
WMU’s College of Aviation has been selected to
provide courses in air traffic control. The FAA has
provided the college with the course information
and full details, including curriculum framework
and timeline for implementation. The curriculum
includes the objectives for the ATC Basics course,
which will be integrated into existing aviation
degrees at WMU. Students interested in the AT-CTI
courses must be seeking a degree in aviation flight
science or aviation science and administration.

“I am an Aviation Administration and Flight Science graduate of the class of 2008. WMU was my choice of school due to its highly regarded reputation and many years of proven experience. I am currently employed as a manager of corporate publications for a business aviation services company providing solutions to the corporate, regional, and government aviation sectors. I feel that WMU truly prepared me for my career through its diverse selection of courses. When talking to people, I often come across the assumption that aviation is all about the airlines, but there is so much more, and my current career is an example of just that!”
