Wish you were here

There are many reasons for collecting artwork. For some people a picture is an investment; for others, a personal statement or a means of expressing themselves in their home. For Doug Hyde collectors though, the reasons are almost always deeply personal, and they were beautifully summed up for us by one of his biggest fans:

“I have been buying paintings for 20 years, but when I came across the sensational talent of Doug Hyde I felt a unique sense of connection with his work – it was like forming an instant close friendship. As well as an aesthetic, artistic appeal, there was something more that spoke to me, and I know I am not alone in this. These images lift my spirits when I look at them; they remind me that even in the 21st century, life is still about more than ambition, achievement and acquisition, and that it can be greatly enriched by a great piece of artwork and a smile.”

After two years of anticipation, rumour and social media buzz, the wait is finally over! The new collection is set to surpass the expectations of his most passionate and devoted collectors, and we would urge you to secure your edition today and enjoy these highly prized pieces in your home.

The new collection will speak to people’s hearts and, with its summertime vibe, will also remind us that we are heading towards bright and happy times. These inspirational new releases take us on a memorable trip round the highlights of a very British summer, from dog-loving gardeners to intrepid swimmers and of course, that essential seaside ingredient – the ice cream van. The collection includes a trio of vibrant paper editions, and Daisy Trail and Summertime are also available as highly detailed sculptures hand finished in classic Doug Hyde colours.

Much of the character in these images originates in the way that Doug works with his materials. He chooses pastels as they offer a superb range of textural contrasts, but they also allow him to engage with the paper directly through his hands. He always has a very definite vision of how the finished image should look, although this may change during the creative process, and this means he likes to work quickly in the early stages of composition. His highly personal pastel technique uses fingers and thumbs to apply the colour with supreme control, and has the additional effect of forming a uniquely intimate bond between artist and paper. The result of this unorthodox approach is that when viewed closely the smudges and shading are apparent, but they are so dexterously executed as to give total clarity to each image. Although the impact of his artistic voice is due in part to his use of narrative strand, it is the perfect simplicity of the image and this subtle tonal highlighting that makes these pieces so direct in their appeal.

The charm, immediacy and diversity of the collection shows once again why Doug was described as

His exploration of the spectrum takes us into a world of breathtaking light and colour which betrays his personal admiration of Mark Rothko. Rothko’s vast canvases which experiment with great swathes of colour made a huge impact on the young Doug when he first saw them at Tate Modern, and he has always remembered this encounter with gratitude and awe. He has also gradually created a language of elegant formal devices and set pieces which convey both artistic and personal messages; from the quirky to the iconic his

If you see a friend without a smile, give them one of yours.

Doug Hyde’s unique and innovative style speaks directly to the emotions of his audience by summarising love, desires, wishes and dreams, and has turned him into a genuine artist of the people, for the people. His inimitable style is characterized by stunning manipulation of colour, creative use of form and genuine diversity of content. Over the years his style has shifted and progressed in subtle ways, reflecting the changes in both his personal circumstances and the world around him. His artistic journey has taken him from mono tonal figurative work to blazing technicolour narratives, with his distinctive palette becoming one of his defining characteristics.

“A smile is the key that unlocks everyone’s heart.”

When you ask someone about the most important relationships in their lives, there are certain answers you expect. Partners, children, extended family, friends, many of these are likely to feature high up the list, and I think I would have to describe myself first and foremost as a family man, although I do have great friends. In addition however, there is a relationship in my life that is very important and special to me but that is quite hard to define, and that is my relationship with my collectors.

When I began to paint seriously, it was extremely difficult to part with my work, except to family and friends. Then at my first exhibition I found it a disconcerting thought that a stranger would be buying something that had meant so much to me, and that one of my highly personal paintings was going to be “out there”. Over time however my attitude has completely changed.

I have been lucky enough to meet many collectors either when touring or through other events, and I can honestly say that this has been one of the most rewarding and positive aspects of my life as an artist. Time and again I have found a genuine connection with people who think as I do - that those moments of joy, amusement or contentment that punctuate a life should be remembered, banked and above all, celebrated. “

“ In a way my paintings represent a diary of happy days and wonderful

memories that I hope others can relate to and enjoy.”

Impressions of the Season

Sherree is simply exceptional, and after more than 30 years as a highly successful artist she has a formidable reputation both at home and abroad. As well as a list of collectors that reads like an extract from ‘Who’s Who’ (including members of the Royal Family), she has painted portraits of celebrities ranging from the great and the good of show-biz like Michael Parkinson and Joanna Lumley, to Jonny Wilkinson, the golden boy of rugby and Lord Coe, star athlete and Olympic hero. Last year she fulfilled one of the most rewarding commissions of her career, creating a beautiful scene in which Her Majesty the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are walking through the historic setting of Windsor Home Park. Sherree was invited to attend a private reception at Windsor Castle to present the painting to Her Majesty. Unsurprisingly, her originals are fetching huge sums and are becoming harder and harder to track down, while her collectable limited editions sell out on publication.

Her latest published collection is an exquisite quartet of images that takes us from breezy cliff tops to the lawns of Ascot in the company of exquisitely dressed socialites and charming groups of happy children. Despite the difference in subject, what each of these pieces share is a sense of a genuinely memorable day that we are being invited to enjoy as it recalls some of our own happiest memories. As Sherree herself says:

It goes without saying that exhibitions of Monet, Renoir or Degas draw immense crowds in the world’s galleries, but over the last few decades impressionism has also enjoyed a major resurgence amongst contemporary artists. This is due in part to a small coterie of outstanding figures who have brought their own interpretation to this most beloved of artistic styles. Of this group, perhaps the most distinguished is ‘the face of modern British impressionism’ herself, Sherree Valentine-Daines.

“Children make a wonderful subject for an artist. When you encounter that level of natural freedom and lack of pretension it can be very liberating and I find that I engage with my subject in a completely different way. I am generally rather a stickler for the somewhat classical attributes of balance and technical accuracy, but with these paintings the censor in my head finds it hard to keep pace with my paintbrush. Consequently they are amongst my most spontaneous and I hope they communicate some of the joy I experience when I create them.”

“As a Modern Impressionist and figurative artist I am fascinated by the effect of colour and light on a subject rather than the subject itself. I also love to explore the ideas of beauty and joie de vivre, so I tend to seek out scenes which guarantee I will find exactly what I’m looking for; days out at social events, kite flying on Box Hill, trips to the seaside with the children, all these give me the inspiration I need. I find the colours, the movement, the fall of a piece of fabric, the interplay of light and shadow all cry out to be captured on canvas.”

“For over 20 years I have run an art class, inviting students to come and learn to paint models from life. Because of my traditional training and my personal experience, I advocate this process as an essential step on the road to becoming painter, but I also recognize that it is important for me to continue my own studies in this area. In addition to studying anatomy and technique, my students learn that painting from life consists of 75% looking at the model and 25% looking at the canvas. If they can grasp that then they are already well on the way to producing an honest piece of work. I sometimes even send the model into another room and they have to go back and forth, thereby training their powers of observation and visual memory. Another useful exercise is the five-second sketch. Everybody has a piece of charcoal and

plenty of paper on which to produce 50 five-second sketches – a technique I often employ myself. At the end of this project every single person will have something worth looking at and a starting point for a composition.”

“For any figurative artist life studies – the painting of a human figure from observation of a live model - are an integral part of the artistic process. In order to paint the human form with any degree of veracity one needs to understand the basics. From the technicalities of form, shape and scale to the

finer details of muscle tone and how the body moves in relation to itself, every component of the composition must be consistently described, whether in a realistic or more abstract style. Whether the study is of a reclining nude or a race-goer clad in full ladies day regalia, the same rules apply.”

“While I spend the winter months closeted in my studio working away, I like to get out and about as much as I can during the summer. Much of my painting is inspired by the English social calendar, so I always attend Royal Ascot and Henley, as well as vintage car rallies and

a variety of other events with my sketchbook and camera, or sometimes even my easel. These special days are a recurring theme in my work, as I find the colours, the atmosphere,

the elegant figures, and not least the interplay of light and shadow totally inspirational.”

His new releases offer us a fascinating artistic commentary on two of his favourite scenes, a luminous view of the City of London featuring the iconic Tower Bridge, and the cosmopolitan chaos of Time Square . Both pieces are beautifully true to life while retaining a whimsical charm, and are crammed with ideas and incident. The words which are so important to the shaping of each scene have been chosen by the artist, but it is up to you, the viewer to decide why…fonts, colours, shapes of letters – all these elements of the printed matter are important, but as Tom himself suggests with the title of his New York landscape, they are also chosen for what they have to tell us…

“My subject matter has varied over the years, but I’ve really enjoyed studying London recently with all its old fashioned charm and bustle - it’s a place you could never tire of returning to. Other cities that appeal from an artistic perspective include Paris (my wife is from there and I have a definite affinity with the place), New York, Havana and of course Venice. I love to travel and discover new

places and I relish the prospect of doing so in the future – what better excuse does one need? Let’s hope the Inland Revenue see it as a ‘necessary’ self-employed expense!”

Tom Butler’s show-stopping collages combine realism and impressionism to offer an innovative alternative take on

modern life. In his imaginative hands a section of a crossword puzzle may become a block of flats, a wine bottle, or a church spire; words are everywhere, and this unique approach adds intrigue, resonance and a touch of humour to every scene.

In 2004, Tom and his Parisian wife took a holiday in the South of France and visited a beautiful town called Uzès. He was mesmerised by the light, colour and textures - the bright awnings and parasols amongst weathered stone buildings, shuttered facades and crumbling masonry and ‘les publicités anciennes’ - huge, faded adverts from bygone days that used to be hand painted onto the sides of buildings.

Tom says: “Maybe this is where my attraction to having text within a painting began. Every angle of this town was an artist’s delight. With photos galore, I set about recreating what I’d experienced as soon as I returned. The resulting artwork proved successful with local galleries and ultimately paved the way for my love of capturing cityscapes. Tom Butler the artist was born here!”

Over the years travel has continued to be a strong influence on Tom. He loves to travel and discover new places and has recently been inspired by the Cornish coast, where he and his family hope to live one day.

“The paintings that have been the most successful for me have straddled the line between realism and impressionism and marry together the medium of paint and printed material. A winning original should have harmony and balance and be appealing both from afar and up close.”

Tom excelled at university and achieved a 1st class honours degree in General Illustration. His knowledge and love of art is wide ranging. "I really appreciate the use of colour and light by some of the Impressionist painters, namely Monet and Cezanne. I have studied the work of Singer Sargent, Kandinsky and the 1930's poster artist and typographer, A.M Cassandre. During my degree I was inspired by the talents of Norman Rockwell and cartoonist Steadman. More recently I have been struck by the work of contemporary artists such as Luke Martineau, Mike Bernard, and Andrew Hood to name but a few. Anybody that can capture the essence of a subject matter with expression and vigour is an inspiration."
