WHAT IS THE COLD WAR?

TERMS TO KNOW:

Satellite states: is a political term that refers to a country

that is formally independent, but under heavy political and

economic influence or control by another country.

Iron curtain: A notional barrier that prevents the passage

of information or ideas between political entities, in particular.

Containment: a United States policy using numerous

strategies to prevent the spread of communism abroad.

Berlin airlift: 1948 that supplied food and fuel to

citizens of west Berlin when the Russians closed off

land access to Berlin.

Truman doctrine: The principle that the US

should give support to countries or peoples

threatened by Soviet forces or communist

insurrection.

used to stop the russian’s expansion to the

other european countries.

Truman wanted to aid turkey, greece and

other countries by getting the us involved

in european affairs. He convinced them by

saying that the us were obliged to support

free people and that the cold war was a

chance to choose between freedom and

oppression.

The money that was spent ($338 million)

was spent on bomers.
