At Logan we value our culture as something that sets us apart, and rightfully so, but we have to be cautious at the same time that we don’t allow that sense of protection to inhibit our growth and development. novelis Recycling ChallengeTom Walpole, President, Novelis North America, has announced that Novelis will be holding its Can Recycling Challenge (or what has been know at Logan as the Novelis Can Contest) in 2012. Each U.S. location competes for the most aluminum beverage cans collected per employee. The winner will receive $5,000. Each location also competes for the best internal and external promotion, a $1,000 prize for each. The awards will be donated to the charity chosen by the winning site. Additionally, each location’s results will be submitted to the Great American Can Roundup Industry Challenge, a can collection campaign organized by the Can Manufacturer’s Institute. If a Novelis location collects the most cans per employee in the contest, it will win an additional $2,000 from CMI to donate to a charity of its choice. Logan has decided to divide evenly the proceeds of the collected cans as well as any awards from the Challenge among the schools in Logan County and Russellville City school systems.

Logan has chosen September as the month in which we will participate. Please begin collecting aluminum beverage cans at home, organization (church, veteran, scouts, etc.), community and sporting events, summer get-togethers, etc. during the summer. During the month of September bring in the cans you have collected. Employees will have the opportunity to enter for weekly drawings for prizes. A grand prize will be given to the employee who collects the most cans. Tri-Arrows Aluminum has also agreed to match Logan’s contribution based on cans collected! Let’s make this a great competiton!

The POWER Process (Protecting Our Workers by Eliminating Risk) is a behavior based safety process which is intended to increase safe behaviors and reduce at-risk behaviors at Logan. One of the ways this is accomplished is by using observation data to identify and remove barriers to safe behavior. In most units this process begins with the Safety Star Points from each team reviewing observation data and creating action items to address the identified barriers. These action items are then assigned to the appropriate resources for completion.

During an average month over 30 of these activities are completed across the plant. Some solutions are simple, such as ensuring protective equipment is readily available, while others are much more complex, for example, redesigning a piece of equipment. Regardless of the difficulty, none of this would be possible without the efforts of the POWER observers and barrier removal teams. Thank you for helping reduce exposure at Logan!

Thanks to all who participated in the Earth Day activities. It was a successful week and a great Expo day, thanks to everyone’s help.

REMELTRemelt had one LTA, 2 recordable injuries and 8 first aid injuries in 2011. Completed safety projects including dross house RIE, DC3 charge bucket area RIE and installation of new snif lid on DC2 removing a cringe factor. A major barrier removed is the development of hand tools used to keep hands off objects as it is being lifted. Another safety improvement is a new shirt for individuals on the Recycle receiving team. This shirt provides more awareness for others to be able to see these team members.

Remelt set several production records in 2011. Annual total casting record was set with 1.307 billion pounds cast vs. budget of 1.263 billion. Other production records set were DC1 casting at 313.12 million, DC2 casting at 424.32 million, Dry Hearth production at 48.24 million and Recycle producing 132.25 million pounds molten. These records were set while completing several outages and continuous improvement projects including the DC2 major outage to install regenerative burner systems to the melt furnace, DC3 5-strand implementation and less than budget prime consumption.

Welcome new team members: Melissa Bradshaw to MPC-A, Brandon Toler to Melt-B, Art Violette to Cast-A, Brandon Latham to Melt-A, Dustin Dockery to Cast-B, Kimberly Henderson to MPC-B , Shaun Taylor to Recycle-D, Jason Campbell to GTs and Dan Buerck as Remelt Staff Mechanical Engineer.

Note From Stacey Hughes, HR Manager

I wish to thank all of my Logan Aluminum team members and their families for their prayers, gifts, cards, emails, texts and offers of assistance during my recent sudden illness. Your kindness and thoughtfulness meant so much to me and my family at the most difficult time of our lives. We never know what may happen to us in our lives, but it is so comforting to know that I had so many of you praying and thinking of me. I felt that support every day and it lifted me up during my toughest days. My Logan family is such a blessing to my life.

I am happy to be back at work full time seeing all the smiling faces of my teammates. The love and concern has not stopped. A wonderful support network checks on me daily to see how I am feeling. You make the good days better and encourage me through the bad days that I still experience. My progress and prognosis is good thanks in part to the exceptional doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt University Liver Transplant Clinic. Most importantly, I give thanks to my donor angel and his/her family for giving me the gift of life.

In closing, I want to share this poem that has meant so much to me over the last few months. I will always be thankful for each of you.
