Abstract: Michael Jordan has worked on a variety of topics in cognitive science and machine learning, exploring how the process oflearning itself can be formalized and drawing deep connections to statistics. This symposium will feature speakers who have beeninfluenced by different eras of Jordan's research program from neural networks, to first contact with statistics, to expressiveprobabilistic models and nonparametric Bayesian inference. The presentations will explore the impact of this work in both cognitivescience and machine learning, highlighting the ways in which Jordan's work has influenced how we think about learning in bothhumans and machines.
