ABRSM in schools
Auckland teacher events
Coda:
In February, ABRSM’s representatives
from around New Zealand met together in
Christchurch for our biennial conference.
We were very pleased this year to be joined
by Tim Arnold, International operations
Director (pictured far left), and our new
Chief Executive, Guy Perricone (back right).
The conference was an excellent chance
to meet together both as friends and as
colleagues, and to work together with two of
ABRSM’s senior management. The weekend included a stunning performance
from young chamber musicians Harry Ellerm, Martin Roberts, and Stephen
Watson, superbly tutored by Ellen Doyle.

Don’t forget that if you’d like to prepare for a
Diploma exam yourself, or have advanced
students working at that level, you don’t have to travel
to a large centre to sit the exam. As long as a suitable
venue and piano are available, Diploma exams are
now available in all our exam centres around the
country. Please contact your local representative or
the Auckland offi ce to discuss your options.
ABRSM is excited to be able to
offer a fully internet-based
Professional Development course
for teachers anywhere in the
world. Being an Effective Teacher
is a course designed to explore
good practice and to develop
confi dent, refl ective teachers. You
will be guided through the course
by an experienced ABRSM mentor
who will:
• Provide feedback and advice on
your current teaching
• Encourage you to evaluate aspects
of your teaching that work well
and any areas that could be
improved
• Lead group and individual
discussion through online forums
and by e-mail
• Introduce you to a wealth of
teaching ideas and resources,
providing fresh ideas for your
lessons
Due to the popularity and success of
this course, there is a waiting period
for enrolment. The next enrolment
will open in August for the November
course. The cost is £295 which is
currently equivalent to around NZ$620.

ABRSM in SchoolsABRSM GrantAs we announced in our January newsletter, we were
thrilled to award the 2010 ABRSM Grant to Kawaha Point Primary School in Rotorua (pictured top left). Sarah Jans,
Arts Team Leader at the school, has used the grant to
purchase materials to build a set of ten mini marimbas,
enough for a class of twenty students to play together.
Work on the marimba project is progressing well and the
students are looking forward to their fi rst lesson.
Each year, ABRSM awards a grant of $1000 to a New
Zealand school with the aim of encouraging new musical
opportunities for students. Applications for 2011 are now
invited, so if you know of a school whose students could
benefi t from this grant then please encourage them to
apply. Applications should be sent in writing to ABRSM’s
Auckland offi ce by the end of October, and should include
a brief outline of the music programme currently offered
in the school as well as specifi c details of how the grant
would be spent.
Theory Incentive SchemeABRSM’s Theory Incentive Scheme is a programme which
rewards schools who enter ten or more students for
Theory exams in a year. The Scheme has been very well
received in schools, with many building ABRSM Theory
exams into their classroom teaching programmes.
It’s very exciting to know that in a time when music
theory teaching is becoming less common, there is
a new generation of young musicians being given a
solid grounding in musical knowledge, and achieving
internationally recognised qualifi cations in the subject.
One of the schools using the Theory Incentive Scheme
is Hato Paora College near Fielding (pictured top right).
Hato Paora College is a Maori Catholic school for boys,
with students attending from all over New Zealand
and the Pacifi c Islands. Rosalyn Williamson has been
teaching at the College since 1985 and became Head of
Music in 1993 when the Music Suite was built. Music is a
very important part of school life, most notably the daily
singing in Chapel. Rosalyn includes ABRSM’s Theory
syllabus in her teaching with all her students from Year
9, and says the Theory work gives them a fi rm foundation
on which to build their NCEA music knowledge, especially
for Composition and some external standards.
Partnership with Chamber Music NZAs you may have read in previous newsletters, ABRSM
is very proud to be the new principal sponsor of the
Chamber Music NZ’s regional coaching programme that
runs as part of the Chamber Music Contest each year.
The regional coaching workshops assist groups from
around the country to gain access to the best coaching
with the aim of increasing the skills and confi dence of the
participants, and their teachers and coaches.
The 2010 regional coaching programme will kick off
in the South Island with a series of workshops run by
the NZTrio (pictured above). This world class ensemble
is very experienced in working with young musicians,
and the workshops will provide selected ensembles a
fantastic opportunity to hear and learn from some of NZ’s
best chamber musicians in a constructive and supportive
environment.
