“For this brief, working in self-organised teams of 2 or 3, you are to design and prototype a mass producible coat stand using metal sheet / tube as the primary materials and to be assembled using the minimum number of fixings possible. The design should be safe, allow for economical mass production and ideally also for efficient packaging and thus suitable for transportation by container in large quantities. Your design should be useful / practical / functional and should differentiate itself in the existing market of coat stand products. The product could either be an improvement on an existing design or create an entirely new type of coat stand.”

We analysed the brief and heighted it’s main point to

help us decide what we wanted our design to focus on

and what we wanted to achieve...

Target market: young families

and couples with limited space.

Target cost: £60 a unit

(relatively cheap) so it will ap-

peal to our target market

Page 3: Coat Stand 1

Brainstorm

We started with a brainstorm exploring where

and how our design was going to be used...

Page 4: Coat Stand 1

Analysing existing products

We liked the simplicity of this de-

sign with the easy assemble of

slotting together.

We liked the sculptural aesthetic of these designs and also the little amount of as-

sembly require to put them up. So we want our design to be have minim assembly

to make it really easy for the user.

We thought that the way the hooks pulled out in these 2 designs was great

so they weren’t sticking out when not in use. This was something we decided

we wanted to include in our product; removable / retractable hooks or mo-

bile ones you could take with you.

We also liked the way this design is multifunctional and acts as a

shelf as well. It gave the idea of having a design that was multi-

function or connects /interacts with other products or furniture.

We looked at different ways of

hanging the coat stand and liked

the idea of using the ceiling or

wall so it wasn’t taking up floor

space.

This rope design was one our favour-

ites. We liked the way it was playful

and sculptural. However, it isn’t that

easy to use because it doesn’t have

individual hooks to holds the clothes

items.

Analysing existing products

Price research …

Coat stands £20—£250. So we have decided

to have a target cost £60 for our product. So

it is a relatively inexpensive stand.

We liked the natural aesthetic of

these stand and the way the have a

2nd function as sculptural state-

ment pieces. This is an element we

could like to include in our design.

We also liked the minimal components if

these designs and how they looked as if

they were made of one piece. This gives

them a really clean aesthetic with I think

would appeal to our target market.

We thought the subtle addition of colour

on the design looks really nice. Again, I

think it is an element that would really

appeal to our target market.

We all loved these fold out designs. They are perfect for mass pro-

duction because they only have one main component.

Considerations when designing for metal...

General tolerance of 0.1mm

Folding tolerance of 0.25mm

Minimum flange should be 4x the metal thickness

sharp corners are hard to machine

Remember need to sand down welds

Design to avoid corrosion

Seal all gaps

Be careful to get a complete weld when joining

pipes together

Don’t put slots / holes too close to bends

Manufacturing methods at ECA...

Research into existing methods of manufacture

We researched elements you have to consider when manufacturing in metal

and also what methods of manufacture were available at ECA. We were egger

to try and use many different production technique while making our prototype

so we could learn to use the machines...

Page 8: Coat Stand 1

Initial ideas

Initial sketches done while we were generating ideas...

Concentring on different shapes.

Combining shelves into the design

to make it multifunctional.

Extendable hooks

Place for umbrellas

Page 9: Coat Stand 1

Initial ideas

We had the idea of having detachable hooks which the user

could remove from the coat stand and take with them to

use as a coat hook. We based hook on this suction pad.

Combination a place for keys

with the coat stand design

So these designs were based on the idea

od a main shape which then had places for

the detachable suctions hooks to be placed

or removed.

The idea of having removable

portable hook solves the

problem people have in pub-

lic places, especially toilets,

or not having anywhere to

hang their coat / bag.

Page 10: Coat Stand 1

Final Ideas

Our final idea was inspired

by a paint splatter because

we wanted it to be sculp-

tural as well as practical

and functional.

The final design is a main shape with spaces

for 5 detachable suction hooks...

Suction hook and how it slides

into the main shape

The suction hocks are held in

place by a curved metal slot

shown in this exploded view.

The ends of the coat stand

bend to hold hats, scarfs

and umbrellas.

It is a wall mounted (using

holes and screw on the

back of the design) coat

stand so it is more appro-

priate for our target market

who will have limited

space.

Page 11: Coat Stand 1

Suction hook disassembly

We had the idea of having detachable hooks which the

user Our design uses this pre-bought component for the

suction hook. So we disassembled it to see how it was

manufactured and its components...

We drew a scale technical drawing of it.

The suction pad

sticks to surfaces by

being tightened us-

ing the front screw

piece.

Page 12: Coat Stand 1

Scale prototype: Development: scale prototype

We made a scale prototype in cardboard to test the design

and work out scales and measurements.

Back piece

It was very useful because it demonstrated

how the different components we needed to

make and the best method of manufacture.

Plasma cut the front and back piece

Where there is tape, on the

real prototype it will be

welded.

Page 13: Coat Stand 1

Final design

These were some of the

products that inspired

our design…

Detachable suction

hold slot in and can

easily be removed.

Polished metal finish.

The ends of the drips will be

painted to add a subtle addi-

tion of colour

The final design will be fixed to the wall using screws (which will be pro-

vided with product) though the hokes in the back of the product.

Our finished prototype fully

assembled.

Page 14: Coat Stand 1

Our prototype: components

Front piece

Sides Hooks

Suction hook holder

These are all the different components of our design. It looks a lot put in fact they could all be plasma cut in

one sheet (aside from the brought in suction hook component) it is easy mass produce.

Page 15: Coat Stand 1

The prototype

Our finished prototype fully

assembled.

Page 16: Coat Stand 1

The prototype in use...

We tested the detachable suction hooks on different surfaces in a variety of places...

...it worked really well and was easy to carry around which proves the practicality of the concept.

Page 17: Coat Stand 1

The prototype in use...

Our finished prototype fixed to the wall with

items on it. I think it very appropriate for our

target market. The painted ends give it a fi=un

and unique look combined with the uncon-

ventional shape.

Page 18: Coat Stand 1

Packaging

‘I stand’ is a friendly name

which would appeal to our

target market because it is

playful using a pun.

The packing is really simple with

minimal components because

out design fully assembled in

the factory.

A box which houses the

majority of the design and

the suction hooks

We wanted to keep the packing equally simple and fun as

the design itself....
