FROM THE PUBLISHERHappy New Year from Coastal Christian Family!

This time of year we hear an awful lot about resolutions and each year I make some of my own. Usually, though, Imake them just silently to myself so there’s no one to hold me accountable. It’s so easy to break a promise tomyself. You know how it goes, “just one more dessert”, or “I’m just too busy to read my Bible this morning”.

But there is one, our Heavenly Father, who has made promises to us that we can count on always. He never lets usdown. God’s Word tells us that we can always count on Him. He loves us and knows us better than we know our-selves. He also has a plan for us.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a futureand a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

I think a good resolution for the New Year is to daily remember the promises of God and have faith that He worksall things to our good, loves us and cares about us. Okay. I actually put that in writing so I’ll have to stick withthat one and I encourage you to do the same.

Blessings for the New Year,

Coastal Faith Productions, LLCPublisher, Coastal Christian Family

How Is Your Posture? And gentlemen, this question is for you too. Right now as you are readingthis, are you slumped over? Caught you, huh?

Now try this, go up to a plain wall, no pictures hanging or chair molding.Butt your heels to the wall. Stand straight up. Put your head against thewall. Do your shoulder blades poke out from your back and touch the wall? Are you feeling any pain around your neck and shoulders trying to pro-trude those blades? You should make one line from a center between yourears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles.

“Well, I have bad posture”, you say.

How would you like a magic pill to help cure your bad posture andprevent it from worsening? It is out there.

First, you agree you have bad posture. With our bad posture, before we take the magic pill, let’s make sure we allknow what continues 5 to 10 to 15 years down theaging line, if in fact we get that far.

When not standing correctly, muscles are not alignedleading to abnormal pull on the muscles and liga-ments. When the small ligaments holding our spineare constantly strained they become near perma-nently stretched, causing the spine to be fixed inan abnormal position. This leads to scoliosis.

Misalignment causes chronic neck and backpain which causes imbalance and strains ourequilibrium. With this continual poor posture weare not just leaning over, we are now humpedover. Our bones are weaker. Our muscles haveturned to drapes because with our weak bones,we are afraid to move much. Stillness sets in.Because of our poor balance and frail body, wefall going to the restroom. We have the hip opera-tion then to therapy. We do okay during therapyand into the following few weeks, but we quit

doing the exercises and become weak and decrepit again. The scenariostarts all over but we are too fragile to walk without a walker much lesscook, drive or shop. We can’t go home. At this point, we will probably nevergo home.

Holy Cow, who wants that? Here is the preventative magic pill I just men-tioned which will keep you healthy and at home. It is tough to swallow andhard to keep taking on a daily basis. But it works. The cure all? Exercise.

Consistent aerobic exercise moves our muscles and causes our heart to beatfaster. We breathe heavier where our blood absorbs more than normalamounts of oxygen and sends nutrients deep to our body and brain cells.Consequently our muscles rejuvenate healthy energetic productive cells andbecome stronger. Since our muscles control the chemistry of growth in ourbodies, we need to regularly move our muscles to be healthy.

Aerobic exercise gives us stronger muscles to support our bones andprop up our joints but the sinews, synovial tissue and bursa sacs,

joint goo in laymen’s terms, dries up regardless, as we addyears to our lives. We need a magic pill to ‘liquid up’ ourjoints and make them stronger too. This pill is...liftingweights. The goal here is not to become ArnoldSchwarzenegger but simply move all your joints, withresistance. This can be pushing the water back andforth in an aerobics swim class or simply lifting twoheavy cans of pork and beans for a number of repeti-tions every which way.

Exercise aerobically and lift weights. These are the twomagic pills to keep you standing tall, strong andhealthy for the rest of your life as well as give yougreat posture!

Discovering the Treasures of God’s Word, with….Captain Davy

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy andwhere thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.(Matthew 6:19-21)

One thing I learned during me life upon the sea as a Pirate is that ye can takeand take and still not have anything of value to fill the holds of yer ship with.Yes, there be many a thief that will also take from ye as you took from others,if ye be a pirate that is. Also the salt air has a way of corroding precious met-als and let’s not mention the rats and bugs about the ship that chew up thefine materials and clothes we would heist from the cargo ships sailing fromSpain through the Caribbean.

Living to pursue the treasures of this earth never turns out good I’ve found. When I turned from me sinful ways and then like that thief on the cross, placed my belief in Jesus as me Savior I decided to become a Privateer. Iworked fer those whom had been stolen from to go and acquire back thegoods or else the necks of those who had robbed from them. But even in thistrade which seemed good and fair I found that again the treasures and pos-

sessions that the owners gained back did not fill their hearts either for thosepossessions were soon rotten, spent or stolen again.

Here be what I have found mateys: Laying up treasures in Heaven can’t bebeat. Gold and silver will buy ye some fun and some trinkets but those pleas-ures be soon gone. Do the Lord’s good work like caring for the sick and feed-ing the poor or telling others about salvation be the only way to store up ahull full of treasures that can never be taken away. Ye see God keeps track ofall the good deeds that we be a doing here on earth and He has rewardsawaiting us in our Heavenly home and no one can steal them and neither dothey rot or fade away.

So take to the sea…or yer neighborhood streets and be like Jesus to others bygiving a kind word, helping those in need or teaching someone about the treas-ures of God’s word !

FairWinds and Following Seas…

CHURCH LEADERS

The Safety NetGod’s grace – what BrennanManning defined asthe acceptance of being profoundly and foreverbeloved by God – is a favorite subject of mine, Ifreely admit as much. I talk about grace, preachabout grace, think about grace, and write aboutgrace. I hope to one day actually understand grace.

Until that understanding comes, I’ll have to with-stand the detractors who find my current knowl-edge of grace to be inadequate. They deem all mygrace-speak as spiritual leniency – it’s far too grace-ful, I suppose. “You’ve turned the grace of God intonothing but a circus net,” one critic wrote not longago,“which is a distortion of God’s holiness.”Well, I am trying to understand, but I like the ideaof a circus net. I like it a lot – it is a fortunate choiceof words. For if I have indeed turned the grace ofGod into a circus net, it is because I know what it islike to lose my grip and fall. At such times the “net”had better be belowme or I am a goner.

If you don’t believe me, go visit the Golden GateBridge. Constructed during the despair of the GreatDepression, it became a California icon that haswithstood the elements more than seventy years, and there are few living Americans who rememberthe San Francisco skyline without that bridge.

The roadway of the bridge is about 250 feet abovethe water. But the suspension towers, at their peak,

are 750 feet high. Construction at this altitude, along with contrary winds, icy fog, unpredictableweather, and occasional seismic tremors frombelow, made for one of the most dangerous placesto work in the world.

With all these factors added into the equation, theproject moved at a snail’s pace. That is until thebridge’s chief engineer, Joseph Strauss, installed agigantic safety net beneath the bridge. By giving theworkers an increased sense of security, they pro-gressed far more quickly and efficiently than before.

They were so efficient that the project came in atmore than $1 million under budget – that’s inDepression era dollars – an outrageous pile of cashfor the time. But the greatest savings wasn’t themoney. It was the men working on the iron high inthe air. Nineteen workers fell into that net duringthe construction of the Golden Gate Bridge andevery one of them walked away without a scratch.

Having cheated death, these workers proclaimedthemselves “The Halfway-To-Hell Club,” saved bythat miraculous web of safety. But after all, wasn’tthat why the net was installed in the first place? Tosave lives? To catch those who slipped and fell? Toreclaim those who would have otherwise stumbledand bumbled their way to disaster?

I doubt that anyone in San Francisco at the timewas concerned that Strauss’ net was “distorting” the

integrity of the construction process. I am certainthat the International Association of Bridge andStructural IronWorkers of America did not file agrievance against the Bridge Authority for promot-ing safer working conditions. And you can bet thatthe wives, children, and parents of “The Halfway-To-Hell Club”didn’t protest. They were just happyto have their loved ones come home at the end ofthe day.

So, is this grace? When we slip and fall will we actu-ally be rescued by a soft landing in the catching, loving hands of God? Is God’s grace really a safetynet? Yes, that seems to be the exact answer from theScriptures and human experience. No fall is too farand no loss of grip is too foolish or irresponsiblebecause God’s grace never loses its bounce, and“nothing in all creation will ever be able to separateus from the love of God.”

Does this make grace too easy? I don’t know, butuntil I do, I think I’ll stick with the venerableCharles Spurgeon’s counsel on the matter. “If peo-ple do not like the doctrine of grace,” he said,“thengive them all the more of it.”Amen.

RebuildingDid you make a NewYear’s Resolution? According to statisticsbrain.com, the top5 NewYear’s Resolutions (from #5 to #1) are the following: to get healthy andphysically fit, to enjoy life as much as possible, to save more and spend less, to getmore organized, and (number 1) to lose weight (http://www.statisticbrain.com/new-years-resolution-statistics/). Although about 45% of Americans make reso-lutions, only about 8% actually say they achieve their goals. In fact, many peopleforget all about working toward their resolutions just days after making them!

Do any of those resolutions above surprise you? Probably not. Not only do theynot surprise me, I think they have actually BEENmy resolutions at one time oranother! The funny thing is that just when I think I have one of them undercontrol, another one suffers!

We can laugh about these failed goals, and maybe even recycle them next year, but there are issues in most of our lives that don’t fit neatly into the “NewYear’sResolution” category. You know the ones—the ones in which we feel totallyunable to fix…the ones that drive us to an unspoken prayer request, to the pas-tor, to our closest circle of friends, or to our moms and dads and siblings forprayer and advice. These are times when we feel helpless, and the situationseems irreparably broken.

Nehemiah was cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I in what is nowmodern Iran. When visited by one of his brothers, he asked about Jerusalem and the Jewsthere, who had escaped Babylonian captivity. The news wasn't good. ‘The sur-vivors…are in great trouble and shame; the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been destroyed by fire,” (Neh. 1:3). When Nehemiah heard thenews, he wept, fasted, and prayed for days. He knew what he had to do, butrebuilding the wall appeared impossible in human terms. The book ofNehemiah details the amazing way that God prepared the way for this seeminglydoomed task to be accomplished.

We can learn from how Nehemiah faced this apparently insurmountable chal-lenge. He wasn’t deterred by the enormous task of rebuilding an entire wall cir-cling a city! He didn’t give up thinking he did not have the money or leadershipfor such an undertaking, and he didn’t stop when he got word that they werecompletely surrounded by enemies planning to attack and destroy what wasbeing rebuilt. He wept, prayed, and fasted. In his supplications, he admitted hisand his people’s disobedience and recognized the great and mighty power ofGod. He motivated the people for the task, set armed watches among thoserebuilding the wall, and trusted God to take care of the rest. The job was fin-ished in record time.

“So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-twodays. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us wereafraid and fell greatly in their own esteem; for they perceived that this workhad been accomplished with the help of our God,” (Neh. 6:15-16). When ourlives, our “walls” are broken, when the problems we face seem unbearable, orwhen we feel powerless to fix things, may we remember our God who hasalways helped us in the past—the Great I Am—who can do anything we canimagine, and so much more.

“For with God, nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1:37)

— Dr. Nina King

AN ENCOURAGING WORD Resolutions"[H]e saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, butaccording to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal ofthe Holy Spirit […]" Titus 3:5 (ESV)

A popular study that gets trotted out every year around this time is a 2002study by the Journal of Clinical Psychology, on the subject of NewYear’sResolutions. The study found that less than half (45%) of Americans makeresolutions, but of these, few maintain them for long: only 64% keep themthrough the end of January. That percentage drops to just above a quarter(26%) by the end of June, and their overall success rate is a whopping 8%.

When you do the math, that means less than one percent of all Americansever make a true, lasting change to their habits and routine.

Why is this so difficult? Some would suggest the answer is down to discipline. Health club owners, whose enrollment numbers surge and then drop off rapidly during the firstmonth of any given year, would tend to agree with this. Those who stick withthe regimen see results and those who don’t… don’t.

Others would suggest the secret lies in accountability. A personal trainer canhelp you shed those unwanted holiday pounds and motivate you when youlack the willpower yourself.

Perhaps, though, the problem lies not in the answer, but in the frameworkof the problem itself. As believers, we are called to examine things different-ly and think about the answers from Christ’s perspective. From that angle, Ican see one glaring problem with the tradition of New Year’s Resolutions, and it is this:

Whobenefits? If your resolution exists solely to make yourself feel better or satisfy someaspect of your personal pride, I’d suggest you re-evaluate it. The entire pointof Christianity is that works alone cannot save. Not only that, works done topromote yourself do not bring glory to God, and that is the single mostimportant thing that we as believers are expected to do.

I’m not saying to do away with resolutions altogether. I’m simply suggestingthat you readjust their focus.

As believers, we have been regenerated and renewed by the Holy Spirit. Thenumber one way that renewal expresses itself is through increased care andconcern for others. The 2002 study cited above suggests that care and concernfor oneself is rarely motivation enough to follow through on a resolve. Thatbeing the case, perhaps the system itself needs tweaking.

This year, instead of making a resolution to change something in yourself, why not make true, lasting change by resolving to help someone else? Thiscould be anything from volunteering at a soup kitchen, to teaching a SundaySchool class, to simply making yourself available for a suffering or grievingfriend. Either way, the point is that instead edifying yourself, you will be edify-ing others.

More importantly, you will be honoring your Heavenly Father and bringingglory to His name. Isn’t it about time you resolved to do that anyway?

Smart Goals for anOrganized 2014When setting organizational goals for your-self, consider incorporating the acronymSMART: Specific, Measureable, Attainable,Realistic and Timely. Using the SMART sys-tem helps you narrow down your prioritiesand achieve your goals. Here are 4 tips to getyou started!

1Organize your time. One of the bestthings I can recommend to anyone whowants to start organizing their life is toget a good planner! This will help youmanage your time, have a place to writedown goals and create a plan for achiev-ing them. Time management is the mostessential part of organizing your life. Youhave to get a handle on your time anduse proper scheduling to create time forthe goals you want to achieve. Plannerscome in all shapes and sizes. There is noset rule on what’s best to use. Find oneyou like and go with it.

2Get rid of excess stuff. Ask for help with letting go and purging theexcess in your home. Purging can be an emotional experience. Get afriend or a professional to help you make the tough decisions of whatto let go of. Plan ahead and call a local donation company to pick updonations at your home. This helps to keep the items from clutteringyour home or tempting you to pull something back out!

3Get to know yourself. Learn who you are and create systems aroundyour habits. I see failed attempts at organizing due to people not know-ing who they are or believing that to be organized they have to changewho they are. Spend some time understanding how you function andwhat your habits are, then you will be able to start putting in placemeaningful systems that will create lasting change.

4Put your body where your heart is. I recently heard Steven Pressfieldspeak about this very thing and it made so much sense. If it is in yourheart to be more organized, then your body has to be in motion to dojust that. Get off the sofa, stop making excuses and put your body inmotion to get organized!

Bobby Bowden is known as much for his affable charm as he is for hischampionship teams. Having coached young men in seven decades,he became the second-winningest coach in major college football

history. Bowden guided Florida StateUniversity to more than three hundred victories, two national championships, twelve AtlanticCoast Conference titles, finishing in the top five inthe country in 14 straight seasons, and led theSeminoles to Bowl Games in 28-consecutive sea-sons during his 34-year tenure. The patriarch ofcollege football’s most famous coaching family,Bowden remains heavily involved in theFellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA); annuallyawarding The National Bobby Bowden Award to astudent-athlete for achievement on and off thefield including his conduct as a faith model in thecommunity. Bowden was inducted into theCollege Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He and hiswife of 61 years, Ann, live in Tallahassee, Fla.

This short bio paragraph above, provided byCoach Bobby Bowden’s management team, doesn’t begin to touch all the accomplishmentsand influence Coach Bowden has had on hun-dreds of student athletes through the years.

Coach Bobby Bowden began playing high school football inBirmingham, Ala. at Woodlawn High School and went on to playquarterback for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. In 1949,he moved back home to Birmingham, transferred to HowardCollege, which is now Samford University, and graduated in 1953.Bowden married his high school sweetheart, Ann Estock, andtogether they raised six children. Bowden’s first coaching job was asan assistant football coach and head track and field coach at HowardCollege (now known as Samford University) in Birmingham, Ala.from 1954-55. He left there to become Athletic Director and headfootball, baseball and basketball coach at South Georgia Collegefrom 1956 to 1958. He then returned to Howard as head coachuntil 1962. In 1962, Bowden went to Florida State University (FSU)as an assistant coach under Head Coach Bill Peterson. In 1965

Bowden left Florida State to go to West Virginia University as an assistanteventually becoming head coach. Bowden returned to FSU as head coachin 1976.

Coach Bowden’s interest and passion for coachingwas partially about football but most of all about cre-ating character and developing maturity in the youngmen he influenced. In his book, Called to Coach,Bowden said, “We won a lot of games at FloridaState, but my greatest accomplishments were seeingmy players become good husbands, fathers, and pro-fessionals” (Bowden and Schlaback, p.19). Bowdenhad a career long practice of having a team meetingthe night before every game, which began with adevotional that he usually led. His influence andspiritual leadership touched not only the players butthe assistant coaches and staff as well. Coach MarkRicht, Head Coach of University of Georgia, wasgiven his first collegiate coaching job by CoachBowden at Florida State University. Coach Bowden isthe one who led him to the Lord in 1986 after a play-er had been shot and killed. Coach Bowden held ateam meeting after the murder and explained eterni-ty to the players. Mark Richt went to see him thenext day, Bowden presented to him the salvation planand Richt accepted Christ.

In Bowden’s book, The Bowden Way, there is a copy of Bowden’s “Thirty-Five Rules.” According to Bowden, these rules have guided his actions sincehe first became a Division I head coach in 1970. He lists these rules in theconclusion of this book, which he describes as “heavily peppered with myreligious convictions, for which I offerno apology”. These rules, as sampledbelow, gives the reader a glimpse ofBobby Bowden’s beliefs and convictions:

• Fear no man. Fear only God.• Never allow success to make youlax or undisciplined.

• Trust in the Lord with all yourheart . . . and He will direct yourpath. Proverbs 3:5-6

• You do not have because you donot ask. James 4:2

• Depend upon the Lord and He will grant your heart’s desire.Psalms 37:4

• Christ calls us to be servants, not masters.• Why worry. . . when you can pray?• We ask for favors. God gives us opportunities.• Christ as tough-minded but tender-hearted. –William James• If you were being tried in court for being a Christian, wouldthere be enough evidence to convict you?

• Lord, help my words to be gracious and tender today, for tomor-row I may have to eat them.

Coach Bobby Bowden has seen so many lives changed because ofFellowship of Christian Athletes that he supports it and feels it’s the mostimportant group, second only to the Church.

We are blessed to have Coach Bowden speakhere on the Emerald Coast on January 10, 2014at an FCA banquet at Shalimar UnitedMethodist Church. Please contact MichelleCarmical at [email protected] (850) 217-0391 on ways you can help support FCAin our area.

Deidre Pujols, Wife of Los Angeles first baseman, Albert Pujols

"Jennifer has the ability to deliver a message of forgiveness, love and compassion with a non-stop passion for youthand young adults.God of the Gray Areas brings a message of Purity, Truth, and Justice."

Doug Holtzmann, Conference Director, Joyce Meyer Ministries, St. Louis, MO

“I have had the distinct pleasure of experiencing Jennifer Lopes’ book,“God of the Gray Areas,”through three different sets of lenses. As a typical reader, I ampleasantly struck by the genuine freshness of Jennifer’s perspective, and I am delighted by the personal relevance of each chapter. As an author, I am in awe ofthe deft combination of light touch and powerful impact without being “preachy” or obvious. And, as Jennifer’s publisher, I am grateful to be a part of bringingall the life-changing words of “God of the Gray Areas” into the hands and hearts of all who read it. This book carries my highest recommendation.”

Make Exercise a Part of Your 2014 Resolutions

Therefore I always exercise and discipline myself [mortifying my body, deadeningmy carnal affections, bodily appetites, and worldly desires, endeavoring in all

respects] to have a clear [unshaken, blameless] conscience, void of offense towardGod and toward men. Acts 24:16 [Amplified bible]

For the time being no discipline brings joy, but seems grievous and painful; butafterwards it yields a peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have beentrained by it [a harvest of fruit which consists in righteousness-in conformity to

God’s will in purpose, thought, and action, resulting in right living and right stand-ing with God]. Hebrews 12:11 [Amplified Bible]

DisciplineTraining that corrects, molds, or perfects; to train or develop by instruction andexercise especially in self control.

Exercise is a must for anyone that wants to be at the top of his or her game. There are myriad benefits of physical exercise. We need to do some aerobic exer-cise. The heart is the only muscle in our bodies that is strengthened by oxygen. We can’t lift a weight with our heart. The only way to increase oxygen to the

heart is to get it pumping through aerobic exercise. Now when we get the circu-lation flowing like that, everything feels and performs better because it is allbeing fed. Leviticus 17:11 says that the life of the flesh is in the blood. That isjust so true. The oxygen, the nutrients, and the helper cells are all in the blood. When you exercise you literally feed every cell of your body. You will noticechanges in your skin, your eyesight will improve, your mental clarity willimprove, you will sleep better than you have in years, your moods will improve, your bowels will be more regular, your cravings for unhealthy foods will abate, your immune system is boosted for twenty four hours after you exercise, andyour overall sense of well being will soar.

Besides aerobic benefit, whatever activity you have chosen will also strengthenyour skeletal muscle. You will improve your balance and your posture. You willavoid aches and pains that stem from a weak structural foundation.

Prior to exercising you should take time to stretch yourmuscles. This is so impor-tant to keep themuscles limber and to avoid injury during your exercise session.Stretching is something that you can do throughout the day also to get your circu-lationmoving.When you feel sluggish you don’t need a "sugar high" or some caf-feine, you just need to get the oxygen flowing, which will be invigorating.

Exercise should really be part of your daily lifestyle. Thirty minutes a day of onpurpose exercise will make a world of difference in your health and well being. It is ideal to do your exercise about the same time of day everyday, too. Avoidexercising to close to bedtime. Give yourself about three hours before lights out.Just the day when you really don’t feel like exercising is exactly the day when youneed to press on and do it! You will find that afterward you are rejuvenated andoh so glad that you pushed yourself to get moving. Not only that, but youaccomplished some great spiritual warfare because it was your enemy trying tothwart your healthy lifestyle plan.

So try a few things and find out what you enjoy doing. You can walk, run, dance, swim, bike, play tennis, or join a Zumba class. Just get moving! As a sidenote regarding cardiac health, are you aware that the bacteria in your mouth cancause cardiac disease? Please make it a lifestyle choice to brush, floss, and rinsewith a bacteria-killing mouthwash twice daily minimum.

HUMOR IN HOLY PLACES

Finding Humorin the New YearWith the new year comes chal-lenges, hopes, fears, and stress.Attitude will trump circum-stances every time. I encourageyou to resolve to maintain a pos-itive attitude for the new year –an attitude of looking for thebest in every day, an attitude ofhappiness, humor, and laughter.Every day we should search for areason to laugh. Some of myfavorite sources of humor arechildren, family, and churchfolks. I have friends who are for-ever posting or telling me aboutcrisis moments with their chil-dren and grands which they facewith a sense of humor.Following is one such instance:

A grandmother friend of mine found humor in an overheard conversation:

We passed the Methodist church with the big rock out front, and this isthe conversation we heard from the back seat:Sophie: Wow! What a big rock. Who made it?Rafe: God did.Sophie: With his God-tools??? (so precious)Rafe: No, He just spoke it. (so wise)

Laugh today; laugh tomorrow; and find humor every day in 2014. Overthe coming year I will include more of these humorous instances thatoccur everyday to make us laugh.

Think on the good things in life as Phil 4:8-9 instructs: Summing it allup, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating onthings true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things tocurse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard andsaw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. (The Message)

— Barbara Eubanks

Sophie is four-years-old and Rafe issix; parents- Jason and LoriBoatfield.

Start shopping. Now’s the time to start a new “occasions list” for all your2014 gift needs. Make a list of all the people you’ll be buying gifts for thisyear. Out beside their names, note things like birthday, sizes, etc. Then, anytime you’re out shopping, look for items that will fill these gift needsand note them on your list as you buy them. Store all gifts in a specificlocation (I have a designated gift closet) and label the bags with the recipi-ents’ names. I’ve heard from countless people who’ve told me they buybetter gifts and spend around 75 percent less by shopping ahead andcatching the best deals. Too, they spread the expense over the entire year, enabling them to stick with cash spending.

Plan & Cook AheadEasy corn chowder. You’ll need: (A) 6 slices of bacon; (B) 1 medium onion,chopped; (C) 3 medium potatoes, peeled & cubed; (D) ½ cup of water; (E) 2cups of milk; (F) 1 can (16-oz.) of cream style corn; (G) ½ tsp. of salt; (H) ½- 1 tsp. of black pepper; and (I) 1 tbsp. of margarine.

On a thick layer of paper towels and with one more as cover, microwavethe bacon until crispy. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, sauté the onionin margarine until tender – if you cook the bacon in a skillet, use 1 tbsp.of bacon drippings. Add the potatoes and water; cover and simmer for 15to 20 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the milk, corn, salt andpepper. Simmer until piping hot, stirring often. Crumble the bacon &sprinkle a little into each bowl as you dip up each serving. Optional: addgrated cheese and/or chopped green onion to each bowl.

Knock out your debts.Make 2014 your debt-free year. No, you probablycan’t pay off all your debts this year, but you can start making a dent inthe ones you already owe, and you can commit not to make any newdebts. Begin with your lowest balance credit card and start paying eachmonth as much as you possibly can toward this one debt. This way, instead of scattering extra payments to a number of creditors, you focuson one until it’s completely eliminated – you’ll love making that final pay-ment! As soon as that debt is paid in full, move to the next lowest balance. And keep it up. Each time you wipe out a debt, you’ll feel great and you’llbe ready to tackle the next one.

Closing thoughts. “Owe nothing to anyone – except for your obligationto love one another” (Romans 12:8a, NLT). Of all people on this planet, believers should be the ones who are the best money managers – after all,it’s God’s money, His blessings, that have been entrusted to us. Make acommitment to be the best possible manager of all He’s entrusted you in2014.

FINANCIAL STRAIGHT TALKWITH DAVE RAMSEY

Dear Dave,We’ve been supporting our son while he’s in college. Hejust finished his sophomore year, but he told us theother day he has dropped out of school and isn’t goingback. He’s been playing in a band on weekends, and hehas this vague idea of becoming amusician. We don’tthink this is a good idea, but we still want to be sup-portive ... just not too supportive. We want him to befinancially independent, as well. How should we handlethis? —Karen

Dear Karen,This kid is about to have some problems. Not onlyhas hemade a bad decision, but he should have con-sulted with you guys before he quit school. He owedyou that much if you were supporting him this wholetime.

Inmy opinion, you and your husband have one job

right now. That job is to stand back and let life hap-pen to this kid. If he thinks he’s a man, let him go outand prove it.Wish him the best and tell him youhope he becomes the rich and famous rock star hewants to be. But make sure he understands you’re notgoing to support him financially when he’s doingsomething you both feel is a bad idea. The FirstNational Bank of Mom andDad is officially closed!

Understand that I’m not suggesting you turn yourbacks on this guy. Let him know howmuch you bothlove him and that you’ll be praying for him. Invitehim over for dinner once in a while, stay in touch, andmake sure he knows that family deals likeThanksgiving and Christmas are still business asusual. However, as far as paying for his rent, utilities, gas, food and cell phone bill? That stuff ’s not hap-pening. This may sound tough, but it was his deci-sion. In the end, let him know you’ll be there to helpjust like before if he wises up and decides to finishschool. But until then? Little boy, you signed up forthis trip!

—Dave

Dear Dave,What do you think about using an online bank for myemergency fund? —Raphael

Dear Raphael,It’s not a bad idea at all, as long as you can easilycheck out the institution’s reputation and stability. There are lots of financial scams online, so you wantto do some research andmake sure they’re a rep-utable and trustworthy organization.

Due diligence is the key, Raphael. There are reliablehousehold names that are online banks, but you can’tjust assume the group you’re dealing with online ismade up of honest, stand-up folks anymore thanyou can with a traditional brick-and-mortar bank.Make sure you take your time and know exactly whatyou’re getting into before going into business withthem.

Remember, it’s not as simple with an online bank asjust walking in the door to get yourmoney back ifsomething goes wrong!

BIBLE TRUTHGod sees all sin, in all places, at all times.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYSNothing in all creation is hidden from God’ssight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare beforethe eyes of him to whom we must give account.Hebrews 4:13, New International Version (NIV)

Toilet Paper X-Ray Tube

INGREDIENTSToilet Paper Tube

INSTRUCTIONSSTEP 1: Using your right hand, hold the toilet paper tube against yourright eye, so you can see through the tube.STEP 2: Keep both eyes open and focus on any object in the room.STEP 3: Hold your left hand in front of your face, with your palm facingyour left eye. Place the edge of your left hand, the pinkie-finger side, so it istouching near the end of the toilet paper tube and observe.

EXPLANATIONAs you peek through the toilet paper tube, a hole appears in your lefthand. This is an optical illusion caused by your brain taking what your

right eye observes, and what your left eyeobserves, and putting the images together tocreate a picture. This confuses your brain andcreates a picture with a hole in your hand.

BIBLE CONNECTIONWhile the hole in your hand was an illusioncreated because your brain was confused, noillusion created by man or woman can hide sinfrom God.

Time Moves Quickly—How Will You UseYours in 2014?A new year has arrived—2014. Howwill you use the hours and minutesgiven to you in the months ahead?Sometimes we think we have “all thetime in the world” so we put things off;we procrastinate. Sometimes we don’tever accomplish what we had intended.

Let’s think about time. It’s a short word, but it has a variety of meanings. Time could indicate your list of NewYear’s resolutions, and when you plan to complete each item on your list.Time could be what you desire to put into your job or schoolwork duringthe New Year. Time could be how much you want to invest in othersaround you—those in need, those you want to build a new relationshipwith; those close members of your family; those who you call your goodfriends. Time means different things to different people. You have to decidewhat is most important to you and how your time can best be utilized.

Did you ever stop to think about how much time makes up a year? At 365days with 24 hours a day, just multiply, and you get 8,760 hours. Of course, part of this time will be used for sleeping, but there’s still a lot of time toutilize. Make it count, use it wisely, plan to spend part of your time helping

others. Organize so that part of yourtime is used to accomplish things thatare really important to you. This willbring about a good feeling of self-worth, raise your self esteem, makeothers proud of you, and when your8,760 hours of 2014 come to an end, you’ll look back and feel a sense ofaccomplishment.

So get busy thinking and planningand jump into 2014 with enthusiasmand excitement. Some of the hours

are already gone, so make all those left really count! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Prayer: Dear God, Help us make the most of 2014. Lead, guide and direct us in all that we do and help us bepleasing in your sight in the way we use our time.
