Coaching is what happens when two people focus on creating change.
•A relationship between 2 people to bring about ---
“intentional change.” •Collaborative / Solution Focused / Results Orientated / Systematic / Results are measured and refined •Enhances Personal Growth / Goal Attainment / Performance Improvement
Kieren Perkins & coach John Carew - an 18 year partnership. "Everything I achieved I owe to Mr Carew,” he said “he not only made me the swimmer I was but also the man I am today.”
Great Aussie Sporting Write-off
Going into Atlanta Olympics 1996 Kieren
Perkins •Failed 400m qualifications •Slowest qualifier for the final 1500 metres • Only in finals by 2 strokes •Written off by critics •Sick, injured, wracked by loss of confidence, hit the panic button, he had an ‘emotional moment’
•In the lead after 75m and never lost it. •Won by 15 metres under the 15 minute mark. •Commentators (bless ‘em) started the race with ‘he’s been out of form’ to ‘Perkins is pulling away’ to ‘Kowolski is closing’ to ‘Perkins is increasing his lead’ to ‘this is blowing me away’ to ‘I wasn’t a knocker, but I was a doubter’ and admiringly ‘Is his chest big enough for his heart?’ • And finally: ‘DON’T DISCARD A CHAMPION’ •How did Perkins achieve this turnabout?
Understand the difference between GOOD and EXCEPTIONAL performance = MINDSET
•Drivers / Motivation •Strength of Character •Self belief •Resilience To paraphrase Perkins: ‘I had a fairly simple CHOICE – to give into the fear and doubt or do my best regardless of where I came. I was not going to mess this up.’
Daniel Kowolski, Kieren Perkins, Graeme Smith
Choice
How many times today did you choose: • performance enhancing behaviours and attitudes? •What were they? •performance sabotaging behaviours and attitudes? •What were they?
“There is always an inner game being played in your mind no matter what outer game you are playing. How aware you are of this game can make the difference between success and failure in the outer game.” Gallwey T. 1974
Performance = Potential – Interference
Coaching for Performance
• Good coaching removes this interference
• Helps develop new habits commensurate with desired outcomes
• It provokes and challenges new ways of thinking.
• It measures outcomes
• It requires accountability
• Develops mental toughness
Sir John Whitmore innovative thinker, leader and pioneer of coaching.
“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”
Whitmore, Sir John 1992
