Clothbound Hardcover SpecsThis is a clothbound hardcover book. The type is foil stamped onto the chosen material (fabric or imitation leather). It is glued and wrapped around a hardcover board. The endsheet is glued to the wrapped board. There are two methods for the foil stamping:

Method 1: Ludlow type (See type choices starting on page 3 >)

The least expensive method. Our hardcover bindery has a very old machine for casting type from matrices set by hand, called a Ludlow machine. The machine has a set number of typefaces and sizes to choose from. The next seven pages show the available typefaces and ACTUAL type sizes.

To Spec the type, we will need a PDF file with the front cover and spine measured out, and the Title, Subtitle and Author’s Name in black type at the approximate size. You don’t have to have the exact typeface listed, but it helps to have a similar one. Label each with the typestyle and type size. For best

Your die mockup can be created in InDesign, Illustrator, or any other program that keeps the type in a vector format. Saved file as an eps or pdf to maintain vectors for best clarity when making the die.

A metal die is made from the file you provide.

The metal die is used to stamp the cover.

Method 2: Metal Die The more expensive option is to have a custom metal die made. It costs extra to make the die (price is per square inch), but it gives you the opportunity to use graphics and your own typefaces in the design. Call us for pricing and information.

Note: Very fine lines and textures cannot be reproduced well. The metal piece will be stamped very hard against the material, and fine detail is difficult to adhere to the textured material.
