Biometrics



Types of Physiological BiometricsHAND• Fingerprints

– Looks at unique ridges on the fingers

• Finger and Hand Veins– Analyses the

patterns of blood vessels visible from the surface of the skin.

• Hand Geometry– Measurement of

hand characteristics like the length and width of fingers

EYES• Iris Recognition

– Measures the unique folds of the thread-like muscles

• Retina Scan– Captures

capillaries deep within the eye

FACE• Facial Recognition

– Measures the geometry of the face

EARS• Ear Shape

– Measures the ear’s acoustics using special headphones and inaudible sound waves

– Looks at what a person’s voice sounds like, as well as how they speak

DUT Exam Access PoC• Aim of the PoC

– Adapt IT in collaboration with Raphta and DUT looked to enhance DUT’s exam attendance process.

– The following is what the PoC wanted to achieve:• Identify the students that were entering the venue by

running their faces against the student card photo in the ITS Integrator database

• Verify the students that had been successfully identified against the exam schedule

• Write the attendance data back to ITS Integrator for reporting purposes

DUT Exam Access PoC• Success Criteria

– Match or better the time it took for an invigilator to verify a student upon entrance to the exam venue.• Only 1 exam venue was selected for the PoC.• The PoC was run for the duration of the supplementary

exams in December 2019.

– Raphta’s Shuri facial recognition– Adapt IT’s exam attendance app– ITS Integrator– Jasper

DUT Exam Access PoC• Inhibitors

– The existing student images from DUT were of very poor quality• To counter this, the team decided to sample students

who were going to be writing an more than one exam in the venue. These students were onboarded with better student images at the venue.

– Load shedding caused the cameras to loose power as well as cause network drops

– Must have high quality student images– Must have UPS on cameras and network– Must have better placement of cameras

Biometrics Development update• Phase 1: Exam Access

– Exam scanning app is based on development that NUST let Adapt IT use as part of the NUST – Adapt IT Partnership

• Phase 2: Class Attendance– Still in development

• Phase 3: Campus Access– On roadmap

• Focus is currently on Fingerprint biometrics and Facial Recognition
